Star Wars: Episode I - The Beginning (AKA DuracellEnergizer's Take On TPM) — Page 3

I first decided to write up my own version of the PT years ago, back in 2008. My original plan was to take the George Lucas scripts and simply touch them up - leave most of the actual storyline, characters, dialogue, scenes, etc. intact, but change some of the details so they would line up more with how I thought the PT should have unfolded (older Anakin, Yoda as Obi-Wan's master, clones as the enemy, stuff like that).

The decision was made to take AOTC - the prequel I thought was the worst and need the most rewriting - fix it up, and then work my way backward to the TPM script, touch it up, then finish with ROTS. In the end, though, that plan fizzled out; I did rewrite AOTC, but eventually tossed it out, never finishing the touch up on TPM or getting to ROTS. When I decided to start again on my alternate PT, I went with the classic linear approach - first prequel first, second prequel second, etc, etc. Instead of just touching up the Lucas scripts, I would scrap them almost totally, using only some of the plot ideas and scenes as a framework of sorts - a bare foundation to build upon.

But though the "Touched Up PT Edition" never made it off the ground, I did write down some ideas on how it would all unfold; here are the "touch ups" I conceived for TPM.

========

The Clone Wars begin shortly before the first episode of the trilogy. Again, the conflict begins with inner turmoil affecting the Republic, with several dissatisfied planets seeking to separate and establish their own independant confederacy. The war causes peaceful trading relations between the Neimoidians and the people of Naboo to dissolve. The Trade Federation blockades Naboo, ultimately leading to a plan to invade the world and take direct control of its resources.

Obi-Wan is older, thirty years old, a Jedi Knight who was trained by Jedi Master Yoda. He is the only ambassador sent to Naboo; Qui-Gon is not with him. Ultimately he's the one who discovers Anakin on Tatooine and decides to take the boy on as his Padawan.

Qui-Gon is no longer the Master who trained Obi-Wan. Instead he is a friend of Obi-Wan, almost a father figure. His role is reduced; he does not journey with Obi-Wan to Naboo or Tatooine. He weilds a blue-green lightsaber instead of a green one.

Owen Lars is introduced. He is the half-brother of Anakin, born two years before him. He lived with Shmi and Anakin his whole life. He unsuccessfully attempted to change Anakin's mind when the boy chose to leave Tatooine to train under Obi-Wan, leading to a life-long grudge towards the Jedi Knight.

Palpatine (in his Darth Sidious persona) is never the shadowy Sith Lord working behind the scenes to sow discord within the Republic. Darth Maul fills that role, working as Palpatine's figurehead.

Darth Maul's role is expanded. He is the one who communicates with the Separatists and guides their actions (under Palpatine's orders). The end duel between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan ends with the Jedi slashing him through the shoulder instead through the torso. Maul survives and recovers to menace the Jedi again.

Anakin is twenty when Obi-Wan discovers him. He is not conceived by midi-chlorians and isn't "born from a virgin"; his father was an unknown Force-sensitive man who had a brief relationship with Shmi before he mysteriously disappeared.

The Gungans do not possess a thick Jamaican accent, and speak nearly average Basic.

Jar Jar Binks has a child-like personality, but he is also brave and not a bumbling buffoon.

The Podrace is replaced with a skyhopper race.

A mutual attraction between Anakin and Padmé is established almost instantly upon their introduction to one another. By the end of the first prequel, a tenuous romance is formed between them.

The Jedi are much like the Jedi in George's PT, and their opinion of and reaction towards Anakin is the same.

The following is adapted from xhonzi's "Prequel Rewriters - Questions to think about" thread. Hopefully it'll give a clear view of where I'm going with my rewrite and provide some back story to the more nebulous aspects of the universe I'm creating.

And yes, I know, I should have written and posted this up before I started posting anything else. As they say, though, hindsight is always 20-20.

...

The Setting

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ;-)

Are you focusing on the Clone Wars?

In the first two episodes, yes.

Who are the Clones?

The clones are the foot soldiers of the Kaminoans, the Republic, and various renegade factions within the Republic. They are grown from samples taken from many different individuals - both Force-sensitive and not - from many different species.

How does the war pertain to them?

Kaminoan clones: they are little more than drones, genetically modified and conditioned to serve their Kaminoan masters without question. They live and die only to serve the will of their creators.

