SW, like most of us here, has been a very important part of my life for decades now.  I won't get into the whole story, but I had a really rough time growing up and the SW movies were an escape for me...I also have very fond memories of bonding over SW with people who have since passed away.  So when people say they are "just movies", well, to some of us they are not because of all of the nostalgia we have attached to them.  From a more artistic point of view, SW was groundbreaking for its time and was one of the greatest achievements of human culture...whether you like it or not, you cannot deny its impact on the world.

This, this, and this. Well put!

And this is why it should have never been given the treatment GL has given it over the last 15 years. It's equivalent to Da Vinci burning the Mona Lisa. Does Lucas even understand that he is the only person to alter his movies and suppress the real versions from the public? I guess not talking to anyone who criticizes your actions disconnects you from reality. Too bad Kate Lucas is following in her father's footsteps: it would mean the originals would be suppressed long after GL's death.

Even though the special editions were the ones I grew up with

My father would force (well, not force..) us to watch the Original-Original versions to show that it was important to see what the films looked like before they were changed. We ended up wearing out the VHS but I'm glad he did that. It really gave me an appreciation for film and preserving film.
