Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 156

Does anyone here know anything about the ins and outs of Trades Description Acts? The Bluray advertising for this set clearly states, "own every moment". As the original versions of the original trilogy are not available, this advertising is clearly false...

Any grounds at all for legal action from any law-savvy Star Wars fans here?

I guess if the unaltered scenes are included separately it would technically include every moment but just not connected together.

It looks to me that they just increased the gamma for this shot:

Not just that shot, but the RotJ one too.

That cover art... It's just bad. So bad. That probably is the worst I've seen on BD yet.

I don't have a horse in the race, so it's not a concern.  That said;  It may be one of the worst home video covers I've ever seen - rivaled only by some of the previous LFL shit Photoshop jobs.  It is truly terrible - in concept and execution.

The drawing looks like something a Junior High kid would draw on his math notebook while day dreaming.  It's laughably bad. Even if it were the cover for the 1977 version properly released - no two ways about it - I would throw it in the trash and replace it with the original one-sheet.

Fucking terrible.

EDIT: I'm referring to the sunset screenshot:

Yeah but it looks better with the increased gamma and so would most of the lightsabres, so the question is will this be done to the actual video or is it just the picture. Maybe they'll take the 04 transfer but make some colour alterations?

Pink rather than Magenta.

I guess that's seven years of progress.

I see stars but I also see tangerine.

They really haven't a clue do they?

Yeah, when you do that and don't compensate for it with adding more contrast, blacks stop being black, which is especially bad in a transfer with horribly crushed blacks.

As for that TPM pic, it sure looks like a new transfer.

AotC - DVD vs Blu-Ray Preview:

The DVD capture is one frame off, but Yoda's head doesn't turn as much as it does in this Blu-Ray Preview.  Yoda's looking at Dooku now, doesn't quite get there in the DVD version.  So might be a new head.  *EDIT* or an extended shot, Dooku's cape isn't matching...  Looking at it a little more, the extended idea makes sense, there's no noticable music or dialog just sound effects and if you watch the cloak, the wrinkles sweep in and out.  Guessing an additional 4-6 frames, maybe more.

*EDIT*

this change and others? would explain why the FSK reclassified AotC according to reports: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-coming-to-Blu-Ray-UPDATE-May-4th-2011/post/514625/#TopicPost514625

These flaws with the OT transfer from 2004 don't bother me at all why it bothers some fans I don't get. at all. It won't stop me from buying the blu-ray box set if it is indeed the case that the flaws are not fixed. If some don't like it then don't buy the set. I had hold'ed out hope for the erorrs from 2004 to be fixed but if their not I can deal with that.

My spell check just exploded.

Regarding that error at the bottom of the frame in the master can that be corrected us the frame before or after it? So you guys can once again fix George's movies for him.

RotS - HDTV vs Blu-Ray Preview:  (sorry problems on the RotS DVD front... if someone can do it i'll revise the pics.)

I think all they got were complaints from most people about the OT being too dark. It is exceptionally dark on old CRT TVs and this was my first thought when first seeing the 04s this way.

Now it looks like they have only intensified the problem by increasing other levels!!!

Can we seriously get a hold of some of these people at LFL and Lowry and show them how wrong they are? Good grief, it's like they know nothing about proper treatment or !gasp! image composition and fidelity.

AOTS and ROTS looked like crap because of their 1080p native format. They're never going to look better. And now they've tinkered with the Prequels? (in TPM's case-again) Can it ever stop?

^ Doesn't every new format have new guidelines and limitations, there have to be changes for every subsequent release, just wish they'd explain what they've done to at least some technical journal.

Yes. Do companies producing media really care? No. As long as it fits on the disc, looks okay to them and fits the profit margin-it's out the door and on the shelves.

Yet with little fanfare plenty of movies manage to clean the scratches and get the color right so it's not a big deal until we have these weird guys and their personalities entering the mix. Gordon Willis says this (about the blu of All the President's Men:

it's all fucked up...all the medium tones [are wrong] and contrast is way higher than it oughta be....it's overloaded. They don't get it. They get on those fucking dials...it's a disease. Their idea for a Bluray is to make it for guys who are watching football.""And what are they gonna say?," he said. "We're sorry and we'll do it all over again? You call these guys, it's like talking to a head on a stick."

So basically all it takes for a hugely respected cinematographer to get hosed is one or 2 of those tech support guys who get a little taste of authority.

Hehe, I must say that although LFL using the old master is crap, finally having a proof of it feels like a total victory over all those saying that it will be a new transfer :-)
