Game of Thrones (HBO)

Anyone watching this? It took me a couple episodes to get into it, but now I'm hooked. I've watched every episode at least twice.

I love the opening credits. The music is EPIC (a word I rarely use unless it's true), and the concept of starting the show with a map that changes depending on the episode is a brilliant idea that really gives the series that fantasy novel feel. And the way it's all done like the inside of a hollow earth, with an astrolabe sun, and clockwork cities representing the turning wheels of political machinations, it's so effective.

I love the show, too.  I was hooked from the first episode.  I wish that all the exposition in episode 4 has been sprinkled throughout the first three so it didn't feel like such an info-dump, though.

I haven't read any of the books, though I think after this season is finished I'm going to read the first one.  I kind of want to watch the entire show fresh, without knowing what's going to happen, so I'm going to try to hold off on reading each book until it's been adapted on screen.

Same here. I don't want to know what's going to happen, or feel the urge to compare the series to the books. "This scene went differently; he didn't say that; she should be taller," etc. That sort of thing gets in the way sometimes.

I did notice something on the first rewatch though. I'm wondering how the "deserter" from the prologue got south of the Wall without going back through the tunnel to Castle Black. I can't imagine he climbed over a 700 ft. tall ice wall.

It came free for a year with Comcast's new plan to win back old customers. Got Starz and Encore free too. I would never pay almost $20 a month for HBO. Total ripoff.

I have not watched it yet, worried the adaptation will be as bad as the sword of truth series being transformed into another generic Sam Raimi show, with the title changed too.

As adaptations go they never get them right, even the best case scenario as in Peter Jackon's Lord of the Rings leaves a lot to be desired.

Is it as good as Krog Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire?

Is it better than Indy 4?

 Because there is no 'right.'

List any complaint you have with LOTR films, say any change you'd make, and some other fan will say "no that's totally against the spirit of the work!!"

Did you just tell skyjedi there is no 'right?'

Actually Since Tolkien is the author the author is where to look.

They got away with abominable changes because he sold the rights. But early on when they wanted to make films he was against any and all changes.

That is Why the film is Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and not Jrr Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

The films came out of the merchandising arm of Saul Zaentz company called Tolkien enterprises which has nothing to do with the Tolkien estate, if it did you could be rest assured Christopher Tolkien would have vetoed any and all changes to his fathers work.

I am glad Christopher Tolkien has the Silmarillion protected from Hollywood and the rest of Tolkiens writing, except for the finished manuscripts of the hobbit the lord of the rings and its appendices.  Zaentz has no rights to history of middle earth or the silmarillion, or the drafts of the hobbit and lord of the rings and other middle earth material.

The bare material hinted at in the appendices is not enough to make a second hobbit film, so jackson and co are making shit up that is not in any tolkien text.

If Tolkien had lived so long i think he would have kept authorial control, when he sold the rights for cash there was no chance of them being made into films as no studio back then would spend upwards of over 50 million dollars, nor was the material worth billions in term of a possible franchise.

The Tolkien estate was livid with the changes but more than happy to accept the royalties which they had to sue to collect and then have settled out of court.

RE the guy escaping through the Wall back to Winterfell in the pilot (before he's beheaded by Ned Stark):

It's mentioned in episode 4 (or 3?) that there are tunnels underneath the Wall that the Night's Watch use to get back and forth, as opposed to going over top.  In fact, in the prologue to episode 1, you can see the guy that gets beheaded and the other two walking through one of these tunnels.

Presumably there are no guards at the ends of these tunnels, so a member of the Night's Watch can go through them and desert without anyone knowing.

Though it seems like the horse riders did know that he deserted, so they probably saw him running away from atop the Wall.

This is all conjecture on my part, by the way.  Someone who's read the books might be able to provide more information.

And skyjedi, according the friends of mine who have read the books and seen the series (what's aired of it so far), Game of Thrones is far more faithful to the book than the LOTR films were to Tolkien's books.

Chainsaw, yes, if you look back on my post, you'll see that I am aware of the tunnel. There is only a single tunnel at each main fortress along the wall, and the tunnels are how the Brothers go to and from the haunted forest. In the opening shot of the series, you can see behind the three Brothers is Castle Black. In order to take that tunnel back, Will, the deserter, would have to go straight through Castle Black and past the Night's Watch. Not to mention, one of the other Brothers would've had to open the two gates for him. So I think we can rule out that he went through a tunnel. He must have known of a secret route over the Wall. That's the only possibility.

So, um, yeah.  Episode 6 was awesome, and episode 7 (which you can watch on HBO Go now instead of waiting until next Sunday) is even better.

...But now I have to wait two weeks for episode 8, so I'm thinking I might say fuck it and pick up the first book.  I probably won't catch up before the end of the season anyway, but man, I need something for the withdrawal...

Good to hear ChainsawAsh its too bad when they mess up a property like Sword of truth, but given the production values on HBO game of thrones must be spectacular.

This show is outstanding. The characters are interesting, the actors are great, and the production values are equivalent to a big-budget movie.

My favorite character is the imp. He's hard to pin down, so you don't know if he's a good guy in a bad spot, or just a sneaky bastard.

My wife likes the show so much that she started reading the books. So far she hasn't spoiled anything for me.

I just found out that there are only 10 episodes in this season. So I has a sad.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I've just started watching the Jason Momoa Bun Show, it's rather good but all that story and characters and stuff is getting in the way of the main focus of the piece.
