More Old Republic game

So much better than anything in the prequels.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

The force is a more effective concept when it is subtle, but I suppose this is as good as Star Wars can get in the 21st century.

God, I am sick of the bad guys starships always looking like Star Destroyers.

Havne't seen it yet (firewall at work) but can I assume it's awesome and badass with lots of stabbings and harsh lighting?

Yep. And it has a cowboy!

Like I said, this is the best we can hope for these days. Kind of sad isn't it?

Somebody needs to tell Bioware that the Star Wars films and The Matrix films are seperate series.

I refuse to click the link. The Star Wars Dork Age is now, the Dork Age Sith suck, and I hate the Dork Age.

Author

Well it's thousands of years in the past, but there are Stormtrooper characters, droidekas (had to look that up), a rogue character with a Millenium Falcon looking ship, and so many other blatant formulaic ripoffs so as to make your head spin. Despite being more bastardization of Star Wars, it looks like a fun game. I'm not too picky about artistic license in video games but I do wish creators could be more...creative.

The last big TOR trailer had a girl-Boba Fett, a fake Darth Vader, and a thousand generic Darth Maul types, and the fan world gave a similar 'this is what the PT should have been' response... so maybe deep down we hate originality.

It's pretty much the PT with better direction, better narrative pull and more convincing facial expressions.

It's still a bit silly how the thousands of years before ANH the galaxy is full of tougher starfleets than Palpatine could command.

Was the Old Republic actually some sort of galactic technological dark age?

I echo most of your sentiments.   The spaceship stuff is cool- straight outta RotJ.  The design is neat.  Doesn't really fit with 4000 years before the OT, but whatever.

Continuity sucks.  Lightsabre battles are too choreographed.  Very derivitive of what we've already seen... but more classic Star Wars moments in 6 minutes than in the PT's six hours.

Has the EU done the blatant space cowboy thing before? That outlaw-type looks like he belongs in Firefly.

Other than Han Solo?

Honestly, I thought it was Cad Bane at first.  And I don't even watch that show.

I agree with a lot of what's in this thread. When I saw the troopers pulling out over-sized gatling guns, the Jedi and Sith having massively choreographed fights and all the little derivative bits and bobs littered throughout, I couldn't help but feel disinterested.

Having said that, I will say that even this meagre offering has more wit, character and drama than the whole of the prequels. The "just inspecting the troops" quip from the stock rogue character as he checked out that Twi'lek's butt gave me a smirk, the Sith - even if it is gratuitous - are certainly villainous, unlike the prequels villains, and the idea of Korriban - an ancient planet with ties to some extinct demonic civilisation - is pretty neat.

I guess. The great thing about Han is that he may have acted the outlaw/gunslinger part, but nobody in 1977 was foolish enough to put him in a duster and chupalla. This guy's outfit is just too on-the-nose Old West.

Agreed.  That's my biggest complaint about Firefly.  Just takes the Old West motif too far for my tastes.

Whereas I thought it worked great for Firefly considering they're the descendants of earthlings (meaning they actually have cows, horses, and the Old West in their history), and it made some sense that settlers on the border planets would be poor and forced into a subsistence lifestyle, having to raise their meat and get around without the benefit of vehicles. Plus there's the whole twist on the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. History repeating itself, and all that

i think that's the same voice actor that does Bender doing the smuggler cowboy.

anyway prequel light saber fights, star destroyers, battle droids, tie fighters, the millennium falcon! and a Star Trek space station. nothing original.

I cannot believe that for once i agree with you, lol.

Old Republic as an extension of Kotor is welcome to me.  I only wish it was a single person game and not an mmo.

I am hoping they are keeping George as far away from this as possible, he ruined the force unleashed with his nonsense and he also did so to the clone wars cartoons.

Watched the trailer that Clint Eastwood like smuggler character is badass, reminds me of a fistful of dollars if it was a sci fi movie with bulletime like the matrix.

