When Remakes are a Bad Idea — Page 8

BTW (I haven't read all 7 pages, so don't crucify me, if someone else stated this):
Star Trek (2009) isn't a remake. It's a sequel. It concludes all the TV-Shows with a timetravel leading into an alternate reality.
Hmm, sounds really poor. But it's a really good movie and the best Paramount could have done with the almost dead franchise.

It was OK, no better or worse than Nemesis which it closely resembles (which was in it itself a remake of TWOK) but nothing amazing, it has some nice scenes but it has some really awful ones too.

It's just a bog standard Star Trek film with the same narrative structure as ANH.

The platform leaping scenes really belonged in a Super Mario movie.

Please spend 7 pages doing it. I won't post a thing. We'll just read in awe.

And there goes the overly defensive sarcasm again.
Hey, you DID say, in all seriousness, that opinions CAN'T be debunked.

There's no purpose in acting all sarcastic about it, like "we'll be reading in awe, wink wink, like you had anything to tell us you pompous pervert", when actually, you had made such a crude mistake right before that.
Aside from making yourself look like an insecure douche.

Here's the thing, I'm NOT going to explain anything to you, because I'VE ALREADY DONE IT, and, well, here again for the slow:

And that after explaining this in perfect detail in a previous comment?
But hey, you know, reply to some other part of that comment, and then pretend to not have read the rest.

If you thought something I said there was wrong, you should be either posting a rebuttal, or leave this part of the topic.
Because if I've made my case, and all you do is just contradict (see Monty P) and/or act as if it weren't there and just insist on your position - that an opinion is something that is beyond rebuttal, or being wrong - then well, you fail and I have the highground, even if I was somehow wrong.

Why? Because even if I was wrong, you wouldn't know about it / can't tell where it's wrong / whether something's wrong.
And stubbornly arguing while not even being able to point out your opponent's mistake, now THAT'S just pathetic.

I won't post a thing.

So instead of backing up your accusation by examples, you're just gonna be cocky and sarcastic?
Got it.

Now you're gonna try to turn it around as if my "rudeness" was in question here, instead of "confusing your opinions with facts". So it doesn't seem like you're weaseling out of a challenge that you yourself created... in 3... 2... 1...

All of us who have criticized your rudeness

Well, at least three of them aren't as much wrong, as HYPOCRITICAL, as they've been occasionally more rude to me, than I have been to them (and also have started the conflict to begin with).
Having that said, and having the following said many times, as well, I don't give a crap if someone complains about my "rudeness" (bluntness and some sarcasm is more like it), unless I can see it was somehow uncalled for or inappropriate. And of course, there have to be examples, not just generalized complaints.

Right now, you're being pretty rude and dismissive. Well, dismissive. And cocky without substance.

and lacking coherence are certainly wrong about you.

So there you go, weaseling out of the "opinions" challenge, after having just made a crude mistake about "untouchable opinions", seamlessly jumping to rudeness, and from that to "coherence"... lecturing me on "coherence".

You know what, I'm not even

We're obviously the ones with problems.

Of which some I've just pointed out, described, and provided examples of.

Now I guess this piece of sarcastic brilliance should make me consider to "realize my own problems" based on your empty, chaotic quips.

You should see no reason to take a step back and reevaluate your words.

Well, you're pretty much giving me a reason to think that I have no problems, by REFUSING TO NAME ME SOME OF THOSE PROBLEMS AFTER I ASKED, and then acting overly sarcastic and making crude mistakes to cover up for it.

So if I've said a bunch of stupid bullshit somewhere, hey, I've tried, and if I'm now convinced about being correct about everything, it'd probably be your fault for not challenging me (or not even knowing where to challenge me).

When your opponent CAN'T EVEN PROVIDE A REBUTTAL WHEN ASKED, you know you're doing something right.
Or, well, actually no, you don't know that. Only that the other dude is failing so hard, I can't breath from all the hysterical laughter.

You undoubtedly face similar frustrations off the internet where few are as smart as you.

There are actually countless people "on the internet" that are way smarter than I'll ever be.
There sure are some folks here who know much more about movies than I probably ever will.

But not right here, right now.

As for off the internet, I don't remember getting involved in any debates outside my family on occasion.
I'd say I more often have the high ground on stupid philosophical fapping, while the others have the high ground on getting shit done.

But yea, been "pwned" on the internet often enough.

Where you tell it how it is but people can't handle the truth.

An obliviously accurate statement meant as sarcasm - instant unintented irony hilarity awesomecake.
Mm.

