A lot of my own opinions on various movies and other things, have been shaped by being challenged by others.
I write something, someone responds, and BAM, that actually makes sense, didn't think of that.

Where would I be if, instead of listening to objections, I'd get uptight and annoyed at how someone dares question my OPINION?
Probably getting offended at negative remarks about a religion I admittingly have no clue about.

You know, part of putting an opinion on a public forum, is that it very easily may be challenged by somebody. Part of having one is that it may be deluded in some way. It doesn't mean anyone is super-smart, or megalomaniacal - it's just normal discourse happening.

So you may as well quit your worthless one-liners, it's getting aggravating.

The rest probably 2, 1, 2.

So in other words, you don't like this movie, but this person over here does.  Here's his reasons.  No sorry, your reasons aren't good enough.  Your reasons are flawed.  Here's why you shouldn't like the movie.  Why would anyone want to convince someone not to like a movie.

And I rather find his worthless one liners amusing.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to not like a movie, but yes, the reasons are flawed. They often are.

So what's your problem?

Star Wars: 10/10

The Empire Strikes Back: 10/10

Return of the Jedi: 7/10

Phantom Menace: 5/10  (L8wrtr's edit: 6/10)

Attack of the Clones: 4/10  (JasonN's edit: 5/10)

Revenge of the Sith: 3/10  (Stankpac's edit: 5/10)

Had to throw those edit scores in as I haven't watched the original prequels for ages. Still a few to check out but those are my favourite edits so far. If it wasn't for the fan edits I would probably never watch the prequels again.

I tried the 8 ball system p-rule but I couldn't do it. Even though 3 is about the lowest score I ever give :P

On a 1 to 8 scale:

SW: 8 when I was a kid, 7 now.

ESB 7 when I was a kid, 8 now.

ROTJ: 8 when I was a kid, 6 now (still very good to me)

TPM: 3

AOTC: 1

ROTS: 4 (only because at least the story progresses in this one)

ANH - 7    SE version - 5

ESB - 8     SE version - 6

ROTJ - 6    SE Version - 4

TPM - 1

AOTC - 2

ROTS - 1 (maybe a 1.5)

Finally!  Someone with some sense!  Welcome to the foums, Adywan.  You should make some fan edits.  I'm not sure if anyone else would like them... but I'm guessing I would!

(never understood why a few seconds of force lightning should kill him).

Because the lightning caused his breathing apparatus to malfunction.

I have read that explanation several times and it makes sense, but I still think it should have been mentioned better in the movies or the damage by the emporer shoudl have been made more obvious. That's why I listed it as one of my main flaws of ROTJ.

No. This is stupid prequel logic: "We need to explain everything!"

I never questioned that the full powers of an evil, powerful, sorcerer could kill even Darth Vader.

People forget the impact of that scene at the time - the lightning came out of nowhere. You were not expecting it. Force lightning was badass...until ruined by AOTC.

Well, the prequels and explanations... they don't explain what the TF wants, they don't explain what Separatists want, they don't explain the Syfo-Dias nonsense or whatever... they're just really sloppy about providing exposition where it's needed.

In this case, I'd say the IMPACT made up for the lack of unambiguous technical explanation - we had the strong impression (at least from this movie, not ESB) that the Emperor had a strong mental power over Vader, holding his will captive and bound.
We can gladly leap to the conclusion that the Emperor's death (along maybe with the physical injuries inflicted) drained some life-force from him.

In fact, leaving it open, hanging in the air as a suggesting interpretation is even better - on one hand we don't get a silly line like "my life was bound to his, and now I die" (FUCK YOU, ROTK, FUCK YOU), on the other hand there's some magical, mythical quality to his death and redemption that may go beyond "Vader had to die because a few bits of lightning accidentally touched his helmet".

Yes. George's 1970s films were always structured to require minimal exposition. Show don't tell was his philosophy - one that was inline with his skill-set as a director.

Bingo. You just gave an insightful review of the prequels in one sentence!

It's probably not a good sign if you are saying "huh?" or "what?" to yourself while viewing a Star Wars movie. During the prequels we were saying these things constantly. When we were awake.

As a 12 year old, I clearly understood that the lightening damaged his life-support system beyond repair and that it was failing him.

Me to.

People complain that the PT explained too much, then I hear comments like this and wonder...

Do we really want this in ROTJ

  • LUKE: Why are you dying father?
  • VADER: The Emperor's lightning powers short circuited my breathing machine. Didn't you notice the kind of 'broken breathing machine' sounds I'm making?
  • LUKE: Not really. Anyway, do you want me to try and fix it? I'm handy with machines.
  • VADER: No. It's 20 years old. They don't even make parts for it anymore. Now, tell your sister... you were riiiiiiight... ...

That would be awful writing, all it would have needed was to change one line.

V: "Luke, help me take, this mask off."
L: "But you'll die.."
V: "Nothing can stop that now."

V: "Luke, help me take, this mask off."
L: "But you'll die.."
V: "Emporer broke that piece of shit anyway.

There fixed!

Well, I didn't get that his suit was damaged that much from the prior scenes.

The emporer was shooting precise strikes at Luke for several minutes. All Vader got were 10 seconds of unaimed, random lightning strikes. It should have been shown in a clearer way if this damaged his suit. (you know: "show don't tell" as someone mentioned in this thread)

Anyway I never got that when I was younger and so Vaders death didn't make any sense to me and it bothered me.

BTW Yodas death didn't make much sense either. I know all of you will tell me that he was sick and only waited for Luke to arrive so he can finally become one with the force, but seriously what are the odds? He already lived on dagobah for 20 years, suddenly gets sick between ESB and ROTJ, but then still lives long enough to have a last chat with luke?

So to me ROTJ has almost as many flaws, bad writing, annoying characters and silly scenes as TPM. I can understand if you don't see it that way, but to me TPM doesn't totally suck.

I guess the biggest difference to me between RotJ and the prequels is this:

RotJ is awesome except for where it sucks.

The Prequels suck except for where they're above average.

Now that I think about it how do Lightsabers stop the beam when they are activated? What we definitely need is for Lucass to film a 5 minutes monologue of Kenobi explaining the tech to us for the 3D edition of Star Wars.

"This was the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon...for a more civilized age. You see Luke, the power-cell emits an energy beam that is focused via either a natural or synthetic crystal..."

Much better. Then I can sleep at night. After I rub one out.
