All the cool new stuff is a slight problem for me. For instance, the pointy TIEs in ROTJ were great, but they caused me to stop and consider that "Hey, they're new, upgraded in just a few months." The green sabre in ROTJ did likewise "Hey, it's green. Why? Oh yeah, he lost it in ESB. I wonder where he got this new one." The multi-colored sabres in AOTC were slightly distracting to me "He's green and he has a green sabre. Mace gets purple. I wonder if it's because he counts for more than all the rest?" These things pull me up from the action a little.
Also, tech upgrades effect the feeling of timelessness created in ANH and ESB. It reduces the sense of consistency, as well. There were only two types of large ships seen in ANH, yet I still had a strong notion of a galaxy filled with many different sorts of great vessels.
Less is more, IMHO. I'd be inclined to go with just one type of ST armor. I'd be inclined to go with the simple bad guys-red and good guys-blue (just watch the camera angles against a blue sky;) Maybe drop some expo about how a Jedi must use the force to bring the sabre to full power. When a lightsider empowers the blade, it's blue and a darksider red ;/
Could concentrate on making the X-wing seem as "cool" as possible for the kids. Maybe the extra special X could sell almost a much as the regular Xs,Es,and As combined.
ANH is the diamond standard. Any of the other films that come closest to perfect consistency with it's successful qualities might sell more tickets. :)
