I really miss the read along records. "You will know it is time to turn the page when you hear R2D2 beep like this; 'dweet-doo-doo, dwee-dweet'. Let's begin now..."

I stumbled over those german read-along audio cassettes a few days ago...

Wow, I wonder what R2 sounds like in German?

Quite frankly, I would trust the judgement of the senior film crew from 1976; the cutting of these scenes were for the best.

I think that following the droids almost completely uninterrupted for the first 30 minutes or so was one of the most bold and unique decisions made in the film.

Certainly no argument from me regarding the 1977 film.  There isn't a single thing I'd change. Being introduced to the universe through the droids was very cerebral.  With no substantial dialogue for so long, we're left to take in the strangeness of this new world without having it explained**.  I thought it worked perfectly.

My point with the added scenes in the NPR version was that I feel like Luke is introduced appropriately.  Now that I know the story, the additional depth is welcomed. It's my go-to.  I like the deeper story.  A fan edit would be interesting alright, but not a must-have.  For a first timer - Star Wars77 should always be the introduction.

**That mystery and imagination-driven aspect was clearly a fluke for Lucas.  He quickly abandoned that style completely and went into uber-explanation mode.  I've said it before, I'll say it again - he's a very poor story teller.  He got lucky in 1977.

Anchorhead, have you seen THX 1138?  It's even more esoteric and exposition-less than the beginning of SW.  And it's been a long time since I saw American Graffiti but people praise that one as well (for different reasons, but still storytelling ones).

So I'm not sure it's accurate to say that Lucas is a poor storyteller, or that he over-explains things.  I think those might be accurate for some of his more recent films*, but it wasn't always that way.

*I actually like some bits of the prequels, however disappointed I am when they diverge from the cooler story that seemed to have been hinted/planned previously.

American Graffiti is a top ten film for me, so I agree it's a great story.  However, that wasn't originally the case.  From the articles I've read about it, it was in danger of not being released the way George had cut the thing.  It was a mess until Marcia got involved and re-edited it.  Same is true for several areas of Star Wars. My take has always been that George is a great idea man, but really struggles to flesh out a story.

THX-1138 I've never seen all the way through.  I've given it a look a few times, but never found it to be terribly interesting.

You really ought to give the original version a try. It has the seeds of everything George does with Star Wars.

Where were you in '77?

I might eventually.  It has been about twenty years since I gave it a look.

Maybe they'll put Lapti Nek and Yub Nub on the disk as deleted/alternate scenes.

What is that supposed to be?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

It's Luke's X-wing which the previous shot cuts to (he's walking to it-away from the Falcon in the storm). They started to fade in that flash effect to transition to the Blu-ray art for the end of the tag and in the transition the first frame or so of the next shot are visible.

Of course we would have to go through this frame by frame. ;)

I'm surprised at the quality being presented, but then again I'm surprised that we're seeing these at all.

It looks like the back of Luke's X-Wing, which would make sense for the lost sand storm footage.

It's a shame they didn't go with this footage.

Star Wars shouldn't always look the same and the obscured details here have an interesting quality to them.

It means George should change things every few years, keep it new and exciting.

Star Wars shouldn't always look the same ...

I'm curious what you mean by this?

It shouldn't always be bright and clear.

The snowstorms on Hoth obscured a lot from view which makes sense, the steam in the freezing chamber created exciting stylised shots.

The sand blowing around in this footage enhances the scene in the same way.

Just because you have a nice looking full scale model, it doesn't follow you have to show it at it's best.

Another example would be the Nostromo landed on Acheron.

It looks more realistic in a story sense because it's placed in a kinetic environment.

Oh, ok, I agree.  The gritty realism is one of the things I prefer about the OT over the PT.  Although I'd draw a line at -the acting shouldn't always be good-   :)

I didn't, I think Puggo is just making a general comment not related directly to my post.

Someone said that a long time ago, right?  That it was some kind of hallmark of the OT that was (rightfully?) upheld in the PT, or some rubbish.

It looks like they fixed the scene with Luke/Vader crossing sabers in front of the Emperor's face.  Luke cannot simply swipe of Palpatine's head, and he no longer appears to have those little slugs on the sides of his hood.

EDIT: Don't know why I tried to be first to make the point: already examined closely in BD thread.

At least you didn't make three threads about it.

From now on lets refer to it as the B3T:DE (Batman triple thread from darth ender).

Every saga should have an acronym ;-)
