Well, I really hope you guys don't hate it. I don't want to be responsible for you guys losing ten bucks. It may not be everyone's idea of the origin, but it works very well for me. They took time to set it up so that it can easily work with the original film, which goes a long way for credibility in my book.
Remember, this is very much a Batman Begins type origin story - a lot of groundwork is being laid for future stories. It's not a typical Planet Of The Apes film where the apes are sitting around discussing politics and science.
It's more of a cerebral story than an action story, which is what reminds me of Batman Begins - what traumatic events in a person's life make them who they are. For Bruce Wayne, it was the death of his parents. For Caesar it was something else.

A large portion of the film seems to parallel the true story of a chimpanzee named Nim. I didn't see anything in the credits mentioning it, nor have the director or writers referenced it in any interviews I've read, but it definitely has an element of Nim's life in it. I would be very surprised if the writers weren't aware of what happened to Nim and incorporated some of that into this film.

Holy shit is right, CA. I'm still trying to recover from that marathon of mindfuck* by watching stupid movies that require no real thought.
You could try it, but it's exhausting.
Don't try an overload of film noirs. Very bad idea. I've done it twice, once at a three day festival at an art house and a second time for the film society I ran in film school. You'll be thinking the worst of people and searching for ulterior motives for days afterwards.
Also don't watch a bunch of 60's/70's paranoia and conspiracy films too close together. The Parallax View is disturbing enough, but don't follow it with fare such as Night Moves, and John Frankenheimer films. You won't sleep easily.

Fortunately, I just moved to a magical place where movies only cost five bricks. A buddy and I went to see it earlier today and we both loved it.
Kind of funny you used the Batman Begins comparison, because I likened it to BB myself when my friend and I were discussing it after.
It was actually a really slow moving movie, but I never found myself bored for a second during it. I really thought the CG monkeys would bother me, but they really didn't. Some of the best CG animals I have ever seen.

I just thought the comparison of Stand By Me, which is definitely not a kids movie, to Sandlot, which is very, very much a kids movie, was kind of humorous.
I guess it is because of they both have an adult narrator recalling events from his childhood.
I really like Stand By Me, by the way; never cared for Sandlot at all though. To me it was just another kids sports movie.

I agree with 100% of these things, and that movie marathon sounds awesome (as long as you end with Mullholland Dr.)
I thought Black Swan was the best movie of the year last year, by the way.

Going to see it again with a different group this weekend.
Just like practically every showing I've read about, probably 10 out of 50 people walked out at some point in the first hour. A middle-aged guy behind me kept mumbling complaints to his wife every 10 seconds. I shushed him twice to no effect. Finally after a half hour of listening to him I turned around and said, "I can't listen to you talk the entire movie. Please be quiet or leave." They left.
After that, the remaining 40-some people sat in perfect silence. I feel like there should be a sign at the box office that says, "The Tree of Life is not a Michael Bay movie. If you can't appreciate the opera, the ballet, or a symphony, you probably won't appreciate this movie, so we recommend you see something else."

My theater was pretty empty to begin with, and everyone in it except my friends and I were over 60, so it was pretty calm. I could definitely see how people would react to it badly if they didn't know what to expect though.
My dad was like that in some ways, but he's an Italian immigrant and that's how he was raised. But, like Jack, I eventually came to terms with that. But what I mostly meant was all the experiences - we saw Jack learn how to love, hate, pity, feel shame, and overall develop his personality and world outlook. It's amazing to see it all happening on screen, exactly as it happens in life.
Another thing, the special effects in the 'universe scene' were mind-blowing, especially considering they didn't use CGI to do it.
My dad was kind of like that too. Not rough and cold to such a degree, but quick to anger and he believed in corporal punishment and would get angry just for strange things like making my sister laugh in the backseat when he was driving. Like you, I came to terms with it and I loved my father very much despite his unpredictable temper.
I've found that The Tree of Life dredges up memories in its audience in a way few films do. I think it has to do with Malick's style, his talent for bypassing the intellect and hitting you straight in the gut with some abstract emotion you weren't prepared for. It took me years to appreciate abstract expressionism as not an intellectual style but a viscerally emotional one, and I think Malick is perhaps the best of the best expressionistic filmmakers alive.
