Doctor Who — Page 8

For me the only mehish episode so far has been the pirate one and that was nowhere near as bad as many of the RTD ones.

On the whole I find the quality of stories to be greatly improved and it's certainly full of squeeky trouser moments.

Agreed. I loved how disorienting the first two Series 6 episodes were and the great series arc they set up, though I could do without the annoying introductory voiceovers from Amy when shown in the US.

(SPOILERS): The Rory death card has been played WAY TOO MANY TIMES... I also thought it was very awkward about how they waited until the final few minutes to remind the audience about the Doctor's impending "death." (END SPOILER)

and that was nowhere near as bad as many of the RTD ones.

Found some of those bad as well... especially cheesy by Series 4...

SPOILERS BELOW:

I really like Neil Gaiman. American Gods was one of the most enjoyable reads I've experienced in a while and his children's books are absolutely fantastic. I did really enjoy his episode for the most part, but the idea of the TARDIS's soul going into a human struck me as kind of silly. I think that episode written by anyone but Gaiman could have been really awful.

Is it just me, or is this season missing some of the energy, some of the frizzle and sizzle of last year?

It no longer has the shock of the new (new Doctor, new head writer, new companions, new Tardis, filming in HD so new texture and look, many new writers).

It has even shed most of the few things about the RTD era that the previous series hung onto.

If you go back and watch even a later David Tennant show for the most part they seem very very different (which is good because this is what the show has done since 1963).

It's certainly turned into a darker, uncomfortable less obvious place for telling it's stories.

It has a different energy to it (more Sapphire And Steel than Buffy The Vampire Slayer).

It's also nice not to have a clue were the general thrust of the story is going and not having tabloids putting shots of the finale on the front page months in advance so you can't avoid it even if you want to.

That's true, it is nice that the 'papers aren't doing that any more, but a lot of what's been happening in this series seems like a retread of plots from the last series. Like, when the one-dimensional paranoid violent woman triggered a war with the humans and the "gangers that the Doctor was trying to form a peaceful coexistence with...was that not a blatant retread of what happened with the Silurians last year when the mother of that boy offed the lizard lady and triggered the war?

God damn, I'm bored with Dr.Who this year...even the ones I've enjoyed have still been a bit boring.

It's like...enjoying your fave food but it's a fave food you've had so many times lately that it's getting monotonous. I wish they'd expand the show to some stuff they haven't already done variants on in the last couple of years.

Seeing as I can't stand what they did to the Silurians last year the similarity (which is two details deep) makes me prone to switch this iteration of the theme as the default one.

The one thing that is more irksome with this story is how Odoish the Ganger Doctor is.

Sure it's a similar idea (a living liquid taking on the shape of other people) and the other Gangers in mid shift look much less like Odo, I guess it must be Matt's bone structure under the latex.

Maybe this was deliberate, "Is that a Star Trek mask?" was prominently asked in the first episode.

It was weird to hear a Bad Wolf reference after all these years.

This episode was pretty damn boring.  And sure as hell didn't deserve to be a two-parter.  Why waste two entire episodes on such a weak premise that's already been mined previously?  The point of a cliffhanger like that is supposed to be to get you excited for what happens next, but in this case I don't even care--it's just that 'meh'.

Also, I can't stand the way they've been doing the lighting lately.  Everything is so damn dark and dull, you can't see what's going on half the time.  And the mixes are really burying the dialogue behind the music and sound effects: combine that with the fast-paced and strange nature of the speech, and even for someone with a good ear such as myself just the basic act of deciphering what is being said is quite difficult.

Overall, not very pleased with the way things are going, in either storytelling or technical quality.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I'm really enjoying it at the moment, it's a shame it's not everyone's cup of tea but give it a couple of years and someone else is bound to take over and make it awful for me and wonderful for somebody else again.

Wow, I'm shocked that anyone disliked The Rebel Flesh.  I thought it was absolutely fantastic.  It reminded me a lot of classic Who, and the Gangers are awesomely creepy.

I don't know what all of you naysayers are expecting from the show this season, but all I can say is that every one of my expectations has been exceeded by a wide margin (with the exception of the rather average Curse of the Black Spot).

Though I have to say, I'm getting a little irked at Moffat's reliance on story arcs.  Sure, RTD had them, but I can't recall anyone bitching about "filler" episodes during the Tennant years.  I mean, come on, Doctor Who has been "filler" for forty years!  Now we can't take a break from the main arc without people bitching about the show being boring and not giving us "answers" - it's like Lost fans all over again!

Rant over, sorry 'bout that.

I don't mind the show having story arcs, that's one of the reasons why I like the old series so much. I just wish that the stories weren't so boring, Doctor Who is about exploring and adventure and time travel and stuff and while all that stuff is there, it isn't really at the forefront...

Also, I really wish they'd sort out the sound mix for the series. I can barely hear anything sometimes.

I didn't say it was boring because it wasn't about the main plot for the year.  It was just a really dull and tedious episode--and being a two-parter means that the next is sure to be just as bad.

And for the love of Jebus, will they get off the fuggin' Earth and go see other places and other times?  Only about 10% of the episodes actually bother to do that.  For a show with such a huge potential, having a vehicle that can literally go anywhere, anywhen, they sure haven't been making use of it.  In the old show they did that all the time!  And many of the companions weren't even from here at all, or were from other eras of history.  But no, we have to keep seeing present day Earth over and over again, even though it's a completely boring place to be in a science fiction premise.  Blah.

That was one of the only things I liked about 'The Doctor's Wife'. I liked that it took place far away from earth in deep space.

It felt a bit more Original Series than usual

Absolutely, between that and seeing more of the TARDIS interior it felt positively retro.

It's a pity they had such a crap design for the tardis corridors. The thing looked positively ghastly.

Unlike sky, I'm allowed to complain about Doctor Who. Because, overall, I like it.

Well, that episode was better than the last one. Twist ending was obvious though. And it got really stupid towards the ending. And who'd have guessed the Lazarus creature would make a guest appearance!!

There was a little bit of padding and it might have been stronger if two of the male characters had been merged into one but it was generally in keeping with the quality of the series so far.

The CGI wasn't anywhere near as CGIish as in The Lazarus Experiment (I actually thought they had mapped a CGI face onto a rod puppet at one point). There was a nice use of distortion, soft focus and quick cutaway to obscure the potential excess inherent in the design (I wish they had pulled back that far in the first part with the snake head and the head rotating scenes).

The end, ending, coda thing had a really horrible Cronenbergian feel to it.

The only good thing about it was hearing Tom Baker's voice, because it reminded me of when Doctor Who was good.

Ah screw it. I'm fed up with nuWho now. I'm gonna bail it's too much of a chore to watch now.. You can call me the 'Anchorhead' of Doctor Who if you like.

Haha such whingeing. I'm still wondering why Rory's ID issue date is 30/11/1990. They better get around to explaining that this season.

It does seem odd for Moff to hope we will notice lots of little micro-details and then blame that on a 'mistake'.

After the jacketed Doctor scene in Flesh And Stone anything that looks like a continuity error is possibly a clue to a twist.

I assumed that was Tom Baker's voice. Having never seen the older Who series, to my ears it sounded like a really atrocious old sound clip thrown in. I appreciate what they were trying to do, and that it was a bit of wanking intended to pleasure old fans, but it still sounded horrible.

Didn't enjoy the episode as a whole that much, but the ending makes me hopeful for more exciting things to come.
