Gentlemen Broncos

A weird film that shares Napoleon Dynamite's fascination with rural America and the humorless oddballs that supposedly live there. I liked it in places, specifically the science fiction scenes with Sam Rockwell, who's one of my favorites. Mostly, it felt like a retread of the same uncomfortable humor from Napoleon Dynamite.

5/10 boules.

Gentlemen Brocos- Just the Sam Rockwell Bits- 10b/10b

The other bits- 3b/10b.

That's my opinion.  If you agree come over here and blow on this friendship rock with me.  Puwh, puwh, puwh.

LOL. The Rockwell scenes were awesome. I rewatched all of them yesterday, in fact. Not just for Sam's incredible ability to play serious and slapstick in the same breath, but also I love the cinematography and special effects in those scenes. Sam Rockwell playing a transsexual Edgar Winter-like "yeast lord" was pretty awesome too.

"I can smell a cache of yeast cakes forty mile off!"

Whisper of the Heart

As a Hayao Miyazaki fan, I felt obliged to watch this, since he directed a few fantasy scenes in this otherwise trite teen romance. I guess I thought it would comprise more than 90 seconds of screentime. I didn't hate it. There were a few good moments, some nice animation. I especially love the way Studio Ghibli animates the countryside.

Four out of a possible seven judgment balls.

Thank god back to the future has not been Lucasized, and Spielberg has revealed Jaws won't be either.  Imagine replacing the Delorean with a bad cgi one, or the jaws model with a cgi shark.

Trust me, they wouldn't do that to the Delorean.

Instead, they would think it was too old a car, and replace it with an all new 2010 Chevy Impala!

I also agree about the language in Back to the Future, it pushes the age for viewing up a little bit for me. Eight is a pretty good age. A lot of 80s flicks have swearing that sometimes pulls you out of the movie because it it so obviously there just for the sake of it.

I don't recommend Telltale's Back to the Future game for young children either. You basically lie, deceive and manipulate people including your friends and family to achieve the goals :P

Watched the original 'X-men' for the first time in years.

Pretty good character stuff. Bad action. I didn't get invested in the characters nearly as much as in 'first class'. But still a decent movie.

It's true, and this was a concern for me as well.  I watched this a tonne at more or less the same age and got in trouble for quoting "Let's see if these ba*ds can do 90!" because I hadn't heard the word before.  And I likewise learned "OMG!" from Superman.
I learned "bastards" from Star Trek III.

"You Klingon bastards, you killed my son."

I wondered why they changed it. Then I realized that it must be a bad word.

Which was just as well, because Amazon had the [BTTF] BD set for $25 yesterday and I ordered it.  So we can watch 2 and 3 a la mode (from the French, meaning "covered in ice cream").

Erp.  Target has the set for $19.99.  Is there something I don't know about this set?

Oh well, I just have to keep telling myself that I saved money because $19.99 with tax is like $60 or something.

But anyone else sitting on the fence waiting to upgrade to BTTF BD... go go go!

The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Incredible. Alec Guiness is one of the most amazing actors of all time and is VERY underrated.

Really, you can ignore all the Xmen films that came before and pretend this is the first. It's almost like a reboot ala Star Trek 2009.

As it stands it is a better movie than all of the others. There are some slight inconsistencies but also a few nods and winks to the other films.

Agreed. I loved it. I liked the first X-Men film quite a bit actually; the second one was okayish but also kind of awful; the third was just plain awful, though I really liked the cast in all of them.

But this new one was really good. Though to be honest, I didn't feel some characters were casted as well, and I kind of hated how the end sets up all the pieces neatly so we can flash forward many years to the first X-Men film. Wouldn't have hurt to leave room for sequels.

I did like how they mostly kept continuity with the originals too. It was like a reboot, only with 50 times the continuity as Star Wars and its prequels.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Such a funny and surprisingly poignant mockumentary that continually wowed me with its camera trickery. Why are films made since so bad at splicing actors into old footage and photographs? The techniques used  in this film were downright eerie and so seamless that I got to wondering if future generations who don't know Woody Allen could be convinced this is a true story.

I have yet to get the Blu-ray. Can't wait to see it in the actual 2.55:1!

Casino. (on LD for kicks) 3.75 balls out of 4 balls in a vice operated by Joe Pesci. I just enjoy sinking into this movie. To me it obliterates Goodfellas.

X Men First Class: Best of the bunch, IMHO

I also watched 'The Mouse That Roared", with Peter Sellers, for the first time. A fun little spoof for Sellers fans. Sort of a different 'Dr. Strangelove'. 3 out of 4 balls (for Sellers fans)  I wish the Monte Python gang had made this movie between HG and LOB.

Super 8.

Balls 4.

trying to stay spoilersafe but i'll say this - throughout the movie a group of friends are making a super 8 film to enter into a contest. stick around during the end credits to see this film - i'm sure it had a name but i can't recall.

That's one part of the plot - the other is the mysterious stuff hinted at in the trailers so I wont talk about that yet.

What I liked -

I was really impressed with the kids in the movie.

What I disliked -

the lens flares. oh god. the lens flares.

all in all a fun movie and i'll definitely want to see it again. It's mostly pretty serious but there are some laugh out loud moments from time to time.

While it has an old style like early Spielberg films I think I enjoyed it a lot more than i have those [E.T. et al.]

not sure how i feel about the plot over all but I certainly had a good time watching it.

So the excuse that things were constantly happening off screen in Star Trek was an asspull, since Super 8 is hardly a busy starship? ;-)
