I think Robocop II has got better with age. Even Robocop III is a flick I'd rather watch than any of the prequels.

I could understand the third movie, but #2 was great. I always thought getting Frank Miller to write it was a great idea, since his Dark Knight Returns feels more like a Robocop story than it does Batman.

"RoboCop 2" is a freakin' masterpiece! And it's bazillion times better than most of the action movies we have these days!

That's like saying a steaming pile of crap smells better than a pile of bloated corpses rotting in the hot summer sun ;-)

I don't mind that so much, because it's supposed to be bad CGI. It's not trying to represent anything real. That's like saying Tron or The Lawnmower Man had bad CGI.

I didn't think it was meant to be bad.

Robocop 2 (the cyborg) was meant to be cutting edge technology, a more advanced version of the the first Robocop so having a giant plasma screen pop out of it's head for no good reason and do the growling Max Headroom thing really buggered up my enjoyment of a good film when it first came out and it looks much worse now.

Lawnmower Man was meant to be a representation of VR then (or at least very close to then) so it was pretty accurate even if the film was a pile of poo.

Tron's CGI isn't meant to be CGI (in the story) at all.

It's a visual representation of the interactions of programs and data in cyberspace that was rendered largely on a computer and it looks timeless.

In terms of looks, Grievous and Robocop 2 were about as convincing as each other.

Maximillian in The Black Hole was much more menacing than either of them and he was almost entirely a physical prop but the CGI Cylon Centurions in NuGalactica were also as threatening.

What made Grievous so goofy was more in the lines he said and the manner he was made to say them than the techniques used to render him.

If he had been vocally silent like Robocop 2 (sans CGI telly head) he would have been much more intimidating.

If you write Dirk Dastardly dialogue for a character it had better be a comedy no matter how that character is rendered.

The design could have been very threatening, cape and all if it was treated as something less than a joke.

His animated Clone Wars debut got a good deal of menace out of him and that was even after having him balance on one leg and wield a lightsaber in his spare foot.

Doesn't say much though does he?

It's a pretty safe bet they used CGI because it was fresh for 87, sadly nothing ages faster than the latest thing out especially if you are using it just for show.

The make-up effects, the stop motion etc were a step up on the previous film but the intrusion of the gimmick looked tarty back then and now it just looks awful and spoils an otherwise enjoyable sequel.

Every time I see this thread title I think Kershner didn't really die and he's making his grand re-entrance to society by making a remake of AOTC.

I for one rather like your name. Though when you first showed up my first thoughts were oh great, here comes a PT gusher. The thought that you might be some past troll's sock crossed my mind as well. You turned out to be a pleasant surprise and a lot of fun though.