Republic clones: grown to fight for the Republic against the Kaminoans and other enemy factions. Most of these clones aren’t as ruthlessly conditioned as Kaminoan clones, and therefore are more versatile and free-willed.

Renegade clones: Republic clones that were grown improperly and went insane, Republic clones that defected, or clones grown by rogue geneticists and black market biotech firms for disreputable individuals and organizations. The personalities, allegiances, and goals of these clones vary, but most tend to be enemies of the Republic.

How does Cloning become irrelevant by the start of Episode 4?

By the end of the Clone Wars cloning pretty much becomes illegal for the most part. Only later, once Palpatine comes into power, are clones grown again - for his own use, though.

How is cloning limited to the point that the whole story doesn’t get consumed by the idea of clones replacing major player?

This is a tough one. All I can say that the protagonists get lucky and never stumble into a situation where their genetic material falls into the hands of an enemy or where they can be replaced with a clone.

What is the "war" setting for your story?

In Ep. III the Clone Wars will be long over. The war will be between the Republic and the Separatists, like in the "canon" Eps. II & III.

Is the War ‘Symmetrical’ (i.e. WWII) or is it ‘Asymmetrical’ (i.e. Iraq War or the OT Empire vs Rebellion)

The Clone Wars (plural) are pretty much both, depending on the enemies involved; the Kaminoans and Mandalorians are both rather large factions, and rival the Republic in size, but there are also countless other factions that are much smaller in size and influence battling for independence or conquest.

The Separatist Conflict is pretty much symmetrical.

Does your story feature "soldiers"? Who are they? Are the main characters soldiers in the War? Leia’s and Ben’s comments seem to indicate that they were.

Yes, there are. Bail Organa and Ben both fight in the Clone Wars, with Ben sometimes serving Bail, and Ben becomes a general during the Separatist Conflict.

Who are the armies? Does the Republic have its own army, or do each of the independent planets have their own armies? Who is the enemy large enough that this is a full scale war?

The Republic does have its own army, consisting of clones and regular recruits both, though a number of planets and systems do have their own private armies. The Kaminoans and Mandalorians have their own armies which rival the Republic’s.

What are the objectives of both sides in the War? What are they fighting over?

The Clone Wars:

The Kaminoans have exhausted the resources of their home galaxy, and need the vast resources of the Star Wars galaxy to keep their civilization alive. Plus the Kaminoans are fanatical eugenicists obsessed with genetic purity and perfection, and want all sentient species to adopt their ways.

The Mandalorians just want power and worlds to rule over.

The Republic is fighting to keep their dominion in one piece.

The Separatist Conflict:

The Separatists want separation from an increasingly corrupt Republic.

The Republic doesn’t want any planets/systems to leave.

When did/does the War start?

The Clone Wars began in 60 BBY, twenty years before Ep. I

The Separatist Conflict begins in 21 BBY, almost three years before Ep. III

How does the War end?

The Clone Wars pretty much end with the pacification of the various dissonant factions, the defeat of the Mandalorians and the end of their culture, and the virtual extermination of the Kaminoans. Most of these events will not directly occur in any of the Episodes, though the last major battle with the Mandalorians will be shown briefly in Ep. II.

Do you show Obi-Wan receiving training from Yoda?

No, but it will be alluded to.

Do you show Anakin receiving training from Obi-Wan?

Some training, yes, but most of it will occur offscreen.

Are Obi-Wan and Anakin friends? When do they have the chance to establish this friendship

They are. Their friendship begins in Ep. I

How many years before Episode 4 does your story take place and how old are the main characters?

Ep. I takes place 40 BBY (before the battle of Yavin, or before ANH); Obi-Wan is twenty years old, Anakin is fifteen, and Amidala is fourteen.

Ep. II takes place 35 BBY; Obi-Wan is twenty-five, Anakin is twenty, and Amidala is nineteen.

Ep. III takes place 19-18 BBY; Obi-Wan is forty-one, Anakin is thirty-six, and Amidala is thirty-five.

How will you handle the surprises in the OT? Will you set out to protect them from a chronological viewer? Or will you show them happen?

Few to none of the surprises in the OT are going to be preserved in my PT. Prequels are just sequels which take place before the original work instead of after, and sequels are always meant to be seen after the original. That’s my approach, anyway.

Will you show Yoda?

Yes. He won’t be wielding a lightsaber, though.

Will you show that Luke has a twin sister? Named Leia?

