For now, I'll probably go this route after I finish Mos Eisley;

Tales From the New Republic
Heir to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command
Specter of the Past
Vision of the Future
Survivor's Quest
Allegiance
Death Star
The Paradise Snare
The Hutt Gambit
Rebel Dawn

The order is certainly subject to change once I get going. I may not dig some of them.

*edit*

In fact, I start an A.C. Crispin story tonight.  I'll get a feel for her style.

I actually remember there being a big chunk of one of the books where Han is gone so the story follows Lando for a little while, whilst Han is off in Corporate Sector. Though it might be shorter than I remember. =P

As for the Dark Times, it's not strictly off-limits, there is actually a comic set in that time period with that very title. It's actually my favorite Star Wars comic series. I'd highly recommend it.

As for anything else Star Wars related Anchorhead might like to check out, I'd recommend the daily newspaper strips that started back in '79. You can find them by clicking on my sig. It starts off pretty good, then the main writer and illustrated had to leave due to illness and it gets a little iffy for a couple stories and then BAM it becomes fantastic.

I still miss Al Williamson and Archie Goodwin.

Archie as an editor of the Marvel series get very little credit these days. though he was a big contributor to the EU.

Huh? Han had the Falcon in the Daley trilogy.

I think he meant it accounts for the daley trilogy and that he wins the falcon in the han solo trilogy.

been a while since i read han solo trilogy (the non daley one), but its always been my favorite EU work. I have the trilogy in a single hardback copy. I remember it having both in it, pretty sure the part of how he won the falcon had to be before the bit where he is off in the corporate sector. I think it even mentions some bits from that storyline, but nothing major.

I started the first Daley book, didnt really get into it, might need to try and pick it back up.

Anchor, you may not want to read New Repbulic before you read Heir, as NR has Zahn short stories featuring characters from Heir.

The anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire is coming when ?

I know there is an unabridged audio-recording on CD being read by Marc Thompson coming out a bit later than the hardback.

Del Rey claims sales figures will be figured into whether or not they reprint Dark Force Rising or the Last Command as special annotated hardback editions, or full unabridged audio recordings.

Kind of sad though that the abridged recordings from audio-cassette are not being reissued on CD, the first one read by Wedge Antilles Dennis Lawson, and the other 2 read by C-3PO or Anthony "tony" Daniels.

Zhan's Thrawn trilogy is probably the only real classic of post-1990 EU. For me, it was the one series of novels that had the Star Wars feel, while also expanding on it. This guy got Star Wars. The characters behave as they should, while also being taken in new directions, the story seems like a logical extension of the films and is told in an interesting way, and there is a very human emotional core to the story. As a ten year old, I found it a bit boring in parts but I appreciate it a lot, lot more today.

Anchorhead, if you want to check out EU you have to start with the Thrawn trilogy. It created and defined the EU for a decade, and there's a reason why many people wished Lucas filmed these as the sequel trilogy. I don't want to oversell the books, because they have their flaws, but they are pretty darned good in my opinion. I would also pick up the graphic novel of Dark Empire. The earlier EU was always really good, probably because they could write unrestrained, they created the continuity that boxed in later writers, which is why now it is difficult to write captivating material. Lucas solved this with his Clon Wars cartoon by simply ignoring the EU, and in many cases contradicting it.

Yeah, I have another short story collection listed as my next EU, but I'll probably go right to Heir Of The Empire.  Might as well jump in where you guys recommend.  I've heard great things about the Thrawn trilogy, so I'm looking forward to it.

Just saw DoubleO's post.  Another good reason to go straight to Heir.

Play It Again, Figrin D'an: The Tale of Muftak and Kabe,  by A. C. Crispin

Less interesting at first, especially following Hammertong, but it picked up as it went.  I was much more interested toward the end and really did want to find out what happened to them.  This is another one that intersects the day in the cantina and then goes beyond it.  In fact, it's that after the cantina part of the story that I found most interesting.

The biggest flaw, IIRC, was that there was a distinct lack of humour. Otherwise; good stuff.

Maybe their best achievement was having excellent antagonists who weren't Sith!

Review 5

The Sand Tender: The Hammerhead's Tale,  by Dave Wolverton

This was a weird one.  Nice job of paralleling the events surrounding the cantina, Han, and the droids, but man it's out there lead character-wise. Interesting enough and like Play It Again, it picks up speed as it goes.  In fact, it also intersects that story, which I though gave it an interesting depth. Nadon knows several of the regulars at the cantina, so it fleshes out Mos Eisley a little more than some of the others.

The Dark Times intrigues me now. Is it forbidden because no author alive is capable of believably transforming the PT's whiny bitch Vader into hardcore OT Vader? But seriously, it's because it's mostly killing off good guys right?

Are you talking about of between Episode III and Now what is called Episode IV but what i call Star Wars ?

The reason that is forbidden is because that is the era Lucas is doing the live action series.

Not exclusively forbidden if you count the dark times comics, that other Vader comic that just ended, force unleashed, and dark lord novel the rise of Darth Vader.

But stuff they have not been allowed to to do is what now.  They established the rebellion twice once not counted because it was a deleted scene in revenge of the sith, and the second time on force unleashed.

I refuse to call Star Wars Episode IV also ;)

So the live action series is still going ahead? I thought they must have canned it.

It's currently on a indefinite hold for the time being. They have a ton of scripts done but now George is having the company work on figuring out how to bring production costs down as low as possible. He basically wants every episode to feel like a big budget production on a manageable television scale budget.
