Japanese LD is more like (or maybe it's exactly the same as) the International Cut, which differs from the US Cut. It has the love making fireplace scene and the longer Sheila ripped blouse scene. At the end, it also has the US ending tacked on after the credits. It also has longer windmill and Ash spider walk scenes. It's P&S and has hard subtitles. This was the longest version available for a long time. Eventually, Anchor Bay released a Director's Cut, that has similar but slightly shortened scenes that I mentioned above.
The US ending is the supermarket one, while the apocalypse ending is the original one.
Everest checked, if the jp. DVD contains the same Version As the LD, just Widescreen and without forced subs? The jp DVD is about 15 seconds longer than the US Directors Cut, and it contains the Other Ending As Special Feature, afaik. I just Know it is longer and contains the longer Sheila ripped blouse Scene. But about 15 seconds Sounds if Somerset more scenes are longer. I own too much different Discs and Versions of that Movie to Know what Version is what... :) There Even was a German DVD with the alternder beginning, the Henry the Red with ash Scene, and the windmill Scene where sah leaves the windmill just bevor he ran into it again and smashes the Mirror. But afaik this is just a bootleg DVD After a licensed VHS Tape, but eventually the bootleg was officially rereleased by the German rightholders.. But informations are rare about that Version...
