Also, how's it looking with the subs? It would be good to get them sometime in the next two days, because it will take some time to apply to the video and render.

Thank you for checking the WP out and for giving me your feedback exactly the way I asked, you win the prize of the best WP reviewer so far ;-)

Cool. You know where to send the check, right?

Hi, I posted this in my Empire thread but not many poeple seem to be reading that any more and I'm quite proud of it :-) so I thought I'd repost here:

Adywan just released a comparison video of his new lightsabres vs. 04SE and I was glad to see that it looks similar to the way I colour corrected that scene in the Despecialized Edition. He of course re-rotoscoped the sabres, so his are higher quality but the general impression is very similar.

I'll post a comparison video later :-)

Do you want a nitpicking msycamore in your thread? ;) Seriously though, sorry if I am coming across as ignorant but have you already done Empire and Jedi? haven't followed these.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I feel like an asshole for saying this but to my eyes the saber is to orange, I know it's easy for a guy like me to just utter such shit, when you have obviously worked very hard on this, with the shitty '04 transfer as well, but I can't lie about what I think.

If we're talking improvements over the '04 transfer, you have suceeded by far. :) And Harmy, I'm in minority. Well done!

Well, yeah, I noticed that only now with this comparison. What is interesting though is that most of the time Ady's sabres are almost exactly the same colours as mine, even though mine aren't always quite right.

I'm still working on the flashes. It's tedious work but as I already started, I'm not gonna give up now.

Anyway, I'll wait until tomorrow evening for any further suggestions, and if I'll have finished the flashes by then, I'm gonna render a final workprint, review it and I'll start rendering the final output on Saturday.

So what are you doing to the flashes?

Making them less pink/purple and more red. It means I have to go through every blaster fight in the movie literally frame by frame, cut out the flashes and colour correct them separately.

You're not talking lightsaber flashes, you're talking blaster bolts?! You are a crazy person! Crazy awesome!

No, not bolts, only the flashes when the bolts hit something. I may be crazy, but not that crazy ;-)

Oh OK. that's better. I guess. ;-)

I'm sure it's a major pain to correct all those flash frames, but it will be well worth it in the end.  All that magenta being thrown in your face just looks so wrong.  I have no idea why only the flashes are pink but the laser blasts themselves stayed red, it's really bizarre.  In the GOUT the flashes are more of an orange.

I'm still working on that list of colour issues.  Nearly all of them are simply 2004 problems that haven't been fixed yet, and aren't anything you did incorrectly.  Hopefully I'll be done with that soon.

Would it be more helpful to have the subtitles as video files for the correct duration, or just as still images that you can work into each appropriate frame?

Well, a video which would be the length of the whole scene would make it a bit easier, as I'd only have to time the first one but the pictures would be easier to upload and download, so it's up to you. Thank you very much for doing this for me :-)

Maybe you could post your list in parts, so that I can start working on it while you're finishing the rest? I'm almost done with the flashes and don't feel like going to sleep yet ;-)

Also, if I understand it correctly, the subtitles are framed so that they fit the theatrical positioning in the GOUT, so when using the less cropped 04SE, they should be slightly smaller in the frame. Is that right?

And I don't mean that you should make them so, I'll scale them in AE based on the positioning in DJ's GOUT.

I uploaded the ESB list of changes picture comparison to Picasa. It can be found here.

Well, what I'm seeing is that in GOUT the blue is overall of more purple tone (on R2, the pod and the sky) which I think is caused by the red shift of GOUT.

Harmy, did you end up doing any more tweaking to the overly-blue R2 in the desert scenes?

While I agree the red shift of the GOUT was probably dulling some blues, the particular shot in the desert has obviously been boosted beyond typical color adjustment. It has the same kind of glowing blue that we see when R2 is in space. R2 is not supposed to be that blue.

Interesting tidbit: An original R2 was used in the "George Lucas Super Live Adventure" in Japan in 1993. I remember reading that people were constantly asking why R2 was black. Of course he wasn't black, but his original dark blue came across as black under certain lights. So to solve the problem of the original R2 not looking right, they painted him blue!

Well, I did try to tone it down but you can't do much because otherwise  you're doing so at the expense of other colours.

It very well could have been the black one they used for bluescreen shots...

Well, I've also read that the R2 they used in SW was darker blue than in the other films.

But talking about the black bluescreen R2, what's up with this shot? (Taken from GOUT).

That's definitely the blue one. Here's a guess: maybe they shot some with the regular R2 and a black background.