I will show Amidala giving birth to the twins. I don’t think it’s necessary to reveal their names or even their respective genders at this time, though.

Will you reveal that Anakin becomes Darth Vader?

Yes.

Will you have surprises in your new PT? Will it affect anything that we thought we already knew in the OT?

Yes, one. I won’t go into specific details, but I will say that Obi-Wan taking Luke to be raised by Owen and Beru on Tatooine was only Plan B.

?

How does the Jedi/Dark Jedi/Sith conflict play into the back story of the War, if at all?

The origins of the Clone Wars have no roots in the Jedi/Dark Jedi/Sith conflict, though each of those factions get swept up and/or try to take advantage of the wars for their own benefits.

The Separatist Conflict is vaguely tied to the darksiders, though, as Palpatine is a Sith Lord and Dooku is a Dark Jedi.

?

If it does, then how does the Galaxy allow for a Dark Jedi/Sith/Palpatine to be left in charge of the Empire when all is said and done?

Palpatine’s nature as a darksider isn’t common knowledge with the general populace. Even if it was, there isn’t much they could do about it.

?

How many Jedi are we talking about here? A handful like the OT? Two-three handfuls like the GPT? Or a lot a lot?

There are about 140 billion Jedi spread throughout the Republic.

?

How many Dark Jedi/Sith? Please say not 2 per movie.

There are countless Dark Jedi. As for the Sith, there are only three in Eps. I & II, and thirteen by Ep. III - fourteen, if you count Anakin.

?

What kind of powers do the Jedi/Dark Jedi/Sith have beyond those seen in the OT?

Pretty much all the Force powers shown in the Tales of the Jedi and Dark Empire comics are available to the Jedi/darksiders, but I probably won’t be showing too many of them.

What is the Galaxy's general response to Jedi? Are they all assumed to be heroes? Or are people more like Han where they think that it's all religious nonsense?

It depends on where you go and whom you encounter. Some love the Jedi, others hate them, some others are indifferent, and even more are practically ignorant of their very existence.

?

How do your Jedi dress? (Please say it's not in "I'm disguised as a hermit" robes.)

Jedi Apprentice (Initiate)

Jedi Apprentice (Padawan)

Jedi Knight

Jedi Master

?

How organized are the Jedi? Are they like a police force in space (like the Green Lantern Corps?) or are they more like wizards that are off doing their own thing and maybe have some form or correspondance or a council every now and then? Or something less than that?

The Jedi are pretty much like a police force, though they can go off and just wander from place to place if they wish.

?

Where does the Empire come from? From within the crumbling Republic or without? If from within, are the forces that cause the crumbling also responsible for the War and are they manipulating to create an Empire as in George's PT?

The Empire is formed from the Republic. Palpatine used the chaos and corruption in the Senate that followed the Clone Wars to rise to a position where he could take over and proclaim himself Emperor.

?

How do the droids fit in to your new story, if at all?

They receive cameos, nothing more.

?

How is Anakin seduced by the Dark Side? What convinces him to serve the Emperor, the Empire and the Dark Side for 20+ years before allowing Luke to show him the error of his ways. After fighting through the Clone Wars, Anakin wants nothing more than to see peace and order restored in the Republic, and believes Palpatine is the only politician with the vision to make it happen. With the Separatist Conflict rearing it’s ugly head, Anakin becomes completely fed up with the cycle of violence and destruction. So when Palpatine finally reveals his nature as

a darksider to him, Anakin is firmly convinced that he can only see his dream achieved by embracing the dark side, and he does so.

I'm going to go ahead and read this and give you some feedback. The only reason I haven't done this yet, could be the same reason some others haven't, and that's just that as soon as I saw Gungans, Naboo, etc. I stopped reading. I think most people on these boards cringe like I do when they see PT names. If your story goes off on its own direction, I strongly suggest you just use new names. I'll get back to you with feedback after I read this. I can see you've really put a lot of work into this. Thanks for posting.

I understand where you're coming from, VideInfra78. But I've always felt that the Gungans themselves had potential, potential that was wasted. To simply throw them out/replace them would be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater for me. I've tried to reinvent the Gungans, removing the racist characteristics and establishing them as an intelligent and noble race.

As for Naboo, I've never really been bothered by it - concept or name - so never felt compelled to do away with it. I have considered changing the spelling of "Naboo" to "Nabu", though. Would that be a reasonable compromise?

