Changes:

-Replaced the old laugh track with a more real sounding one
-Deleted Padme's "we live in the real world, come back to it"

So one of the last sequences I have to deal with is the Panaka/Obi conversation outside the ship on Tatooine.  I wasn't really satisfied with my first attempt, and I liked the concept of the "awkward silence" clip on youtube:

However, I think the execution is kind of lacking.  I tried doing it myself and playing around with it some, but I never liked how it turned out.  So I decided to go in an entirely new direction.

Personally I like the awkward silence version, but that works pretty good too. The only thing that makes me favour the Youtube cut is that it's more original--there's a lot of "name games" in the Ridiculous Menace, and the awkward silence was unexpected and novel. But it's hard to judge one way or the other, the thing with running gags is that they either get funnier each time they are used or they just become more repetitive and boring, but it's impossible to tell without seeing the full film. What seems repetitive when dished out in 30-second clips can be hilarious when integrated into a 2-hour+ cut, and vice versa.

Your points are all well taken - it is indeed my hope that having the gags spread out over the length of the edit will make it enjoyable.

I like the concept of the awkward silence version, but the execution bugs me.  The scene in TPM is one single continuous shot so there's no good footage to work with.  The editor used a cropped shot of Panaka, which isn't too bad, but I hate the Obi shot.  He doesn't even look the same for some reason (maybe the scenes were shot a long time apart?), there's no sand blowing, etc.  Also the slow motion used to extend the reactions was really obvious.

I'm well aware that you can make the same kind of complaints about many of my clips, but they don't bug me so too bad.  :p

Oh yes he was in that crap story with the Daleks, the pig men and the awful New York accents.

As fine as that line inclusion is it would be an ideal opportunity to show an incongruity (Robbie the Robot, a Dalek, A Cylon, Dot Matrix etc).

Why?  How would those be an incongruity?

He says "whatever universe you are from", I was merely suggesting putting a character or characters from outside the Star Wars 'universe' into the following shot.

But yes in this edit can you have incongruities?

Oh ok, I thought you were talking about the "I care" part.

You could have R2 say "I care" and then have a shots of other famous robots sharing the sentiment.

Robots that were introduced to cash in on Star Wars would be the best.

Twikki, Muffet, K-9 etc.

How about have him call back and after the same "No" you introduce the uncomfortable silence? Sorta the best of both? 

Ooh, that's not bad.  My problem was in creating a reasonable looking awkward silence between Panaka and Obi, but I'll bet I can do it with QG and the shot of both Obi and Panaka.
