Those look very, very nice Harmy! and can't wait to see the menu covers, I should have a screenshot for you very soon, he is getting it soon, and you captured EXACTLY what I was looking for, Thank you.

I'm happy that you like them :-)

Thank you also for respecting my wishes on the distribution of these covers for this set, I really appreciate that very much, you have turned out to be 1 Hell of a partner and Friend.

That feeling is mutual. It was all I could do to repay your help with my edits, so thank you :-)

You said it, Radi0n. :) Harmy, those rank among the finest custom Star Wars DVD covers I've ever seen. Some really cool Star Wars posters on the front covers, great shots from space battles on the back covers, a nice clean colorful layout and design, very professional looking, just excellent. =)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a frame list of the "bad" frames in the GOUT video, for all 3 films? I am tossing around an idea, and surely would love to see a list if someone may have took the time to find these errors already, it sure would help, here are a couple samples that I am talking about.

Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back

Thanks

Wow.  I have just finished watching the V3 DVDs with my son (I really wanted him to experience the original theatrical versions for his first experience).  I am amazed at how great these are on DVD.  It sure beats the hell out of resorting to my VHS copies (laserdisc  SE which I could only watch once).

The screenshots of the Blu-Ray version look great.  It fantastic to think there might eventually be an even better version available.

Thanks to Dark_Jedi and everyone else who has contributed to this project.  This is the first time I've been able to really enjoy watching the OT in years.

Wow. Those covers are the only ones I've ever been tempted to actually print out! Time to get some glossy paper and someone with an inkjet printer

And yeah, the V3 DVDs look great - thanks DJ! not everybody has a Bluray player yet - even on Plasma HDTVs. Old CRTs and LCD HDTVs do even better (and I think this beats the GOUT on the former).

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Thanks msycamore for that, it looks like all I have to do is repeat the frame before it, it seems the motion had already stopped, or I could just snag the frame from the PAL version, I have those to.

It's amazing how much something like the GOUT can hold up when treated properly and uprezed. The screens certainly look very promising. :)

It may be too late to consider going back and re-tweaking anything but there were two things that went through my mind just from browsing the past few pages:

-I notice that the BD version is red-biased compared to V3DVD, and also not quite as saturated. Was this intentional or is it just a fluxation caused by the upconversion? The V3 caps look like they have more natural colours in the skintones compared to the BD version caps, although maybe the examples I have seen are just not ideal. I'm not looking at them on a very well caliberated monitor right now, but I can at least see that the colour balances between them are different. Sorry if this was discussed pages earlier.

-Is it possible to apply any amount of mild sharpening either before or after upconversion (I suppose ideally before)? Of course, EE can be a huge problem. It is possible, however, to extract a suprising amount of extra picture detail from the GOUT when the image is sharpened. I don't know if this is possible to do without putting edges on things, but I do think it would help the picture if it can be done, as the script tends to smudge out a noticeable amount of the fine detail in its attempt to smooth out the artifacts. It may counteract the anti-grain filter, or it might not, but it is something to consider.

The film looks good regardless. It's utterly fascinating how one video source--the GOUT--has branched out into all these parallel and shared restorations that tackle the same problems in different and similar ways. No single film has had so much fan attention paid to it. I thought maybe our efforts would plateau around 2008 or 2009, but here we are a half decade after the GOUT came out and we're still finding new ways of improving on it.

Here are the barcode covers:

Please don't ask me for links to the full res versions, DJ wishes to distribute them only with the set and I fully respect that.

Pawesomeness! Hell, I will buy the empty cases for my GOUT! I will buy them right now!

V4?

LOL, not by me, no way, getting very tired of Star Wars LOL, but I may go back and fix some of the very bad frames, it is a lot more noticeable on these Blu version than the DVD versions, the 2 mentioned here are already fixed,

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Whats-missing-from-GOUT/post/457778/#TopicPost457778

but not sure if everyone wants to wait a little more for me to re-render and encode.

I say take as long as you like and as long as you are willing to spend on it.  My personal opinion is I'd rather wait for the best quality product possible:)

I'll gladly wait for any additional improvements you want to make to the Blu versions, especially if you're happier with the finished product!

So then I need to download the DVDs and your frame fixed better detail BD version.

Reecnode the BD to DVD and rebuild the DVDs.
Okay, fine. You talked me into it.

By the way, I'm really sorry DJ. I know how much you wanted to be free from this project. It sucks this would come up now when you were so close.

LOL, it's alright, it is really only 1 frame so far for SW that bothers me, and 2-4 in ESB, and I have not looked a Jedi yet.

The one for SW is the one I posted above, all that yellow bothers me, but Harmy did a great job getting most out, then I tweaked it even more to get more out, but it still is not perfect, but much better than it was.

The frames in ESB I already corrected, so this should not be to much more time consuming, my PC is pretty fast at rendering and encoding, and I already have all my settings.

I know I probably shouldn't have even bothered, but now that I have seen them, if I do nothing with them, then it will play on my mind, and it will bother me, especially if it is something I can fix, so PLEASE, if anyone knows of any other crappy frames that I should take a look at, PLEASE tell me which ones and for which film.

zombie84: Did you see those screen shots harmy posted on page 97 comparing the v3 DVD set to the new Blu-ray set? It seems like the v3 image looks a little too greenish, whereas the Blu-ray shot looked like the colors were more accurate, more neutral. What do you think?

As to the technical ideas, I wonder if that is possible, to retain more of the original detail, but still smooth away any artifacts from the up-res? Would be cool, if it could be done.

dark_jedi: Personally, I'd say take the extra time and re-render them for the most perfect video quality you can get. I think it's worth the wait. And you're only making a Blu-ray set like this once, so you might as well go all out and make it the very best it can be. :) Because, after this, we'll have to wait for either access to a 35mm film scan of the trilogy or Lucas to decide to be reasonable and release a fully restored new transfer of the trilogy, if we want to see Star Wars without the stupid SE stuff in any better quality. =)

Happy 4th of July to everyone! :)