I have to echo VideInfra.  I personally doubt that anyone starting with  George's PT base can deliver a satisfying PT to me.  That's why I don't watch fanedits of PT movies (though I've tried a couple) and immediately dismiss something that includes Naboo or Gungans, etc.

Heaven knows, it' hard enough to dump all of the influences from the gPT even when you're trying.  Let alone when you're selectively trying to include stuff.

You better not dismiss my Gungans. :p

Like I said, I can see where you're coming from - I myself have a hard time reading anything Star Wars that heavily features PT-style Sith & Jedi. But I'm primarily writing this script for myself, though, more than for anyone else. Sure, I like sharing it with others and don't mind receiving criticism, but it's going to reflect my specific tastes and I'm not very interested in tailoring it to suit anybody else's.

I appreciate the feedback, though. It's nice to know where everyone's coming from.

A small update; I've gone back to my earlier posts and changed the spelling of "Naboo" to "Nabu", along with making a few other minor edits to the script.

But then that would make them "Nabubians."  Not nearly as funny.

Just bumping the thread to say that I'm not going to be updating this script anymore - at least, not for the forseeable future. Writer's block, a lack of motivation, and a general loss of interest have worked their black wonders on me, so I'm calling it quits.

I'm thinking of writing up treatments for a new saga that completely disregards the films - OT included - and the EU. It'll be darker, more violent and sexual - kind of like Star Wars meets Excalibur - totally different from George's films in tone and feel. I don't know if I'll get anywhere with it, though; it's all just an idea ...

For anyone who may have been following this thread, here's a link to the final act of this script:

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/066/3/1/star_wars_reimagined__episode_i__appendex__by_duracellenergizer-d4s1ln7.pdf

Since it's from an earlier draft, it doesn't mesh 100% with the version I've had posted here, and it contains some elements that I had - or had planned to - omit/alter in the final draft. It does, however, provide a conclusion of sorts and more-or-less shows where I was going with this.

I'll post rough synopses for the Ep. II-III scripts that I had planned on writing later.

Here is the synopsis for the cancelled Ep. II rewrite, as I promised.

Star Wars: Episode II - Knights of the Republic

Timeframe: 35 BBY (about five years after Episode I)

We begin on the surface of Nabu, in the new capital city of Hales. It is the fifth anniversary of Queen Amidala Naberrie's coronation, and there is much celebration in the streets, with a float parade moving down the main street of the city. On the top of the grandest float, Queen Amidala sits atop a regal throne, waving to the jubilant crowd around her. In a tall building overlooking the celebration, a single man crouches in a dark room, looking out through a small window at the celebration below. This man is an assassin, garbed in close-fitting black garb, with a sniper rifle aimed through the window at the Queen. The assassin calibrates his weapon, gets Amidala in his crosshairs, and then pulls the trigger.

The Queen is hit by the projectile, and she topples from the float to the ground below, dead with a hole through her skull. The shouts of celebration quickly turn to screams of horror. A few bystanders quickly make out where the shot originated from, and alert the authorities. The assassin, aware that his cover has been blown, quickly jumps to his feet, and sprints from the room. As he climbs down a few floors, he is greeted by a retinue of armed policemen. They open fire, and the enemy jumps through the nearest window, shattering the pane of glass and falling the remaining stories to the ground. He hits the ground hard but survives relatively unscathed, though his leg is badly sprained. He gets to his feet and begins to hobble away, pulling out a blaster to ward away anyone who tries to get in his way.

The assassin comes to an alley, but as he ducks into its shadowy depths, a large figure lunges out. A mechanical arm goes out, colliding with the assassin, knocking the blaster out of his hand and throwing him off his feet. From the alley steps a large mechanical skeleton, white with a white cloak and skull-like face containing yellow, reptilian eyes. This is the remains of the Kaleesh warrior Qymaen jai Sheelal, resurrected in the form of a cyborg killing machine.

The assassin moves quickly, pulling a second blaster out from a concealed holster, but the cyborg is quicker. With lightning speed Sheelal steps forward, and sends one of his solid metal feet crashing down on the man's hand, smashing it and the blaster underfoot. The assassin howls with agony, and desperately begins trying to pry his ruined arm out from under the Kaleesh's heel.