Like, because when someone's accusing me of confusing facts with opinions, and posts shitty flawed google graphics to support that, they're kinda misusing those terms... in the everyday language that is this board?

It's not a "google" graphic. Google didn't spawn the graphic. That very same graphic is in a 2nd grade reading text book. Do you suppose the publishers of this textbook found the graphic from google and put it in their book? Or do you suppose someone might have taken that graphic from a textbook and posted it online where it was found by a google search?

The definition of opinion which was covered by that graphic was "a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge" (from The Oxford English Dictionary, not some bullshit, iffy, dictionary website). It was a simple graphic meant to explain the basic differences between "fact" and "opinion" to grade school children. Just so there is no more confusion, the definition of fact being used in that graphic is "a thing that is indisputably the case" (also from The Oxford English Dictionary).

Examples:

(since the second grade method of teaching "fact" and "opinion" was a bit of a miss on you, let's try the method that seems to work with kindergarten or first grade)

*Pointing to a picture of a black puppy* I say, "The puppy is black"

Since the puppy is black, this is a fact. It is indisputable.

Now I say, "The puppy is cute"

While you or I may find the puppy to be very adorable, someone else may find it quite hideous. There is no real standard to define "cute", it can't be proven either way. Therefore this is an opinion.

No. Wrong.

You and Mrebo are SAYING that I'm confusing definitions.
I am SAYING that I'm doing a deconstructions.

I can explain it, and defend my position.
You're just tossing claims. Thinking that makes it real. :)

What I rather meant was that YOU had just randomly found it on google. But it was just a snarky jab, so thanks for informing me about the source.

I guess it kinda fits if I call this graphic INCOMPLETE, and then you add that it was for 2nd graders.
So how about you find an explanation for ADULTS, then update your knowledge from 2nd grade to adult level, and then we can talk.

Just so there is no more confusion, the definition of fact being used in that graphic is "a thing that is indisputably the case" (also from The Oxford English Dictionary).

Yea I know that already.
Thanks for repeating back.

Since the puppy is black, this is a fact. It is indisputable.

Now I say, "The puppy is cute"

While you or I may find the puppy to be very adorable, someone else may find it quite hideous. There is no real standard to define "cute", it can't be proven either way. Therefore this is an opinion.

Thanks for repeating what I've been saying for days. It's really adorable how you're really thinking you're telling me anything new with that.

The thing is, that is ONE meaning of opinion. A statement about a MENTAL STATE. That is LIMITED TO THE MIND. "Sunset is beautiful", in my older example.
It's equivalent to taste.

The OTHER meaning of opinion, is a judgment or view about a factual circumstance, that can't (or isn't) proven by the one saying it to be certain.

The sentiment that "a puppy is cute" can NEVER become a fact, because it's all in the head.

A judgement of a factual circumstance (like, what do I know, the state of a country and what could be done to salvage it) CAN become KNOWLEDGE of a factual circumstance (i.e. fact), if there is hard evidence making it a certainty.

That's how the word "opinion" (as well as the German "Meinung", and the Russian "mneniyeh"), are used in everyday conversation, in professional debates, on forums, and basically everywhere else; the dictionary I cited sums it up correctly.

So maybe telling a bunch of 2nd graders that at least two completely different notions are called an "opinion", can prove too difficult.
And from all it seems, explaining this to you is, too.

So again, when you're ready to talk on adult level, please come back.

What I've said here, I've already said at least 5 times on this sole thread, and at some point, it's ENOUGH.
Wanna be an adult? Start FUCKING PAYING ATTENTION.

Does the Oxford dictionary also say that "you" in English is both singular and plural?
It was RedFive btw, which I've said numerous times, aswell, but you're all in this together so why should I care?

Author

Actually, we're not all in this together. You make it sound like we are all good buddies siding with each other to gang up on you. I've had major disagreements, and even fights, with some of the other members that are on my side in this. You're just that awful that you've managed to bring everyone who cares to get involved in this against you.

There  have even been a few that stepped in willing to take your side, or at least the middle ground that we were both acting immaturely, but you wasted no time in convincing them they made a mistake.

You don't have everyone against you because we are some unbreakable team. You have everyone against you because you are just that much of an asshole.

You don't have everyone against you because we are some unbreakable team. You have everyone against you because you are just that much of an asshole.

The only instance I can remember where someone else pointed out someone else acting "immaturely", was Gaffer about Frink's "blah blah" in the Politics thread, which he since then deleted.

