The French pre-THX discs came from a very poor master, apparently. There was a brief discussion in Citizen's project thread, starting here.

Someone asked if it was the same case for the German Silver Screen Collection, but this has not yet been answered AFAIK.

The German set cannot be from the same master, as it contains the original German title card and opening crawl.

I'm going to try and grab a German disc off ebay.de and take a look myself.
