The movie is just there so that the theatre can sell you drinks and popcorn.  They don't really make any money from the movie itself.

Which sort of makes me feel like a bad consumer since we never buy any concessions at the theatre.  As you said, my wallets already bled out due to ticket prices.

But then I remember... on average, people spend 110-130% on drinks and snacks as they do on tickets.  So when a movie makes 300 million dollars (but cost 300 million to make/market) that movie also made possible 350 million dollars of coke and popcorn sales (which cost probably a couple thousand dollars).  Theatres=making money.  Studios=breaking even.

True story.
