What do you LIKE about the EU? — Page 6

And at the risk of getting flamed by at least one previous poster: I'm glad the EU re-appropriated Boba Fett and made him badass again after his lame inclusion and death in Jedi.

I actually really enjoyed the Boba Fett comics (Death, Lies, And Treachery, not sure if any new stuff has been released since then). I liked following the exploits of Boba Fett as kind of private eye with high tech gadgets (think Batman but in it for the money). I know a lot of fans cringe at that kind of stuff, but I really enjoyed it. I liked seeing smaller corners of the SW universe where everything wasn't high stakes, the Force, magical/scientifically explainable powers, and super weapons with the ability to destroy planets.

I also really liked the Dark Horse Droids comic series. Again, seems silly following the adventures of two dumb Droids. But I liked the low stakes smaller corners of the galaxy feel they had two them. The dangers they were in was always really minor things on the grand scale. It was refreshing to see parts of the SW universe that don't really matter and to read about things like pirates capturing a luxury liner, or an arms dealing forcing his robots to build weapons for him.

Sounds very much like my sort of deal.  How would one go about finding all of those?

Is it this series?

Yeah, that looks like it. I bought them issue by issue when they first came out, and years later I bought a trade paperback with the first couple of story arcs in it. Keep in mind, I was around twelve or thirteen when these things were coming out and haven't read them in adulthood so I am not sure if you would like them, of even if I would like them if I only discovered them today, but I found them a lot of fun and my original screen name, C-3PX, was actually the name of one of the characters (a protocol droid reprogrammed to be an assassin).

I have enough love for them that I'd say give them a try, looks like the omnibus can be purchased from amazon for under $5, so you wouldn't have much to lose. While you're at it, if you can get your hands on this one shot comic by Dark Horse called "Tales from Mos Eisley" (doesn't resemble the later EU book of the same name), it is pretty cool. Just a collection of a few random short stories, I loved them because, again, they have nothing to do with the grander scheme of things in the galaxy, just individuals in their own person small plights taking place in the SW universe.

Hey, it's me!

Hehe. That cover was obviously intended to sell comics. He never actually has that over the top badass who is trying too hard look in the comic book. Just a normal looking protocol droid with the x on his head (from being shoddily repaired) and concealed weapons built into his body.

Funny fact, I actually had a portion of that picture I was going to use as my avatar when I originally signed up here (back in '05, I think...) before I discovered the old forum software wouldn't let us upload pictures at that point, so I grabbed that red eyed Ewok pic I used to use.

Looking through a few pages on Amazon, it does seem a little young for me.    With Tales From Mos Eisley on the way, as well as giving Death Star a try, I have more than enough to hold me.  I'll start the Brian Daley Han Solo Adventures again this winter anyway. Toss in the script to the NPR version and my yearly read of Splinter and I have enough Star Wars reading to hold me for quite some time.

Speaking of EU i will be reading Fate of the Jedi Conviction tomorrow, lets see if Aaron Allston does not pen another stinker, the last time he did he had a very good excuse a heart attack, and so the novel was pushed back but also rushed in editing and writing.

Still not as bad as the last Christie Golden installment.  Which was like a teen angst piece of crap.

The last Novel he wrote that was a solid work and i really enjoyed was Solo Command in the X-wing Series, not quite as good as Stackpole.

Gentlemen, fellow OTers,  and ladies of the board...

Today I embark on a journey.  For the first time ever, I will read a Star Wars novel penned after 1979.

Because of this board, my Star Wars world continues to grow.

Because it's an anthology of short stories, I'll post impressions (without spoilers) as I go.

I don't keep on the EU releases, I just grab anything that says "Star Wars" when it shows up on the library's New Release table.

Interestingly my library doesn't have this book yet, at any branch.

The book has only been out for like 3 days.

I finished it and it was neither the worst Star Wars novel i have ever read, nor was it very good, extremely mediocre, many parts felt overly summarized, and the character interactions felt weak and contrived, and it was more boring prequel -esque political nonsense.

