I've read (an English interpretation) of the Koran, lived in an Islamic country, visited other Islamic countries, and opted to write a series of very long research papers on the subject of Islam when I was in university. None of these experiences has ever led me to change my opinions on the religion. It is very backwards and responsible for many of the problems we see in the middle-east. I guess it is nice to hold hands and get all lovey dovey about all religions being good and equal, but that is a bit like putting blinders on and looking the other way. Some things simply shouldn't be ignored, but for the last several years there seems to have been a desperate desire to ignore this one.

just what things have we ignored?

and you are going to complain about me making assumptions about Conservatives?

may I remind you that not all Muslims approve of the likes of Bin Laden?   Not all Muslims are terrorists.

How bout you take a tardis, go back to the 70's and tell Muhammad Ali to his face, that his religion is ridiculous and stupid.

I am not making assumptions, Warb. As I said, I've lived in an Islamic country, I have very close friends who are Muslims, I've read through the whole Koran (through translation, which most Muslims will tell you doesn't count as the real thing), and I've done a lot of research on the topic. My opinions of Islam are based on all these things. I am not assuming anything.

As for the Tardis comment, why do you always do that? If I disagree with Conservatives, you always tell me to take it up with Ferris. On other issues often tell me "You should tell that to someone who..."

I am not a time lord and there is no such thing as a Tardis, or time travel at all. Furthermore, I think pedophilia is horrific and disgusting; if there was a pedophile with the same physique as Muhammad Ali standing before me... well... call me a coward if you like, but I am not going to tell him to his face that what he does is "horrific and disgusting", even though it certainly, beyond any refutation, is.

In the interest of keeping my friends and being polite, I don't tell it to my Muslim friends either. At least not so bluntly. We've all talked and debated enough that they know how I feel, and I know how they feel about my beliefs (and even more spine tingling pleasant, about my culture and nationality in general).

Kind of interesting you jumped right to terrorism, Warb. I never said anything about terrorism, nor did I even think it. There are plenty of other grievances Islam is responsible for.

Heh, seems like the self-contradictions are melting Frink's brain down... does he really think he can fool anyone by repeating a false statement ad nauseum, other than himself?

I said it's awesome because it's well articulated, and backed up.
I wouldn't say this about a "yo, you know how tings are in Saudi Aravia, those are all crackpots man", even though I'd agree with its core message.

EDIT:
You know bloody well that I've never called you a dunce simply for "disagreeing", so quit pretending otherwise.

But that is the thing, I didn't really provide any examples of Islam being the things I claimed it to be (I could, I just didn't want to get into it), and without them my argument is pretty weak and baseless, but since you agreed with it you filled in the blanks and decided it was a pretty good argument.

Probably a college freshman, if I had to guess.

Your guess is correct!

Trust me, wasn't much of a guess. Your posts reek of college freshmen.

When I was in college there were shitloads of awesome things to do (aside from studying), there was alcohol, pretty girls of low moral fiber, fraternities, and all sorts of opportunities for the fun kind of trouble.

Not sure when the semester starts in Germany, but when it does you damn well better be out there living it up rather than wasting your time in bullshit fights on a stupid sci-fi forum. ;)

It was a pretty well-articulated post about something I already knew to be true from other sources, so I commended it.
Also expressing due respect for the whole "writing research papers" thing, even though I don't know the quality of those papers, and ultimately have to take your word for it.

Having that said, half of my motivation for calling your posts "awesome" was obviously purely diplomatic :P
It was an okay post. It was good. It's okay. It's good.

Oh, oh oh oh, wait, no... now for once you get to complain about my language problems!
I'd thought "freshman" meant "in the beginning years" or something like that.

Nah, I've studied music for two years now (semester just ended last week) - leaving now to catch up on my Abitur (which I've previously dropped out of, because I wanted to study music... it's complicated).

Now obviously none of that in any way reflects on my posting style (I'm gonna discuss star wars and pissing contests the same way whether I'm winning piano competitions or struggling as a car salesman's bitch), so you might as well let go of the stereotyping :D

(Liked going to town and partying a few years ago, back in school... nowadays, not so much.)

It isn't really stereotyping. Your general attitude just strikes me as someone in their first year or two of college. Doesn't sound like I was too far from the truth. Wasn't meant as anything negative.

Enjoy it while you can. I miss those days.

I already don't ;)

Your general attitude just strikes me as someone in their first year or two of college.

Or does it?
You should consider that (as I've often stated), I behave completely differently in real life, when dealing with peers, or elders, than on internet boards (where I, save for rare exceptions, don't think about making friends, and just come to say what I think).

Saying "your argument is stupid" to an anonymous face on the internet, who has anonymity and lack of personal contact to shield THEM from emotional injury as well, when you've come to exchange ideas and say what you think, is simply different from interacting with actual people you have some relationship with, and care about in many more ways than just what they happen to say about something, and how.
(Probably with the exception of some family members, with whom I tend to argue about stuff rather often, and none of it affects the relationship in any way.)

[I realize that certain real-life scenarios, like public debates, have more in common with internet boards in terms of "the opinion mattering more than the person", while certain kinds of boards, like self-help communities, are more like careful real-life situations - but those aren't milieus I happen to deal in.]

So the real irony is, while you're claiming to "recognize" my attitude and behavior from your RL experiences with college freshmen, you probably wouldn't recognize me as one if you met me in real life ;)
Especially drunk.

From my side of the fence, when I'm looking at the HAIR-RAISING stupidity (inability to make a case while insisting that I'm the stupid one), immaturity (intruding with a "oh he's always right you know" in some other topic; not admitting your mistakes) and dishonesty (you know what I'm talking about, so don't bloody pretend you don't :P) in your posts whenever we lock horns over something stupid, I wouldn't think you're some educated guy capable of writing well-argued research papers, either.

As Pat Condell said about Pascal, "he was a very smart man; but he might as well have been an idiot". (Or an ACTUAL college freshman who meets all the clichés.) Someone should make a giant statue of this quote, and launch it into space for all to see.

Now, no one's gonna contest the unquestionable priority of stupid internet arguments about nothing over scientific papers here, but the point being, you obviously like to keep two sets of books, as well ;)

one could say there are ridiculous things in the Bible too.   If one lived with Westboro Baptists or watched  the 700 club, and listened to some of the arguments as to whether or not the KJV is one true word of God, one might draw the conclusion that Christianity is stupid and ridiculous.    I'm curious what Islamic country were you living in?    Just because that one country did some dumb stuff, is no reason to indict every single Muslim in the world.

Always remember, you have to be making sense on the... internet...

That's a pretty high ideal.

...Especially considering you haven't met that 'ideal' yourself.

It's pretty much a requirement if you want to argue about a particular subject without being totally lame, be it some external topic, or calling someone else an idiot. ESPECIALLY if you're gonna call someone else an idiot.

Things must, must, always be backed up :D

I may be wrong on occasion (like once very recently), but I always make the effort to substantiate my claims and insults, which I can't claim of some others here.
Because just saying "no, you're dumb" doesn't make it so, it makes you look like a doofus - and apparently some people on this board don't really grasp that yet.

"Making sense" is determined by the arguments. No arguments, no sense :D

How does any of this apply to what I said?

I wasn't arguing any point.

I never called you an 'idiot'.

I never said '...you're dumb'.

And, you cut off my third line, which was the punchline of my post.

You, sir, make no sense!
