I'm still watching.  I don't stop watching the movie until it is over.

Here is an update of my thoughts

I truly realized the prequels sucked, when I tried to think of ways to fix them.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I could watch this continuity flaw for hours.  The guy sticks his right arm into the computer screen but slaps the other guy with his left arm.  It's driving me crazy!  It doesn't make sense!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Don't worry, it will be fixed on Computer Slap: Revisited.

Would this guy look that out of place in this sequence?

Sorry, bkev.  Something about that really made me laugh.

Fair enough.  Wait.. .was it ROTS I saw twice or AOTC?  I just remember going out of my way to see the movies with my dad at one point.  Probably saw both twice, but wasn't impressed.

Anyway, I have seen the RedLetterMedia review of AOTC but not TPM.  Should probably check that one out...

I don't think they suck at all.  That is, if you watch them with the commentary enabled, so you don't have to hear the actors speak.  And keep the volume low, so you can close your eyes and nod off while the movie's on.  Very relaxing.

I realized the prequels sucked when, I was watching AOTC on opening night and found myself bored during the speeder chase through Coruscant in the beginning of the movie.   I remember actually thinking "What's wrong?  Why am I not enjoying this?" as I was sitting in the theater.  Then is dawned on me, like a light being turned on in the dark, "this sucks!  The new Star Wars Sucks!!"

the seeds had been sewn with the Phantom Menace, but I allowed myself to be blinded by the fancy lightsaber fights & such.  But when AOTC wasn't any better, and was actually worse, that was it.  The veil had been lifted.

I am ashamed to admit, but I talked myself into thinking they were decent films until around 2006. My true contempt for them really came about as a result of the Red Letter Media TPM review.

I grew up with the VHS of the OT and TPM.  For some reason, when I was done with the OT, I didn't want to pop in TPM and I just started the OT again.  I never hated TPM but I realized there was something unlikeable about it, though I never thought deeply enough to find out what that was.  I saw AOTC and ROTS in theaters and though I remained excited throughout the films, many awkward/wtf moments kept me from enjoying the films completely.  Rewatching the prequels over the years, I just kept finding more and more I didn't like and didn't make sense.  There was no well defined moment where I thought "These movies suck."  Then coming across the Phantom Edit I was drawn into the larger world of this segment of Star Wars fandom.  Still, I don't hate the prequels.  They have some redeeming qualities and some fanedits can make them enjoyable again.

Like I said in the other thread, I think they're okay movies, but there's a ton of wasted potential. Like games like Star Wars: Galaxies or Knights of the Old Republic II, a few things they did get right, but there was so much they they got wrong that it overshadowed the good. If you narrow your eyes a whole lot you can see that the PT could have been a great series of films. But alas they are crap.

For a long time, though, I thought they were good movies. I always knew they weren't as good as the OT, but I admit that I was nine years old when TPM dropped and I was taken in by the flash and action of the PT. I may even have laughed at Jar-Jar *shudders*, but my mind has thankfully chosen to repress that memory.  (Though I do know my brother had a Jar-Jar t shirt, but he is also three years younger than I am, so...)

As I got older, the bloom started to come off the rose for the prequels. They became progressively less important to me as the OT became progressively more important to me. I am glad that I saw the OT first, even though I grew up with the 1997 SE and didn't learn of the plight of the OT for a long time, because I think that it stuck in my mind much better being my first experience with the films rather than TPM.

Even though I was growing out of the PT more and more as time went on, I didn't really acknowledge them as the piles of tripe they were until started hearing concentrated arguments against them, pointing out all the flaws and poor quality of the films in detail. This is when I started to get angry about them being bad. I think Red Letter Media's reviews were the final nail in the PT coffin for me.

I was an SE-lover for a long time to, as it was the version I grew up with; I was always a "Han Shot First" person, but the rest of it didn't really occur to me that it really affected the movies. It wasn't until I started talking to Tobar a few years ago that I started to get over it. And of course hearing of the change to Boba Fett's voice was inexcusable.

Seeing Ady's theatrical edition of ESB was like seeing a totally different and better movie, which surprised me, but in a good way. I never knew how much the SE affected the viewing of the movies for me, and how much removing all those little distractions made the movie better.

I can still watch the PT and it'll be an okay experience. The action is neat and eye-catching. But that's about all I can say for them. The OT is where it's at still, to this day.

I realized at the during Episode III when the very loose and crumbly characterisation and continuity was falling apart scene by scene. Sucks, because before that I absolutely adored the series. :(

I realized after I walked out of Attack of the Clones that there was no way that could have been a Star Wars film.

!!! Don't you know anything about Quantum portalizations?!?!??!! Of course it's like that, it's the ONLY WAY! See what slaps the individual is a quantum duplicated double version going through the interspatial portal. Due to the visual reflection of ye olde CRT monitor screen the quantum duplication process compensates by creating a mirror image of the object in question. If however the individuals were using LCD or, any such monitor with little or no reflection the compensation effect wouldn't have to occur.

When I finished watching AOTC and realized that TPM had no reason to exist.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

Gradually over the course of the years, I guess - by the time I watched the first Plinkett review, I thought they were pretty lame, character-wise.
But the reviews added some significant perspective, I'd say - perspective I should've gained myself, but whatever. For example, I've always felt that the characters and acting were "flat", but I somehow hadn't thought of the fact that TPM doesn't have any decent main character, which is a main contributing factor while it's so... "flat".

You can see it when feeling the tiny remnant of an urge to root and cheer for the characters when they overcome the baddies - when Padme corners Gunray, when Anakin wins the podrace/spacebattle, when the Jedi kick some robot ass, etc., and you can imagine how much more involved you'd have been, had those characters had a decent characterization, arc and actual determined motivation (rather than sheer dumb luck) behind their accomplishments.

The most rewarding moment is probably when Obi-Wan pwns Maul, but up to that moment, he's pretty much just been a snarky to boring side kick with very little character, or role.
Seeing Sebulba owned is more rewarding than seeing the space ship being blown up, because Anakin actually puts some effort into that - and that part's just filler, padding and basically a fun subplot at best.
