There actually is a good reason for this. Another type of banana is a Plantain, which is almost the same except they're a little bigger, with rougher shells, and are much less sweet. There is "no formal botanical distinction between bananas and plantains" so the names are used synonymously depending on how you use the fruit (for cooking or just eating it as is). My dad eats plantains all the time, I think they're gross.
