The blu ray forum pic isn't showing up for me for whatever reason.

Thanks for the amazon link.  That sort of packaging is not going to hold up very well with kids want to watch the films often!

That's very true. The packaging is very collector orientated and the previous releases I mentioned are very much adult content. The kids can put the discs in empty cases or the garbage, whatever's preferable, I don't care.

Is that even going to be an issue this time?  ;-)

If my godson is anything to go by packaging and optical discs do not remain married that often when children are a factor.

The nightmare of seeing so many games and DVDs scratched to shreds (obviously purchased at some cost going by the price labels which were never removed) freely mingling with parts of long abandoned toys and abused books, covered in dust and crumbs and abandoned boxes has driven me to pledge never to buy him anything like that ever again.

The horror, the horror, the horror...

I just shuddered reading that.

Some close up screen shots of the Blu ray demo:

http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=30596

They're totally fake. They supposed to have been taken at the London preview on 14th July. Now for one the TV is fixed to the wall, whereas the TV at the preview was on a stand which was well away from any wall. Then there is the fact that no one at the preview were allowed to get close to the TV to take any pictures. They're Just pictures someone has taken while playing either the 2004 DVDs or the HDTV broadcast. And the text just seems to be a reworded copy from another site. here it is translated:

Thanks for correction and clarification-I fell for that hook, line and sinker!

There was a massive HD monitor set up over the top of a rebel briefing pedestal, much like the one tracking the movements of the Death Star in A New Hope. We were then treated to an abridged presentation of the Battle of Yavin in full 1080 resolution and I have to say it looked absolutely stunning. There were some Special Edition shots included and they seemed to match even more flawlessly than before in high definition. It was really something you just need to see to believe. It’s going to be a stunning looking set. In fact, I was able to handle the box and the concerns over the art, both inside and out, are pretty unfounded. It looks much more well designed and good looking in person than the screen captures could ever lead us to believe.

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

I agree, we shouldn't comment on the blu-rays quality until we've actually seen them ourselves but lets be honest, If you over look the changes and the messed up colours, the films are inevitably going to look good presented at 1080p. That's why everyone is saying they look stunning. A messed up HD transfer is going to look good when compared to a messed up SD transfer.

I retain a little hope that the colours will be sorted but why should we expect them to give us a decent quality transfer?

They messed up the 2006 DVD's, they messed up the 2004 DVD's, they messed up the 1993 Laserdiscs and they messed up the 1989 Widescreen Laserdisc.

Your brain just makes s**t up!

A fate worse than death? Having your head digitally replaced with that of Hayden Christensen!

a: I want that in my house.

b: You're right about speculation.

c: I really meant grammatically if something is already 'flawless' it has no flaws. It cannot become 'more flawless .' Sorry, it's the high school teacher in me. ;-)

bluray is crap format

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD/Bluray.

Blu-Ray deleted scenes:

Shame they couldn't have spent a bit of work and cleaned them up

Oh great, the always insightful JT34 is back. Looks like his senility has finally got worse because he is down to a few words sentence now. But why even bother posting on a site where you have blocked almost every member? Looks like he is upset with Blu-Rays because they are much smaller than his Laserdiscs and he has problems finding them with his old eyes. Idiot

I was all meh and then ORIGINAL WAMPA and then I was holy shit!

I'm still not going to buy this set, I don't need to, I just saw the coolest part.

Interesting how the edges of the frame resemble Puggo Grande in some scenes. Could some of this footage only exist as 16mm?

Awesome looking forward to seeing those cut scenes from the OT on blu-ray.  I did agree that the deleted scenes could have been cleaned up a bit more.

Yeah, sure.

The PT deleted scenes were all remasered and pimped up with special effects, soundeffects and music and the OT deleted scenes are treated like the bad step child. That's just f*cking great. With our luck they're also in SD.

You want bad CGI, new sound effects and music that doesn't belong to the scenes for the OT, too? I'm happy if they're going to leave them alone.

But there seems to a lot of dirt in there.

Stuff from the cutting room floor wasn't as highly regarded when the films were made like they are now. It's probably a miracle any of it has survived at all.

Things were different when the Prequels were made, as deleted scenes now had value as a DVD extra, so they were treated with more care. And in the case of Episodes II and III, they probably had dozens of copies of the digital tapes used.

The deleted scenes from a classic like Forbidden Planet only seem to survive as a VHS copy of a workprint. Criterion and later Warners haven't been too specific about the source of that, but it's safe bet a hard core fan rescued the footage originally, and the workprint no longer exists.