Having that said, yea, if Gaffer acts like a dick to me in that same post, that's how I'm gonna reply. If she thinks she made a mistake about being a dick, then good :D

You have everyone against you because you are just that much of an asshole.

Not as much as you, though.
I guess you still can't get ahold of the fact that you were the one who introduced the animosity here (both in, um, our "relationship", and generally, too), because you couldn't take a friggin' joke.

I didn't mean you were all in some kind of conspiracy, although there sure is a slight "bandwagon" thing going here.
I'm just talking about the whole opinion thing, and the way you all come at me crying how I "confuse facts with opinions", but then can neither keep up with a discussion of those terms, nor provide a SINGLE EXAMPLE FROM MY POST (now you're gonna ask again examples of what), you seriously might as well all be clones.

So yea, do you have anything to say on the opinion thing? I've just posted a response, yet I don't see you addressing any of that.
Are you gonna weasel out again?

If I had the time, I'd go through all your posts to get a count of how many times you've said this exact same thing over and over and over and over and over and over again. Aren't you getting tired of saying the same thing yet?

I didn't meant to introduce any "animosity". All I did was suggest that you misused the word "predecessor", turns out I was completely wrong, because yes, I didn't realize you were making a joke. From there you started being a major asshole so I asked "What the fuck is your problem", because I felt your reaction was uncalled for and we typically like to keep it civil around here. Expect that kind of reaction when you use fighting words.

If I were standing here with the vast majority of off topic regulars saying I am the one being the problem, I'd like to think I'd be smart enough to stop for a second to look at myself and reevaluate the situation.

Certainly more tired than you all of not getting / reading that same thing all over again.
Think about it, whose fault would it be that I'm repeating myself?

Now someone might say it's disputable... but then look at this:

If I had the time, I'd go through all your posts

QED, Bitch.

Here's the thing pal, if you "don't have the time" to read what I say, then DON'T REPLY TO IT.
It's like, you can't be bothered to put in the bit of effort (we're not discussing some kind of difficult academic issue here), but you still somehow want to squeeze in that I don't get something a 1st grader does, or do some stupid thing with your "opinions".

Because of the three alternatives,
1) having a sensible discussion, with the prospect of winning, or learning something new, or some mix inbetween,
2) bowing out and everyone forgetting about it in a few hours, and
3) staying on, but making oneself into a laughing stock,

which one would be the least desirable, to you?

From there you started being a major asshole so I asked "What the fuck is your problem", because I felt your reaction was uncalled for and we typically like to keep it civil around here.

Wow... wow. Hold on there for one second... are you seriously trying to tell me that... you still don't get that the "major asshole" (i.e. X-ray brain) part was... ALSO a joke??
Really, CP? Really? After all this time? After all these times?

Yea, your "what the fuck" "dumbshit" "least favorite member" was the first real douche post in here, and that's where you introduced the animosity. So glad we've finally got that cleared up.

Expect that kind of reaction when you use fighting words.

Like "dumbshit"?

If I were standing here with the vast majority of off topic regulars saying I am the one being the problem, I'd like to think I'd be smart enough to stop for a second to look at myself and reevaluate the situation.

What you fail to realize it that, I can reevaluate it, I do it in almost every new post, and it DOESN'T STAND UP TO SCRUTINY.
It simply doesn't. The evidence and indications for the preposterous suggestion that, despite fighting against a dozen of like-minded people, I seem to have the highground... is so overwhelming and shocking, with each new reply I'm reading from any of you guys, that I have no choice.

One example being THIS VERY POST.
You just denied introducing animosity into this debacle, blaming me instead... while the posting history clearly speaks against you.
You're still treating a joke comment (that was described by me as a joke about 10 friggin' times now) as a serious offense, or "fighting word", whatever.

Now you've, once again, weaseled out of an argument (it was your move to post an objection), claiming you "have no time", and in no time, you'll be back complaining about I confuse facts with opinions, or don't get the definitions.

Again, an argument is decided by WHICH PARTY CAN PUT UP THE ARGUMENTS. And then defend them against scrutiny and objection. And do it again.
NOT BY THE NUMBER OF FIGHTERS on each side. Quality over quantity.

I see the stupidity, I laugh at it, I describe it in painstaking detail, and in the next, or second next, response, it's done AGAIN. And I analyse it again. And then it happens AGAIN.

This is how you'd perceive yourself and environment on TFN, and that's how I feel here right now.
Thinking anything else would be cosmical insecurity on my part, and complete detachment from sense and reality.
