Got the blu-ray box set at great price used, so did the trilogy back to back tonight with my roommate.
Part 3 was such a let down. It had good moments, but... Oh forget it!
It was utter crap. That was the mutant vs. human war? And what was with the sudden day to night time change thing in the final act? Was something major cut? Why the heck did they kill all the great characters off (or take away their power) before the final battle??? The end could have been filled with such great emotion, but it was pissed away. We got a lame final battle with a bunch of B-class mutants that we have no emotional connection to at all. Juggernaut's helmet looked so fake and plastic. The actor was weak. The first scene of the X-men fighting the sentinel had such promises, but disappointed quickly with the reveal that it was just a Star Trek holodeck rip off simulation. The casting of Beast was the only thing done with any shred of creative thinking, and or any shred of respect in keeping faithful with the original source material.
I agree with everything you said. It is truly amazing how much taking out one person (Bryan Singer) can do to a whole franchise. I hated how they killed off all the characters I liked the best and whom I felt had the most compelling plots. Prof X has always been my favorite, going as far back as the cartoons. Which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed First Class, I got to see Prof X in his younger days and I really enjoyed that. I hope that Singer follows up with another one.
EDIT: Also, Kelsey Grammer as Beast was a perfect casting decision the only diamond in the rough in that horrible atrocity of a movie. I wish that he had been cast way earlier in the franchise, I would have liked to see more of him. I also hated they "wrote out" Nightcrawler, he was awesome in X2.
