This is a reconstruction of the 1983 theatrical version of Return of the Jedi.

The main source is the 2019 UHD Blu-Ray, and the original shots were restored using the amazing 4K83 fan-preservation,
which is a scan of a 35mm film made by Team Negative 1. Thanks so much for this awesome release, Team Negative 1!

Sometimes entire shots or even sequences were used from 4K83, extensively cleaned and enhanced to match the look of the UHD Blu-Ray.
In other places, like for example the Ewok eyes or Vader’s eyebrows, only small portions of the shots were replaced.

All original shots were restored, including recomposited vfx and other “fixes” made for the Special Edition.

For v3.1, minor fixes were made, the biggest of which include adding a Jabba subtitle, which was missing in 3.0, and replacing the 5.1 English audio track, where in v3.0 a custom track with additional music in the Obi-Wan ghost scene was used by mistake.

Looked seamless to me.

Good stuff right there. the colors on the 2004/2006 dvds are icky

Looking fantastic Harmy. Can't wait until the despecialized trilogy is done. Will be the ultimate versions for me to watch.

Why is it ROTJ PDE always and i mean ALWAYS looks hugely better than the other PDE versions in my opinion? My answer: I think it's because ROTJ 2004SE is such a shoddy version that any improvments are going to look great. For one, the colour looks about 100x better in that recent clip.

(No disrepect to the other PDE versions by the way - just I see the improvments more in ROTJ because I really disliek the 2004 SE of this film much more than the rest).

Hang on, are you actually talking about the Partly Despecialized Editions or do you mean the new Despecialized ones?

And anyway, Jedi is also my favourite of the old PDE versions (and I mean the cut, not the film) but this new Despecialized Version should totally blow it out of the water, becuase as you can see in that clip, there will be no more purely GOUT shots where it can be helped (and unfortunately there are whole scenes like the music number where it can't) where the PDE was basically just splicing GOUT shots into the SE.

Side note: As you can see, the subtitles have not been replaced yet in that clip and to be honest I'm pissing blood just thinking about it, because where in STAR WARS replacing the subs was a matter of one scene, in Jedi they are all over the place. But as there seems to be high demand for original looking subs, I think I will do it and this time hopefully without drops in quality like in my ROTJ DVD reconstruction.

Ah sorry Harmy, I wasn't clear. I meant that any improvements to ROTJ in my opinion stand out more than some (not all) of your other work because ROTJ is so messed up in the 2004 SE. So any improvment (if only small) is going to look fantastic in ROTJ because there are so many more things wrong with it in the 2004 SE, but again my opinion. The fact you keep getting things better and better with each PDE makes it truly amazing.

I can take some of the changes in the 2004 SE for ANH and ESB by Lucas but the new stuff in ROTJ is just damn horrible. So I thank you for your work so far on ROTJ, I really do.

Was the atmosphere added in the SEs? Can't see it in the original. Otherwise looks good.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Author
Time

Oh, I think you're right  but I'll probably keep it this way, because I'm not sure if I'd be able to remove the atmosphere. I could try though...

Author
Time

It looks like the atmosphere might just be showing up in the '04 because of the difference in brightness.  Crank up the GOUT brightness and see if it shows up there.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Looks Great Harmy. Thought A New Hope was perfect.

Can't wait for this Jedi to complete the set.

Many thanks for doing this.
