Japanese LD is more like (or maybe it's exactly the same as) the International Cut, which differs from the US Cut.  It has the love making fireplace scene and the longer Sheila ripped blouse scene.  At the end, it also has the US ending tacked on after the credits.  It also has longer windmill and Ash spider walk scenes.  It's P&S and has hard subtitles.  This was the longest version available for a long time.  Eventually, Anchor Bay released a Director's Cut, that has similar but slightly shortened scenes that I mentioned above.

The US ending is the supermarket one, while the apocalypse ending is the original one.

Everest checked, if the jp. DVD contains the same Version As the LD, just Widescreen and without forced subs? The jp DVD is about 15 seconds longer than the US Directors Cut, and it contains the Other Ending As Special Feature, afaik. I just Know it is longer and contains the longer Sheila ripped blouse Scene. But about 15 seconds Sounds if Somerset more scenes are longer. I own too much different Discs and Versions of that Movie to Know what Version is what... :) There Even was a German DVD with the alternder beginning, the Henry the Red with ash Scene, and the windmill Scene where sah leaves the windmill just bevor he ran into it again and smashes the Mirror. But afaik this is just a bootleg DVD After a licensed VHS Tape, but eventually the bootleg was officially rereleased by the German rightholders.. But informations are rare about that Version...

I wonder if that German bootleg is made from Anchor Bay's deleted scenes as they were part of the bonus material.  The Sci-Fi version is even longer than the Japanese version, so if you checkout the fan cut called The Primitive Screwhead Edition, it merges Sci-Fi cut w/ the MGM Hong Kong release (best looking version) and the Director's Cut.

Is this the Jei Wea laserdisc; if so, I believe that this is the director's cut not the International Cut. It is sourced from a print of Sam Raimi's original director's cut that he submitted to the studios, even having reel change markers still. Also, it is not pan-and-scan but rather open matte, making it have the most picture of any Director's Cut. It does have the original ending like the director's cut. The print used was bit pink faded if I remember correctly and had burnt in subtitles. It also has the Sheila ripping sequence which was censored in the US DVD.

The German bootleg sounds like a quick and dirty edit, inserting all the deleted scenes, much like the Primitive Screwhead that Lacerated mentioned.

I don't know which LD I have, yet. In some weeks I will know more.

On DVD I own some Versions of the Movie:

- german first press DVD (without engl. audio) ~85 min PAL; US Shopping Center ending, some scenes longer than US Theatrical Cut

- german MGM DVD (german Theatrical Edition; ~85 min PAL)

- german "Director's Cut" DVD (Based on a Theatrical Edition, DC scenes are inserted very poor quality)

- US official Bootleg DVD (DC)

- US Boomstick Edition (TheatricalCut and DC)

- JP MGM DVD (longer DC .. at least with the longer blouse rip)

Its really bad, that such versions like the scifi version never see light on DVD..

Jei Wei LD is not the Japanese LD.  That's a bootleg from Singapore according to Video Watchdog.

Got it. Sorry about that. I guess you're talking about the Captain Supermarket then; however, according to lddb, it's open matte. Lacerated, you said that it was somewhat like the International Cut; is this the Australian and Japanese Special Edition described on imdb? It seems to fit your description.

Didn't know that the Jei Wei was unofficial/a bootleg laserdisc; in any case you can find more info on it here.

There was a German VHS that had both endings, with the US ending just being just a dream before Ash woke up into that post-apocalyptic time. It also had the deleted scenes... Thinking about it, is that German bootleg DVD you mentioned a transfer of this or is it a separate quick and dirty edit, as I speculated earlier?

Also, if anyone still is curious, here are all the differences between the main Army of Darkness cuts.

By the way, since thread is becoming mostly about Army of Darkness, which is fine by me, I'm changing its title yet again.