Sheelal takes his foot off the enemy's shattered hand, then seizes the man's head in one of his large durasteel hands, lifting the man up, allowing him to flail helplessly in the air. At that moment a young woman, garbed in the uniform of a regular Nabuan bodyguard, comes stepping around the corner. This is the true Queen Amidala, the Queen killed by the assassin being a decoy. Seeing the assassin trapped in the Kaleesh's grip, she immediately begins telling him to free him, to let him live. The cyborg gives the Queen one look, then closes his fist around the enemy's head. The wet sound of bone disintegrating flies through the air, and the assassin's body spasms once with death, then goes still. The enemy dead, Sheelal drops the corpse to the ground. Frozen with horror, Amidala just stands there, and the cyborg leaves the scene, ignoring the Queen completely as he steps past her.

We now move to another planet, the world Concord Dawn. This area of the planet is very rainy, with thick grey cloud cover hovering over a surface of muddy plains. Through the sky streak several Republic gunships, moving towards a point on the horizon. The ships soon come to their destination, a large stone citadel protected by a battalion of Mandalorians. The gunships land and open up, spilling their soldiers to the ground, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi among them. The Jedi activate their lightsabers, and soon the battle between the Republic forces and the Mandalorians is joined.

The two sides battle fiercely, and the two Jedi, skilled though they are, find the Mandalorians very capable adversaries indeed. Regardless, the Republic soldiers begin to overwhelm the Mandalorians. Soon the battle is over; the citadel is taken and most of the Mandalorians are either dead or captured.

The Jedi then enter the citadel. They make their way through the passages and corridors of the structure, finding no Mandalorians to block their way. They enter a turbolift, and take a ride down to the lowest level of the building. Once they step out, they find themselves in a vast laboratory housing countless transparisteel cylinders containing gestating beings. The citadel is a Mandalorian cloning facility, and Obi-Wan and Anakin have come to appropriate it for the Republic.

As they move towards the panel that controls the functions of the cloning cylinders, they find that the tanks have been taken off-line, and that if power isn't restored immediately, the clones will die. Anakin quickly tries to restore power, but nothing works.

At that point a Mandalorian, encased in pure white armour, steps out from the shadows, revealing himself to the Jedi. He holds out a plastic circuit board, and tells the Jedi that without it, the cloning cylinders cannot be brought back online. At that point he places the card in a pouch strapped to his side, then pulls out a lightsaber, activating its purple blade. At that point the Jedi activate their own lightsabers, and a fierce duel begins. In the end the Mandalorian is slain, and Obi-Wan quickly retrieves the card from his person; placing the board back in its proper place in the panel, power is soon restored to the cloning cylinders. Anakin pulls the helmet from the dead Mandalorian's head, revealing him to be a clone of Mace Windu. The clone is somewhat younger than his template, with close-cropped black hair and a barcode tattooed on his forehead. The apprentice makes a joke about how Windu shouldn't lend his image to inferior products, and Obi-Wan scolds him light-heartedly.

The story moves forward with Obi-Wan and Anakin being sent to Nabu to guard Amidala from a radical political movement that wants to see her dead. It is here where we are introduced to Cos Palpatine, the son of Grand Vizier Dantius Palpatine and Amidala's closest confidant.

As the Jedi guard the Queen, she and Anakin begin to get closer. He eventually shows her the lightsaber he built, revealing that its unique cyan glow comes from the crystal pendant she gave him years ago, which he installed within its inner workings. Obi-Wan notices the growing bond between them, and cautions Anakin about getting attached to her.

Eventually, the radical faction after Amidala sends another assassin to kill her, but the Jedi stop him in time; unfortunately, this assassin is killed by palace guards before the Jedi can get any information out of him.

Soon, Amidala reveals to Anakin that she is no longer the true ruler of Nabu, that the Parliament of Nabu - governed by Grand Vizier Palpatine - have taken complete control of the planet and ushered in a totalitarian rule, placing the cyborg Qymaen jai Sheelal as her caretaker, that she has been left as little more than a figurehead with no real power, and that the faction targeting her is a Nabuan liberation movement. Anakin takes this information to Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan says their job is to protect the Queen, that the Council will not allow interference with the planet's system of government. Anakin begins to argue, but in the end he begrudgingly decides to go along with Obi-Wan's orders.

