What are your favorite OT documentaries? — Page 2

I drank up the PBS docs. More recently, 'Empire Of Dreams' was enjoyable and I appreciated my PT bonus discs very much. 'Beneath The Dome' was a howl.

I actually own Beneath the Dome on DVD.

Never remember buying it. (looks over shoulder suspiciously)

My favourite ones are the original making of's (making of star wars, SP-FX, Classic creatures & from star wars to jedi) and of course Jambe Davdar's Star wars docs trilogy.  I wasn't over keen on Empire of dreams. One thing i hate about these new style docs that seem to be the norm nowadays is all the useless chatter from people who had absolutely nothing to do with the movie, or ones that is just some talking heads with a few clips from the movie with no behind the scenes material at all.

I agree with the classic docs + I also really like watching the films with the audio commentary (Ady's AVCHDs are great for that, because they at least have good colours and some of the worst SE changes are removed).

Yes! I HATE that! I wish they would stop asking Lisa Kudrow and the lead singer of Maroon5 for their insipid opinions. The lack of those is something the older docs have going for them.

Lisa Kudrow talks about Star Wars?

OMG!!!

*runs out to buy new doc*

Do Ady's AVCHDs have audio commentary? I didn't realize.

His ANH AVCHD has the commentary that was on starwars.com for a while and it's really good.  I didn't think the other two AVCHDs had any because he couldn't find their companions.

Ady's ANH AVCHD has the commentary already mentioned by Frink and both ANH and ESB have the official 2004 DVD commentary.

Yeah but who cares about those? :P

(other than Kersh's stuff on ESB, of course)

Well, I enjoy them, sue me! ;-)

Carrie Fisher is funny and Ben Burt has some interesting stuff to say sometimes and even George.

I wonder how many people actually popped their DVD's in the PC to listen to those.  Who was heard from on that commentary?

Did AMC ever do any OT specific documentaries? (American Movie Classics channel for the acronym impaired.) I saw one they did for the original Predator movie that was quite different from what's on the DVD...

Where were you in '77?

I did back in 2004 but I don't really remember any of it.

My favourite documentary is OCP's Deleted Magic. Bar none, one of the most fascinating behind-the-scenes documents I've ever witnessed. Jambe's sort-of unofficial follow ups are pretty good too, and I still haven't seen his SW one, but for me Deleted Magic really made me see my favourite film in a new way, and had a lot of footage I had never seen before.

From Star Wars to Jedi is easily the best of the official OT docs. I'll admit I really like Empire of Dreams, but mainly for the never-before-seen clips. The doc itself is quite fluffy since it has to cover 3 films in like 2 hours and shys away from anything non-promotional, but some of the footage is extremely interesting. I haven't seen Classic Creatures in quite some time, but I remember it being quite interesting (and amusing!) but unfortunately ROTJ doesn't interest me so much. I wish there was a good ESB doc--the lost Michael Parbot doc seems so amazing because the clips from it outshine anything ever officially released at any time for any SW film. Its like the equivalent of TPM's "The Beginning", except for a film worth (re)watching.

You just had to go and make me aware of this documentary, only to find out that Darth Neo refuses to release his copy of it. I've always had trouble letting go of things I want which are unattainable, and now I have something else to covet. Thanks. ;-)

I've got it. It's a shitty VHS-rip with dutch subtitles but I have it. Do you want links?

^ starwarsarchives.com -> timeline -> 1980 -> Lost Making Of Doc.

It's only the first third or so of the Parbot doc.

That's possible. It's only like 15mins long. But it has a lot of cool stuff in it, I just wish it was better quality.

Thanks Harmy. :) That's the Dutch TV edit. I did find that, haven't watched it yet though. Almost don't want to, so I don't know what I'm missing. From what I understand, Darth Neo has a copy of the complete documentary that he's been sworn not to release.

Yeah, I googled it and it's really easy to find the dutch version. I'd love to see a longer version, seems really good.

Thanks for the great responses. I haven't seen Empire of Dreams, but then I never bought the 2004 DVD set.

I'm glad to see most of the documentaries you guys have mentioned are included on RowMan's laserdisc set.

My favorite is The Making of the Empire Strikes Back. But nobody can find it nowadays. When I was a kid I wore that tape out!

Is this the one you're talking about? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqzfTD2ZGpM

No, thats the SPFX one. The one I'm talking about has all but disappeared.

What are considered the essential OT documentaries and extras, whether fan-made or official releases?

I have only seen  Empire of Dreams + other 2004 material, From Star Wars to Jedi (ages ago) and the Holiday Special :(

I have heard of Jambe's documentaries, Deleted Magic, The Dr. Gonzo Extras and RowMan's discs, but I don't know much more than that they exist. What goodies do these contain and which are the best? Any others I've missed?

*WOW! Chuck Norris thread merge complete. Thanks Moth3r. Sorry for being a moron.*