Allstons Last and possibly worst entry. Golden's next with Ascension which will also probably be horrible, and then at least Denning can do the action stuff and not be boring if over the top to a ridiculous degree, the last book is called Apocalypse.

Sue Rostoni had made it plain Lucas won't let any of the mains die, so why even bother reading the series if there is no real danger or peril.

In fact the last time i felt the characters to be in any real peril was in the empire strikes back.

A real jumping off point would be to kill all the original characters off or jump the story well beyond their years to the future.

Seems to me they are just filling in the details  for the legacy era comics.

With little or no imagination in the details, a thin and boring skeleton plot.

The EU and Lucas universe are said to be totally different, in EU boba fett is a mandalorian, in Lucas universe he is just a clone of a random bounty hunter who stole a mandalorian's armor.

"No, no!" exclaimed the EUphile, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "George's universe and the EU are one and the same! I can prove it! The Outrider! Coruscant! Double-bladed lightsaber! Well-endowed blue Twi'lek babe! YYYYAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And that poor, sad, pathetic excuse of a man continued to jump through hoops all through the night.

Are action figures considered EU? From the first sentence in the second paragraph below (cardback of POTF2 Boba Fett) I was expecting Attack of the Clones to have Jedi fighting a shitload of Mandalorians in Fett-style armour.

Yeah, so was I and just about every other Star Wars fan I knew at the time. But that would have been extremely cool, and the prequels had this thing about trying hard not to be too cool.

The lightsaber fight at the end of The Phantom Menace set the cap for awesome imagery in the PT. For some reason nothing was ever allowed to surpass it (or come even close to it). An army of Mandalorian warriors fighting Jedi would have (okay fine, potentially could have, if done right) made that amazing scene at the end of TPM look completely underwhelming. Instead, nothing ever even came close to it.

What do I like about the EU?  Anything with Timothy Zahn's name on it.  And nothing bearing the name of Kevin J Anderson.

We Don't Do Weddings: The Band's Tale, by Kathy Tyers

I enjoyed it.  A light, side story adventure following the Cantina band as they decide to play a wedding reception that pays so well they'll be able to book passage off Tatooine. Told first person by one of the band members, it's a humorous insight into the workings of the band for a few days leading up to, but stopping at, an afternoon we're all very familiar with.

I could never see Chewie being an EUphile ... unless he has suicidal tendancies; then it would make sense.

I'm glad you're reviewing them. I really liked that one. I've seen a radio drama version of that story. I need to buy it sometime.

It's on iTunes. Sweet action.

A Hunter's Fate: Greedo's Tale by Tom & Martha Veitch

Enjoyed this one as well.  A more serious story about Greedo and the events leading up to that fateful day.  This story touches on several years of Greedo's life, so we get a little insight into who he is and why he chose the path he did.

Obviously this story had to have a fair amount of Jabba and Solo.  Both are handled well, particularly Han & Chewie.  This story, to me, is a perfect example of Zombie's mention of how these stories expand the Star Wars universe.

One thing I really find interesting about the stories so far is that they end at the cantina scene from Star Wars, yet have little or nothing to do with some of the main characters or story within the film.  Because of that, some of the things that are the main focus of that portion of the film are nothing more than hardly noticed background in these. It's interesting to see those things as a patron of the cantina would have seen them, as opposed to someone directly involved in the incidents.

In addition, I really liked the first wave of EU figures released about 10 years ago.  I still have them, all unopened, in nm condition.  I havent seen them in a long time though for they're in storage.  I think the 1st wave consisted of: Kyle Katarn(from video game), spacetrooper(from comics), darktrooper(from a video game), luke(from dark empire), leia(from dark empire), clone emporor(from dark empire), and grand admiral thrawn from the zahn novels and comics.  Another cool thing is that they were released on a week that toys' r us was running a big sale on SW figs and I got them for 3.99 apiece!

I'm collecting EU figures for my kids (when they're old enough... they're two and negative six months right now).

When you only have the main characters from the movies, there's a limit to how many stories you can play with your figures.

So far I have, Cad Bane, all three Starkillers, Xixor, Thrawn, and Talon Carde. Anything that looks cool I'll grab if I catch it at WallMart
