What if, instead of this these troopers were near a small bonfire and it looked like a small battle had recently happened. There were bodies of Ewoks lying around and these troopers were throwing the carcases on the fire (a mirror to the jawas in ANH). Not only does this give the scouts something to do which would actually make the distracted, but also show how ruthless the Empire is to the indigenous population and why the Ewoks would be so ready to help them.
