Info Wanted: Making Of Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back SPFX/Return Of The Jedi Classic Creatures laserdisc rips - the quality of them?

These three making of features have all been released on laserdisc, so are there any projects that have converted them to DVD or as separate AVIs for instance?

Thanks.

EDIT: I know about the Rowman 4 disc box and the Building Empire and Returning To Jedi fan documentaries, how do these compare quality-wise? Do they use the laserdisc or VHS rips as a basis for the original making of features?

Which one of these has the best image quality?

Rowman's definitely use the laserdiscs.  The quality of both is absolutely fine. As a fan, you'll want both anyway and you won't be disappointed with the quality of any of those releases.

Okay, I'm downloading both ESB Rowman and Building Empire, see how they compare.

Hopefully when Lucas does release Star Wars on Bluray, they'll have the Making Of Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back SPFX/Return Of The Jedi Classic Creatures/From Star Wars to Jedi docus on them, and hopefully in better quality :)

I hope you enjoy them!  :-)

Bear in mind that Building Empire is compiled from a wide variety of sources, so the quality inevitably varies.  Personally my requirements for picture quality are far less stringent for featurettes and documentaries than for full-blown feature films, so both sets of releases are more than adequate.

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out which laserdiscs have this material. Could you list the versions they are found on? (release dates, or anything that can help?)

Thanks very much!

Thank you! I checked out the Laserdisc Database and saw that what I was looking for was The Making of Star Wars & SPFX Empire Strikes Back catalogue number1112-80, released in 1982. 1052-80 would also work, released in 1981. I found it on eBay and was the winning bid at $35 but then someone swooped in and won it for $66. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled but all I really want to do is get it and put it on DVD.

Have you guys ever used iOffer? I can't really believe that website exists (affiliated with eBay, people sell what amounts to pirated copies of videos.) Anyway, the DVD for sale there from a laserdisc source has Japanese subtitles. Another copy is from VHS. I'm not sure if I can figure out why the bootleggers can't get the source from the USA laserdisc...

What are the odds this special (these specials) will end up on the impending Blu-ray set?

I have my doubts they will be on the Blu Ray, since they're about the original untouched films.

There may also be legal issues with MOSW, as William Conrad's original narration was replaced for the late 1990's VHS release. SPFX also had some movie clips cut out for home video. It also might be expensive to clear all the movie clips in Classic Creatures for a new release.

The original USA Laserdisc pressings are notorious rotters. Only the Japanese discs are watchable today. Classic Creatures and Making of a Saga were only ever released on LD in Japan.

There may be an announcement around here with regards to MOSW and SPFX sometime in the near future. Keep your eyes open. ;)

The absolute best rips i have seen are the editroid, but they come from the japanerse laserdiscs so they have burned in subtitles.  Some other did them from the US laserdiscs and VHS tapes.

But those were never remastered digitally or had digital sound.

Classic Creatures, and From Star Wars to Jedi were only ever released in other territories on Laserdisc.

I have the french release of from star wars to jedi, but it is in pal and i am not sure if its dubbed or burned in french subtitles.  I do know it is analog audio only and from a non remastered source.

The making of star wars, and SPFX were released in pal in the nineties in the UK and those apparently were the last English language releases.

These apparently were also in the executor box set in Europe.

Making of Star Wars and SPFX were released on Betamax in the states as well as CED.  CED would be a bad source, but if you could find some sealed copies without tape rot of the betamax perhaps they would yield a better image than the VHS, i dunno.

Yeah the editdroid ones are the best overall, but yeah they do have the permeant subs. The quality is so nice though that they've never been a problem for me. God I hope they just get some or most of these original making ofs on the bluerays. These and the MIA "Michel Parbot" one done for Empire thats only been teased about in other threads.

Are the editdroid versions available somewhere one might find them to watch?  The only transfer version of these that I have are on 2 discs...2 programs per disc, and I'm not sure which set they're from.

Thanks none...I was just watching my Dr. Gonzo set whilst perusing the forum and seeing the editdroid set mention.  When I checked the link my memory about the thread started coming back out of the fog.

I'll do a search for it and check it out.  It's probably a set I should have for the collection.

Cheers

That description matches a set Gonzo put together from babyhum captures of the Japanese discs

All three are going to be included on the Star Wars Blu-Ray set. Granted, you have to wait until September and have to buy the prequel and altered originals, but if you enjoy them and can wait, they will be released for us soon. That's good news and (almost :D) makes up for no original versions. (I'm happy :) )

It's really too early to cheer. No way to know if all the non-SW clips have been cleared, or if William Conrad's original narration is intact.

Classic Creatures may be stuck in SD resolution even if the other two are remastered. It was finished up on video for some reason.

The fourth documentary, Star Wars to Jedi:The Making of a Saga apparently isn't even included on the Blu Ray set.

Would be nice if someone did a new capture of just From Star Wars to Jedi and put it max bitrate on a single disc DVD.

I remember a couple years ago babyhum was going to do new captures of the documentaries, that obviously never happened.
