This is probably a conversation to move to another thread (the politics thread, probably).
Maybe it's easier to compare it to religion. I'm religious. When someone says "I hate religious fanatics!" I have an option. Either I can agree with their literal statement, because I too have nothing but disdain for religious fanatics. Or, I can try to understand what, by their logic, constitutes a fanatic. And this is where we'll disagree. A lot of people who issue that statement would include me and a lot of the good people of the Earth under the banner of "religious fanatic." It should be obvious that I don't hate all of those people. So I would therefore disagree with the statement, not as it was literaly made, but as the spirit of the statement intended. And perhaps you'll understand if I also take slight offense at the original statement if I detect its intention was to be offensive to me.
When V for Vendetta the comic book was published, I didn't give it too much attention. When V for Vendetta the movie was released, I anticipated seeing it. Perhaps I was in a good mood about it, but I never took the literal meaning of the movie "Bad governments should be corrected or fought and overthrown, violently when necessary." to flow to current events: "George W. Bush's America should be violently overthrown." Though I do know that a lot of people interpreted it that way. I don't think the original intention of the book was that and I don't think that the intention of all of the filmmakers was such either. Perhaps it was and I am willfully naive.
When it comes to BioShock Infinite, I see that "extreme" patriotism is what is being attacked. Like you, I have no problem condemning "extreme" patriotism. But I know that you and I would define that "extremism" differently and I suspect that we might define it very differently. It wouldn't surprise (or offend) me that you hold the private opinion that I am an extreme patriot, and need to tone it down somewhat. As your friend, I would also not be offended at an open discussion of such.
However, I don't know that I would extend the same courtesy to Irrational games and Ken* Levine. I don't think it is the gameplay of BioShock that so intrigues me... instead it is the world of Rapture. If the primary theme of the World of Columbia is intended to vilify a definition of extreme patriotism of which the designers believe I am a part- I don't think I would enjoy the experience. I would not boycott the game so much as spend my time and money on experiences that I would enjoy more. I would, however still be sad that I missed out on a BioShock game.
Does that clarify my position?