He looks kind of like the man with no name, but also resembles a Han Solo or Dash Rendar type.

Indeed, SkyJedi... except for the Clone Wars part, I do still like that...

I mean, here we have a forum dedicated to talking about how the prequels should have been more like the original trilogy, and then this comes along and it's too much like the original trilogy? Whaaaat?

Can nobody do anything right anymore as it pertains to Star Wars? This TOR cinematic stuff from Blur is about the most amazing, most Star Warsy stuff I've seen in a long time. This combat during these trailers literally have me holding my breath, which is something I hardly ever do. Sure it's flash, but they can make me care more about the characters in the cinematic in ten minutes than I ever care about most characters in most movies. And yet it's being picked apart here like it's some kind of atrocity. Where does it end? When can something Star Wars that isn't the OT be appreciated because it's an awesome piece of work? Like I said before, it's now to the point where the fault with it is that it's too much like the OT. I mean, come on. =P You say that stuff in the trailer is obviously ripped from the films, but everyone here also knows that parts of those films we all love were ripped from other films and books and that's part of what made Star Wars great and the same applies here.

I think they're doing fantastic work that's a complete credit to Star Wars, and I think it's getting a bad wrap here for no reason. This is some seriously great stuff coming from Bioware and Blur that makes Star Wars look good and combines the energy and excitement of the PT with the characters and depth of the OT, and I think we should all be glad for that.

But that's just a certain point of view.

In response to sky and Tyr, the problem is not that it is too much like the OT or that it does not look exciting or well done. It has some literally superficial resemblance to the OT (Stormtrooper, Millenium Falcon, etc) so that it feels almost mocking of the OT. Now while the lightsaber duels in the OT are exciting...please don't tell me that the duels in this video game are similar to those duels. This game is more Star-Warsy in context of the EU/PT than the OT.

I would like to play this game. I would like to play this game because it looks exciting and takes place in the Star Wars universe. As a video game, I don't mind all manner of artistic license and I appreciate the game in its own right. I don't take issue with the choreographed fights because it is a video game.

What feels off to me is that this is thousands of years ago...and there is the Han Solo with the Millenium Falcon commenting on the lacking appearance but great stamina of the ship, etc. It is a legitimate critique of the lack of creativity. There is a difference from borrowing from other sources and borrowing so blatantly from the same source.

So, yes, as a video game and ignoring the almost mocking ripoffs of the OT, zomg this looks like fun and it's Star Wars!!! But it's not Star Wars because of the ripoffs. It's because there are Jedi, aliens, planets and droids. The story will no doubt be good with engaging characters.

The blue elephant in the room.

Finally got to watch this. I kinda liked it.

Compared to the other TOR trailer, it seemed less needlessly 'uber-bad-ass.' Yeah it had a dual-lightsaber and a couple Darth Mauls fighting super-Matrix style, but I can ignore that. Frankly "Jedi/Sith" is the least interesting part of the EU mythos to me.

I really liked seeing the cowboy. The EU needs more of that, and I didn't think his costume was too much more 'on the nose' than anything Han wore. (except making me ask why you'd need a hat in space?)

I wish this wasn't an MMORPG, because then I'd play it.

A lot of Star Wars fans just want a repeat of the original trilogy. Nothing great ever came from imitation. Remember how much hate the Jedi uniforms in KOTOR got? I actually liked the fact that they weren't wearing the "traditional" robes - which of course were just desert apparel.

Off-topic tangent; I really like the idea of armour for Jedi, as it fits in with the whole "knight" thing. One of the mistakes in ESB was changing the conception of Jedi from adventurous, heroic, galactic special forces to warrior monks - it set the stage for the horrible depiction of Jedi we were subjected to in the prequels.

For those bemoaning the fact that this isn't a single player game...

I'm relatively sure you can play it like one.  If you never want to talk to/interact with a real person... I don't think you have to.
