Did you not see the prequel film made later that explains all of the backstory.
I know its a lazy thing to do kind of like a Lucas thing, but hey its Hollywood's mainstay now stupid prequels.
You know like we really needed a movie that showed how the enterprise was built and how Kirk met Spock aka star trek,lol.