Soon, the Jedi Council makes contact with Obi-Wan, telling him that he must leave Nabu and join Jedi Master Jard Dooku on a mission to the edge of the Galaxy, into Kaminoan territory, where they must destroy a gravity generator that enables stable hyperspace travel between the Kaminoan galaxy and Republic space. Before Obi-Wan leaves, he admonishes Anakin again not to get involved with the conflict between the Liberators and the Parliament. Anakin tells him he won't go against him. After Obi-Wan leaves, though, Amidala begins trying to convince Anakin to disobey his master, to help her and Cos slip out of the palace and join the Liberators. Anakin refuses, but his conscience begins to eat away at him. Eventually, the young Jedi decides to make contact with the Jedi Council themselves to obtain permission to help overthrow the Parliament. The Council refuses to grant him permission, though, echoing Obi-Wan's earlier sentiments. With this, Anakin decides to disobey the Council, and he decides to dedicate himself totally to Amidala and the Liberators.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan and Dooku - along with several other Jedi - have finally arrived at the edge of the Galaxy. Waiting for them, though, isn't just the Kaminoan gravity generator, but a whole Kaminoan fleet as well. The Republic ship is boarded, the crew captured, and soon Obi-Wan along with the other Jedi find themselves on a journey into the heart of Kaminoan space. Here we learn that Dooku has been secretly harbouring resentment towards Obi-Wan for years, who he blames for the death of his old apprentice Qui-Gon Jinn.

Back on Nabu, Anakin along with Amidala and Cos have managed to ally themselves with the Liberators. Soon a coup is underway, and the Liberators are in open conflict with the Parliament. It is here that Anakin takes his first major step toward the dark side. As the Liberators and Parliament forces battle, Anakin and Amidala finds themselves at the mercy of the Kaleesh Qymaen jai Sheelal. Anakin quickly moves to defend the Queen from the cyborg, who unsheathes a pair of lightsabers he bought off the black market. As the two combatants battle, it becomes clear that the cyborg is the stronger of the two; Sheelal begins to wear Anakin down, taunting him as he strikes several painful blows. As one of the Kaleesh's lightsabers carves a nasty gash into the flesh below one of Anakin's eyes, he mocks the Jedi one final time, remarking that his unique cyan lightsaber will make an excellent addition to his collection. At that point Anakin opens himself to the dark side of the Force, and with restored strength, begins to turn the tables on the evil cyborg. With powerful rage, Anakin begins to push Sheelal back. Soon, the Jedi cuts away both of the cyborg's arms, then cuts him down. He begins slashing down at the fallen cyborg with a berserker rage, carving the Kaleesh into pieces as Amidala screams at him to stop.

We now near the end. Obi-Wan and Dooku have escaped the Kaminoans and have returned to the Galaxy - their friendship now severely tainted - and the coup on Nabu has been successful; Dantius Palpatine along with his fellow Parliament members have been arrested and are awaiting trial, and a new government is in the process of being formed.

Anakin's involvement in the coup is discovered by the Jedi Council, and he is soon taken to speak before them. Anakin unhesitatingly rebukes the Jedi, condemning them for their complacency and lack of empathy. In the end the Council declares Anakin a Jedi no longer, and Mace Windu himself orders the former apprentice to relinquish his lightsaber to him. Anakin angrily turns away from the Council member, and instead goes to Obi-Wan instead, telling his master that he is the only Jedi whom he still respects and the only one who can have his lightsaber. Obi-Wan accepts the lightsaber, and Anakin leaves the Council chambers with his head held high.

Later, back in the palace on Nabu, Anakin tells Amidala about his excommunication from the Order, and that he can now devote himself completely to the restoration of Nabu's government. At that point a courier walks in, presenting a small plastic cylinder to Anakin. Thanking the courier, Anakin takes the container and unscrews the top, dumping its contents - his lightsaber - into his open hand. Anakin exchanges glances with Amidala, then looks the saber over. Smiling wistfully, he returns the saber to his side, clipping it on his belt.

A few months pass, and the former Nabuan Parliament members have all been found guilty of crimes against the people and have been sentenced to life in prison. At one of these prisons is Dantius Palpatine, housed in a small cell and garbed in drab brown prison coveralls.

Through an intercom Palpatine is told he has a visitor, and the cell door opens, allowing his son Cos Palpatine accompanied by a pair of guards to step through. Dantius quickly leaps up from his bunk, grabbing his son by the front of his tunic and slams him up against the wall, calling him a traitor. At that point a mechanical beep comes from the younger Palpatine's throat, followed by an emotionless computer voice that begins a short countdown. Dantius quickly realizes this isn't his son, but a human replica droid with a built-in bomb.

