I am actually tossing around re-doing this whole project from scratch, and if I decide to do this, I will not upload the version I have now, for obvious reasons, I really, really, can't stand the smearing on these, some areas it is really bad, but overall, the set does look very well, but for me the once in a while smearing takes away from the viewing experience LOL I will try and make up new DVD's and possibly for myself, a Blu-ray companion set just like the OT BD Set I am doing, but first, I NEED to finish up what I am working on now.

Now that would be the Ultimate set to me, the Saga Set coming out this Sept. and both the UOT and 97 SE on Blu as well, so I will see what I can do.

would placing colour corrected 2004 clips help with the smearing?

"HA, Ha, you r ghey" was probably a hilariously insulting comment in Elementary and Middle School, but its not cooly insulting anymore and its certainly not funny: it makes people who say it look like, well, an "inbred monkey." TheSessler

"I'm still %20 the wiser. It amused me that after doing a google image search for "The Final Milf" the second picture is Roger Delgado followed by lots and lots of porn." Bingowings

I support dark_jedi's reasons - afterall he wants to see it in its best form as much as we do. However at the same time, I understand why people are desperate to see it, which I think mainly stems from the fact that the broadcast versions are just not available anywhere, and regardless of quality people just want to 'watch' them. But again, I can understand why d_j wouldn't want his name attached to the release of these versions as they are, if they weren't upto a standard he was happy with.

Cool, dark_jedi. I'm looking forward to the new versions.

Releasing the '97 SE trilogy on Blu-Ray would actually prove a fantastic companion set for your OT Blu-Ray set. I think that would make a huge amount of people very, very happy :)

Well I wouldn't say huge LOL, not many people are interested in the Blu-ray Set I am doing now, but that is OK, we all have different tastes and all, as long as I make some of you happy, I am comfortable with that.

I am actually thinking about using the 04 DVD for the base, and replace all that was changed from 97 for the DVD's, and use the HD files(downscaled to 720p) with 720p upscaled scenes for the Blu-ray release, and for audio, 97 LD SE LPCM, 97 LD SE DD 2.0, and 97 LD SE DD 5.1, but I am just thinking out loud for now, I just want to make the best possible version I can since this will never get an official release either, which is to bad really.

It is just to bad that there is SO much smearing and other impurities for the lack of a better word, in ALL the different DV Broadcast versions, Hell I do not even know what I should try to match the color to, the LD rips are real dark, VHS versions not as pink, and the DV broadcast versions are all different to LOL, so do any of you have any suggestions? to be honest, the 04 really doesn't look that bad colorwise.

Add Harmy's Despecializations and the Revisited series, and that would most definitely be the ultimate, complete, be-all-end-all set of Star Wars.

Wouldn't it be best to just match the SE Blu's to your OT Blu's, colourwise?
That way, they all look exactly the same, but have different scenes, audio tracks, etc...

So what are you saying, just place the 97 SE scenes into what I already have done? that is actually not a bad idea, sure would be able to finish this a lot faster LOL.

I meant, try and get as close to the original OT regarding colours, when making the SE.

It's like you asked:

So, my suggestion is to match the SE's color to the OT.
If that won't work, the only logical thing I could come up with is to try and go back to the original SE color as much as possible.

I know it's only good for a few shots, but what about matching to the color from the original SE trailers?

My two cents:

I don't really think the SE trailers were correct enough to base color timing off of.

Despite the added detail from using the broadcast versions of the SE, I still find that motion smearing to be extremely distracting. It's in the Revivax and DJ's test clips. I like the looks of my LD transfer better because of this.

Combining the 97 and 04 isn't a bad idea, but to me they seem like totally different beasts. The end result can look fantastic, but I've wanted something to represent the YCM labs work done instead of the tinkered version. In trying to color match, the LDs will have the detail but can be saturated by different players. The Silver box VHS set is probably the best overall for this but of course has less resolution. In fact, I think it resembles the broadcast versions just in lower resolution and without the motion smearing.

I'm assuming the Silver VHS set was widescreen? I grew up on the Gold VHS set - which was fullscreen. So, I'd personally love if the colour matched that (or the Silver, assuming they're the same)

What did Adywan use as a colour base in his HD '97 SE reconstruction of TESB?

Can't be bad. I had that set too. May have less resolution but I don't really think that degrades from obtaining the right colours of that set.

Well whether or not I can get rid of the damn smearing or not, there will DEFINITELY be new DVD versions of these, I found some spots I wanted to clean up, and other stuff, the smearing I mainly want to get rid of is where it is worst, like in the Canyon, Ben's face, in the Cantina.

1 of my problems at the moment though, is trying to locate my back up DVD's of the darn DV Broadcasts & the 5.1 audio files, I was so glad I finally got my crappy\rotting DVDr's to rip I stored these in a safe place and forgot where the safe place is LOL, because I want to start this from scratch.

Sooo, only a new DVD version, or Blu's as well?

Because a Star Wars SE Blu-Ray edition, along with a Star Wars OT Blu-Ray edition, would pretty much make you my all-time hero. :)
Plus, I just think it would look better on your shelf, my shelf, your fanedit resumé, etc.. etc.. :)

EDIT: Thing is, I grew up with the SE, so your OT Blu-Ray set is a gift from heaven. And since my original SE set was a VHS one, I for one am dying to see the SE's again. And if possible, I'd like to see them in the best quality possible.
Your OT Blu's therefore show me that, if anyone can do it, you can! :)

Just out of curiosity, which color is more preferred here? top is 04, bottom is what all the DV Broadcasts look like, I think the 04 looks better for all exterior shots of Tantiv IV and the Star Destroyer(and the Planets for that matter, more color) and interior myself, but some of the 04 color looks like shit compared to the DV Broadcasts, like inside the Cantina, the Sand Crawler, the DV's look better, so let me know.

Now see that's really strange and inconsistent. The shot with vader looks better on '04, but 3PO's shot looks better with the DV broadcast. Did you mess up the order by mistake? They look like they match the ones they're not supposed to.

That being said, I could be wrong.

top is 04, bottom is DV, straight from DVD, as is, all I want to do is make this as good as it can be, it is not going to be perfect by any means, but obviously the more 04 I can use the less smearing.

Author
Time

I think the 04 looks better in both of those caps, but I'm sure that's not true all around.  Is a mix-match between the two versions colors a possibility?

The 97s are color timed to match George's Tech IB print. Then the telecines deviate from that. I still prefer this warmer palette to anything 04.

I just do not like the pink tint, but I did not use all the 04, there are scenes on board Tantiv IV that look way better from the DV.
