TREADWELL COLLECTION

Prior to the digital days, Star Wars media collecting took place in the home recording VHS medium. Many thanks go out to TREADWELL who took the time and energy to preserve these Star Wars memories. From specials, commercials, interviews, to news reports and more, these tapes provide view points of the evolution of the Star Wars phenomenon.

This looks really interesting. As to the size, how about 2 DVD5s, same (or even slightly better) quality, quater (or less) the price of the media (well at least where I live).

Fascinating! This ROTJ Bootleg is the same one mentioned in the Theatrical Performance Preservation thread, right?. This whole Treadwell collection looks like a pretty interesting compilation of things over the years. Love the covers, by the way :).

From a forthcoming TWC288:

German THX - Alte Fassung (Old Version/Original) Comparisons

Would seem these came with the German VHS THX release.  Unknown generation loss on this copy but don't look too bad.  [pre-dates Wookiegroomer by a special edition and 10 years?)

(for those documenting pre-SE home video changes, please chime in if these colors and frame recompositions look similar to the laserdisc changes of the same time)  Images are forum scaled in half.

Star Wars :: Kreig Der Sterne

(there's a one frame red window frame under Chewie in these comparisons, haven't noticed this before.  Might be specific to this video.)

Empire Strikes Back :: Das Imperium schlägt zurück

Return of the Jedi :: Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter

That's funny how this presents shit quality next to even slightly more shit quality as some great achievement :-)

They had an English version of that clip, only not on the vhs but as a commercial i can clearly remember this in 1995 when i went out and bought the faces pan and scan tapes.

The letterbox limited edition was in less numbers i think and quite more expensive.

That video obviously shows the color correction and digital video noise reduction, someone on the other end of the video telecine obviously had to move some dials and choose the color levels and how much grain to try and masque out or clean up with the relatively infancy of dvnr tech of that era.

Even many years down the line Lowry who came up with an automatic algorithm could not do away with the so called sins of dvnr, a lot of releases needed to be checked or done frame by frame, otherwise you end up processing parts of the image you don't want to or removing more than grain.

I wonder where None got the Imax footage from, the online clip is so low quality i wish it would surface in better quality or be a bonus feature on the blu rays, but it won't be there any more than the theatrical originals.

I wish the other clips they redid for star wars in 70mm surfaced, like the falcons escape to hyperspace.

This was sort of a special edition before the special edition, if only in clips recreated for a documentary. Imagine if they went and back and redid all the effects in 70mm for imax with models and enhanced it with cgi like they did here.

But fans probably would hate that too, another version.

Not sure why but i think they redid  not just the opening stardestroyer flyover but the starfield as well for this, then did not use it again in 1997.

Would make sense, and you can see in the first RotJ pic above, how the original english was there and they rolled out the blue german text over it.

I've been searching through old forums for people mentioning old recordings/tapes.  Then asking them if I can digitize them and in return give them a copy.  This thread is about TREADWELL's collection.  He was active in the Special Edition era trading tapes with several other collectors.  The specific IMAX program:

Turner Entertainment Report Hollywood - IMAX/"Special Effects" (pkg) Produced by: Linda Mour

Is an in house production copy, with title placard.  In two versions, with and without voice over.  So someone in the industry was a SW fan and put together these segments and that recording made the tape trading rounds.

I wish the other clips they redid for star wars in 70mm surfaced, like the falcons escape to hyperspace.

Would be nice to see these things again.  The SW clips in this IMAX news segment are the Tantive capture, some behind the scenes of the SE Stormtrooper/dewback sequence, R2 in an archive space with models and two set ups of the Falcon escape.  (blue screen and light panels) One from a distance seeing all the gear/tech and a close up zoom.

Not sure why but i think they redid  not just the opening stardestroyer flyover but the starfield as well for this, then did not use it again in 1997.

Yeah it's a new shot from the ground up.  May have reused the models but that's about it.

The disc is on a.b.sw, anyone can take it an put it everywhere.

Impressive, very nice Treadwell and none! The quality of those alien sub screen-caps looking good. :)

None, do you happen to know if there's a good preservation of the old screen tests for Star Wars out there?

Keep up the good work you're doing!

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Rikter's "BLAK0009: The 1975 Casting Auditions" is probably high up on completeness and quality scales.  (but I don't think i've seen an alternative DVD version)

Thanks for the acknowledgement.  How have some of these finds helped out with the subtitle recreations?

Nice, thanks for the tip! I knew you would somehow sit on that knowledge. ;) Is this still seeded somewhere?

I was actually able to make a nice recreation of the Jedi - subs thanks to Videocollector's "theatrical performance bootleg" and indirectly thanks to you and LexX. :) Haven't checked out these yet, I already have all the correct timings in place, but these seems to be in nice quality, especially the Jedi going by the screen-cap, if I only had that quality when I did work on it. I'll definitely check these out.

Doesn't show up in th'spleen unseeded.  Can ask walkingdork over in this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Once-upon-a-time-on-MySpleen/topic/12652/page/5/

Yeah these would only added better clarification on font/shadow choice.  We didn't know the tape existed when you started working unfortunately.  Did they use the same font for all three films?

Some of the subtitled sections (7 or so) got picked up in this automated screen cap guide:

examples: (1/4th reduced)

Yes, they seem to have used the same font for both films as far as I can see, they do however look a little different due to being done in the analog age I presume. Just like the Lucasfilm logo, SW logo or the preface look slightly different in each film:

SW

Jedi

^ Seems to be the same font-family at least.