The bomb goes off, reducing Palpatine, the guards, and every other nearby living being into dust, and blows a massive hole in the wall that opens outside. From atop the roof of a nearby building stands a dark figure - the Sith Lord Maul, alive and well. His face grim, he watches flame blaze from the gapping hole in the prison's side, then turns around and walks off.

Elsewhere on Nabu, Anakin and Amidala sit together in a lush field, the sun blazing down around them. They are both very happy, and are talking about the happy future of the world around them. As they continue to talk about the burgeoning new government, though, Anakin reveals that he has his own vision for Nabu's future, one far darker than Amidala's. As his word begins to appal Amidala, the sky grows overcast, violently swirling with dark clouds. At that point Anakin vanishes, and this scene is revealed to be a dream.

Amidala begins calling out for Anakin, demanding to know where he's gone as she climbs to her feet. As she turns around, she comes face-to-face with a towering Gothic cathedral. Hoping to find Anakin within, Amidala enters the dark depths of the titanic structure.

As she makes her way along the damp, mildewy cathedral walkway, Amidala begins to hear the faint sound of lightsabers clashing in the distance. As she moves closer toward the sounds, she soon finds the source; Anakin, with a crimson lightsaber, engaged in fierce duel with a figure in dark armour, robes, and cloak. Amidala watches as the dark figure wears Anakin down, and screams out when he cuts the former Jedi down.

Amidala runs over to the fallen man's side, and cradles his still form as she begins to cry. As she weeps, the dark figure moves closer to her, bringing his lightsaber up close to his face. As the cyan light plays over his enshrouded face, revealing a disturbingly familiar nose and chin, deep, almost mechanical, breathing begins to issue from his lungs.

At this point Amidala bolts upright in bed, out of her nightmare and awake. She breathes heavily, sweat pouring down her face. She wipes a few strand hairs away from her face, and when she looks out, she sees Anakin stand out on the balcony leading out of the room, his back to her. She gets up out of bed and joins Anakin on the balcony. As he turns to her, they both smile. She then moves over to his side, and places her head on his shoulder. Together they look out over the Nabu countryside, watching the bright new sunrise together. The end.

Here it is, the synopsis for my cancelled Ep. III rewrite. As this was the least thought-out of my rewrites, I don't have much of a cohesive plot to share, just bits and pieces of the details I'd come up with, so forgive me for any incompleteness/disjointedness present.

Star Wars: Episode III - A Lost Hope

Timeframe: 19 BBY (about sixteen years after Episode II)

The Clone Wars are long over, but the galaxy is still not at peace. The Republic is now at war with the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a large secessionist faction lead by the fallen Jedi Master Jard Dooku.

Cos Palpatine has been elected Supreme Chancellor of the Republic.

Anakin Skywalker now works for Palpatine as his most trusted bodyguard.

The Nabu have completely abandoned monarchal rule for a strictly autonomous democracy. As such, Amidala Naberrie is no longer the Queen of Nabu.

Anakin and Amidala are man and wife, living on Coruscant.

The Jedi Order is in turmoil, torn between their service to an increasingly corrupt Senate and Chancellor and their loyalty to the Republic. As a result, many Jedi have abandoned the Order to fight for the Separatists.

Palpatine, fearing the Jedi may hold treasonous sentiments toward him, places Anakin on the Jedi Council to keep his eye on them.

A Separatist fleet attacks Coruscant, and Palpatine is captured and taken prisoner aboard the warship Invisible Hand.

Anakin is reunited with his former teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi. Together they infiltrate the Invisible Hand, where they fight their way through Dooku's rogue Jedi acolytes and apprentice Asajj Ventress to where Palpatine is detained. The two Jedi confront Dooku, engaging him with their lightsabers. Soon, Obi-Wan is seriously wounded and drops out of the fight, leaving Anakin to battle Dooku alone. Anakin eventually triumphs, cutting Dooku's hands off and bringing him to his knees. It is at that point that Dooku reveals to Anakin that Palpatine is the Dark Lord of the Sith, and that together they can destroy him and end his tyranny before it can begin. Palpatine admits to being a Sith, but tells Anakin that he has the power to bring an end to the endless conflict ravaging the galaxy, and that killing him will bring nothing but further chaos. Anakin decides to side with Palpatine and decapitates Dooku, becoming Palpatine's Sith apprentice. With that, the two escape the ship with an unconscious Obi-Wan in tow; unbeknownst to them both, however, Obi-Wan overheard Palpatine's confession before passing out, and is now aware of the Chancellor's true nature.

