They still make PS3s with PS2 combatibility? I had no idea? And how does one get a $100 coupon for anything?

I knew they still had limited compatibility, I just didn't realize it covered so many of the games that it does. The earliest models came with a PS2 chip build into them, which from what I understand, allowed them complete PS2 backwards compatibility. The new models only feature limited backwards compatibility, like the 360 has with Xbox games. Sony has a list of the games that are backwards compatible but it is really short.

As for how do you get a $100 off coupon for anything, it just came in my usual Gamestop Rewards emails. Had a hard time believing it, that is quite a price cut. A few searches on the web seemed to indicate that it was only sent out to Rewards members who had no PS3 game purchases recorded on their accounts.

I actually anticipate that there is a full retail price cut for the PS3s near on the horizon. Either that or Gamestop was just really over stocked on the things and figured they could stand to take a hit on a certain percentage of consoles with the anticipation of recovering it in game sales. It is true, I buy most my games there for the Xbox, and if I decide to keep the PS3, I'll probably buy most my PS3 games there as well.

You and the GF should try the demo for LBP.  It's a lot of fun in local MP.  I bought two wired controllers on Woot for $5 each so we have 4 controllers.

I have Resistance, and I just can't seem to get into it.  I bought this controller, which helps...

http://www.amazon.com/Shadow-6-Wireless-Controller-Playstation-3/dp/B002ISZB2O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1306734119&sr=8-2

But sometimes you can't change shoot to the "actual" triggers... you're stuck with the "bumpers".  Which is the case for the Uncharted games.  They're decent, and worth playing.  Nothing I would have bought the console for, but as long as you have it.

Probably the best exclusive to me was inFamous.  Maybe not your type of game (maybe it is) but I liked it.

Let us know if you keep it.

EDIT: Best part is that when the PSN store comes back online, you might be eligible to get 2 free games.  2 of which are LBP and inFamous.

The PS2 "chip" was a red laser I think. Early models had red and blue lasers but then they shafted the red to effect a retail price drop. The blue laser can read PS3 and most PSX games but you need red for PS2. I'm not 100% on this but that's how a Sony employee explained it to me.

It would have to have a red laser to read DVDs, which it does. The PS3 use to have the PS2 hardware inside, if I remember right. I can see that being expensive for Sony.

On the back of the PS3 box in my living room it says, "Limited backwards compatibility". It is probably just referring to the ability to play PSX games though.

Sony has made so many various models of the PS3 with such a wide variance of hardware and capabilities, it is really hard to keep up with them all. If the list I looked at was a list for the so-called "backwards compatible" PS3s, then it seems that even when they contained the PS2 hardware inside of them the compatibility was pretty limited.

Sadly the PSX compatibility is just meh. Sure, my games work, but it's piss poor at reading them! Tekken 3 and Soulblade frequently decide the music isn't worth playing because it skips once or twice... and those would be the two of my PS1 collection I'd be most likely to play.

Sounds like I still need to invest in a good wireless controller for my PS2 then. Any suggestions? I hate third party controllers in general, but even the "official" wireless PS2 controller, which was only sold for a little while and is unreasonably hard to find, was a licensed third-party controller.

Might be worth noting that an 8-year-old owned those games. I'm on Soulblade #2, I screwed up the first copy so bad. But my pS2 had no problems playing them the last time I tried.

So, as I browse the PS3 library for interesting titles, for the first time I realize: If you are a first-person fan, buy a 360. If you are a third-person fan, PS3 all the way.

Killzone 2 and Resistance and Resistance 2 are still the only two games that really interest me.

I looked a little bit at Uncharted, and am not really sure if it is the sort of game I'd get into (I might still need to give it a chance though, but it looks very Tomb Raidery). I looked at Infamous and, while it looks really cool, I know it isn't the sort of game I'd get into.

Tried to give IGN's most recent Top 25 PS3 games list a shot to get ideas... but they kept talking about how certain games brought tears to their eyes, or how other games really moved them. Couldn't really take them seriously. I've never read a more over the top feature with such exaggerated emotion from IGN before, and I read IGN constantly. Not to mention, half the list (the ones that didn't draw tears) were games I already own on the 360.

Uncharted was my favorite game when I had a ps3. (I slammed it with my door almost 2 years ago and never got it fixed.)

Can you fix something like that?

Sooo, all these cool PS3 features I'd like to play around with... but... yeah, everything is still offline...

Resistance looks like a PS2 game, didn't see that one coming. I knew it was an early release title for the system, but wow. I think some of my PS2 games actually looked prettier than that. The infected are so cartoony as to be comical. Definitely not the best pick to be currently my one and only PS3 game. :(

Maybe I'll take it back and grab Killzone 2 instead.

Been playing more Resistance. Really getting into it now, kind of like a really watered down Half-Life. Strips the FPS genre down to its core (or takes it back in time ten years) very straight forward shoot and be shot at, but I really appreciate the storyline. Almost to the infamous Manchester Cathedral part.

 RTS?  Surely you mean FPS?

How long did it take you to get into it?  I've given it maybe 3 hours and it never hooked me.

First: Woohoo! DarkSiders 2!  Looking good!

Cover-full.jpg

Next:

The Mrs. and I finished Monkey Island 2:SE last night.  I was hoping she'd have more of a reaction to the ending... but she took it in stride.  I guess Monkey Island is pretty whacky to start with...

Did anyone play this with the commentary?  I would really like to listen to it, but it's the sort of thing I'd rather listen to in my car on my drive to work than give my valuable xbox time to.  I tried to find clips of it on youtube, but was unsuccessful.

I did find some interesting videos on the subject though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-CTx-S9f-8 - Benny Hill inspired alternate ending to MI:2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bInZ7_y4Lw - Monkey Island 2 sets recreated in CryEngine.

We have 2 many creepy baby dolls now.

Seriously, why did they think that would make people want to buy a video game system?

I might not play video games, but I get to see most of the commercials because I watch a lot of ESPN, and apparently a lot of people like both sports and video games.

Sounds like something kids are doing these days.

And I do vaguely recall that video.  Weird as hell...