I am sure my LD is Not the Taiwan Bootleg. So I assume, that it is the normal japanese LD, containing the international Cut. So I am just missing the german VHS Version and the scifi Version. But according to the Different Version Cut List in the SciFi Version. The German bootleg is, if avaible, quite expensive... About 100 €... And the official rerelease is not avaible at all, at the moment. At least it seems Army of Darkness is Not the Movie with the Most different Editions I bought... Just 1 LD, 2 BD, 6 DVDs.... ... But its a matter of quality: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php?vergleichID=40 ( Different DVD Versions). And: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/index.php?vergleich=army_of_darkness ( BD vs DVD ) Sorry for Not using textblocks. I am typing on my iPad, and it does Not support New Text Input, so i have to use Simple Text edit, without formatting automatically...

Yes, the Japanese LD I'm referring is Captain Supermarket.

According to a Video Watchdog article, Jei Wei LD comes from Singapore, not Taiwan, but I don't have any verification on the country of origin.

Don't know what they did on the German Bootleg DVD. The infos are quite rare.

I read on the Idea that the supermarket ending as a dream into the other ending. But never saw it.

I think my jap. LD contains the Cpt. Supermarket Version... and this seems to b.

Had no time to watch it, yet, the weekend was filled with Folkrock Music at a local festival...

Just got some pics of the packaging:

That's definitely the Captain Supermarket version. According to lddb and imdb, t has both endings, as well as the censored shot of ripping Shiela's dress.

I checked the Laserdisc today. I totally need the possibility to capture this to DVD or so. Even with the subtitles in the screen the FullScreen just rocks. But with my LD player and Usb capture Stick I would loose too much quality in capture process. :( But one thing for sure: I will not throw this disc out of my movie collection. Even if the few LDs I own are just a nice sidekick...

I take it that the picture is open matte then. Is it confirmed that the only differences from the theatrical cut are the Sheila dress-ripping scene and a bonus of the alternate end?

On that topic, does anyone know whether or not the Full Screen version on the Anchor Bay DVDs was open matte or cropped?

The 4:3 Version of the theatrical Version on ABs DVD seem to be open matted. But if the cut is definitely different from Japanese LD. The DVD has the "london bridges falling down" scene, the LD not. The LD has the line "I ain't that good." After good ash blasted bad ash. The DVD has the line "Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun."

Ah interesting. I'd always assumed the Captain Supermarket was simply the US cut with the Original Ending tacked on.  Does it have any of the Director's Cut Extra scenes or is it the International Cut?

I am not that good in comparing different cuts. But I always thought (and read somewhere) it was the international cut. The whole windmill scene is cutted as I know it from German television. But further details I would need more time and equipment to watch it simultaneously on LD and two DVDs, to get as much differences and similarities...

This website here seems to describe the Captain Supermarket cut. Apparently, it is a deviation of the International Cut... Though the Captain Supermarket cut is not specifically included, you can see the International, Director's, and TV Cut Differences on this page..

I suppose this disc may be worthy of preservation after all... It does have some unique features.

Yes, that's for sure. It is a NTSC, fullscreen representation. I only have a English languaged PAL widescreen and a German languaged PAL Fullscreen representation of the international cut on DVD. Not to mention the bad quality of the German fullscreen DVD. But as I mentioned before, before I dare to make a LaserDisc preservation, I have to buy better equipment... And need time on my hand.

I'm a little confused at the thread progression; Did those caps used in the Primative Screwhead fan-cut ever surface anywhere? I've been hoping SciFi would re-air it so I could DVR it, but this has yet to happen... or at least I kept missing it. :(

They never showed up online to my knowledge at least. I believe that the cap did make it's way through the DVD trade routes though. It'd still be lovely if someone properly uploaded it though...

Hey, it's been a while.  I still have an old membership over at myspleen, so I'm checking in their forum if it would be alright to upload this.  Definitely don't want the tv cut to fade into obscurity.  I actually tried uploading this to CG a while back, but they didn't want it.

Oh wow. Hello RidgeShark! It's good to see you back on the forums. Considering the great volume of TV cuts that have been recently uploaded to myspleen, I assume the AOD one would be absolutely fine. It's good you're planning to share this. Thanks, man!

Thank you, Aluminum.  Alright, so myspleen is finally back up, and now the Army of Darkness tv cut is available too.  Enjoy guys.