Obi-Wan eventually regains consciousness, and informs the Jedi Council of Palpatine's Sith nature. Mace Windu with a few fellow Jedi then go to arrest Palpatine at his office. As they do so, though, Anakin draws his lightsaber and attacks them. He quickly bests Windu's retinue, but fails to beat down the seasoned Jedi Master. Anakin collapses, defenseless before Windu's blade. At that point Palpatine, who has been silently watching this duel unfold, intervenes, unleashing his potent Force lightning upon the Jedi. Windu braces himself against the barrage, and soon pushes it back, knocking Palpatine back and down. Windu then, enraged, goes to strike the Sith Lord down before he can regain his senses. Before the Jedi's blade can make contact, Anakin re-enters the fray, igniting his lightsaber and slicing Windu's hand off. Palpatine takes advantage of Windu's sudden defenselessness, and finishes the Jedi Master off with a second volley of Force lightning.

Palpatine declares that the Jedi Council can no longer be trusted, and charges Anakin with the razing of the Jedi Temple. With a retinue of stormtroopers, Anakin lays siege to the Temple, slaying all the Jedi Knights and Masters they find, subdueing and imprisoning the apprentices for future indoctrination in serve to Palpatine. Obi-Wan and Yoda manage to survive the pogrom, and go into hiding.

The two Jedi make contact with Amidala, and inform her of Anakin's fall to the dark side. Together, they convince her into leading the ex-Jedi into a trap. She informs Anakin that Obi-Wan and Yoda are on the molten world of Mustafar, and he takes this information to Palpatine. Together, they journey to the hellish planet to confront the Jedi.

Anakin meets Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Obi-Wan entreats Anakin to leave Palpatine, that he knows he isn't a complete monster, that it isn't too late to turn back from the dark side. Anakin refuses to listen, stating that the power of the dark side is the only power which can aid him in bringing peace to the Republic. In the end, the two fail to resolve their differences, and engage in a lightsaber duel. Eventually Anakin oversteps, losing his right hand and lightsaber to Obi-Wan, and tumbles over the side of a ravine. He grabs hold of an outcropping rock, but before Obi-Wan can come to his aid and pull him up, he loses his grip and falls into the river of lava far below.

Also on Mustafar, Yoda encounters Palpatine with an entourage of crimson-garbed Royal Guards. The Jedi Master swiftly bests the Guards, but finds Palpatine to be more than a match for him. The two engage in a Force duel, but in the end neither master of the Force and overcome the other, and their battle comes to a stalemate.

Anakin, through the use of the Force, survives his plunge into the magma, but most of his body has been burnt away. Palpatine finds his dying apprentice, and whisks him away to safety.

Yoda and Obi-Wan meet with Amidala again on Coruscant. She reveals to them the fact that she is pregnant with twins, and plans to leave Anakin. The three depart the city-planet.

Anakin Skywalker is brought to a medical centre, where bionic parts are grafted to his ravaged flesh, transforming him into an monstrosity of black armour and machinery. Once the transformation is complete, he enquires Palpatine as to the whereabouts of Amidala; at that point the Chancellor reveals that Amidala has left him, vanishing without a trace. Anakin, dismayed, roars with anguish and collapses to his knees, enraged and hurt.

Months pass, and Amidala gives birth to the twins, Luke and Leia Skywalker. She along with the Jedi decide to seperate the twins to protect them from Anakin and Palpatine. Amidala and Obi-Wan will take Leia to Alderaan to be raised by Bail and Breha Organa, where they will both watch over the girl, while Yoda will take Luke and journey to the swamp world of Dagobah.

As we come to an end, we see Imperial Star Destroyers in pursuit of Jedi starfighters outside the orbit of a large green world. Aboard one of the Star Destroyers we find Palpatine, now the Emperor of the newly formed Empire, looking out into space at the fleeing ships. Anakin enters the bridge, now fully dressed in his black robes, reborn as the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader. Vader joins Palpatine, and together they look out into space, perpared to track down and destroy all the Jedi scattered throughout the galaxy who will refuse to bow to their will. The end.
