I wonder what the original HD masters look like that came from Lowry before LFL started doing the mucking about.

Probably much the same as the 2004 versions, but without the changes to the '97 SE's as the colour correction destruction was done before they sent it out to Lowry. This is one reason i don't think the colars will be fixed because i can't see Lucas paying for another clean-up job when he thinks there is nothing wrong with the HD masters he has now.

Well, that depends on what constitutes fixing the colours. If you and I can sort of fix the colours, so can LFL. Granted, there are some unsalvageable errors in the 04 transfers but it could still be an improvement.

If it has all or most of the quality control problems of 2004, I'd at least say you've been ripped off.

We will all see this September won't we, I just refuse to buy into this whole Doom and Gloom thing, and right out of the box label it an "Epic Fail", sorry, but until we have rock solid proof of this, and people have actually seen them in person, pretty much everyone is talking, well you figure it out.

I seem to remember a lot of this kind of talk around the boards back in 2006... and in 2004... and in 2005 pre-ROTS. I think some of us have experienced it enough to kind of know what to expect.

Every time there is someone who plays the "Oh gee fellas, let's reserve judgment" role, and usually after the fateful date they really can't say a whole lot. Well, I say they can't say a whole lot... they do usually hang on desperately for a bit... but eventually they get tired of lying to themselves to save face.

In 2006 it was "Aw come on, non-anamorphic doesn't look that bad!" and "Well, we did ask for 'unaltered' LOL and anamorphic would have been altered... come on, George's massive cock feels real great in the rectum if you just bend over and relax!"

Bück dich, dein gesicht ist mir egal!

Actually, Lowry worked on the films last, in the workflow. So, the SE changes and colouring were all already there when Lowry received them. ILM did a final pass to re-tweak some of the colours because some of Lowry's clean-up shifted the levels a bit--probably stuff like contrast needing correction due to stabilizing the shimmering film densities and things like that.

I wish they had given a little more details about the technical aspect of the Blu-Rays.  With each film getting a 6.1 DTS audio track i guess that means every film will have a new mix. I'm really hoping that they take a leaf out of the Clone Wars tv series surround tracks and have the dialogue and FX in the centre channel without any music bleed through. This would be a fan editors wet dream ;)

Agreed.  I was sort of looking foward to see if they would announce some fixes to the OT similar to what you are doing in your edits.  One can only hope I guess..

I don't own a BR player at the current time (yes, I am one of those people lol) and I have no plans to buy one anytime soon.  If Luca$ would have done this right, I would have bought a BR player just for this.  However, he did not...and nothing about that surprises me at all!  From a business sense, I think he is terrible because he keeps putting out shoddy products and finding weird ways to justify it.  If he were an auto manufacturer (for example), he would have probably indirectly killed dozens of families by now, been sued 10 times over and forced out of business.

SW, like most of us here, has been a very important part of my life for decades now.  I won't get into the whole story, but I had a really rough time growing up and the SW movies were an escape for me...I also have very fond memories of bonding over SW with people who have since passed away.  So when people say they are "just movies", well, to some of us they are not because of all of the nostalgia we have attached to them.  From a more artistic point of view, SW was groundbreaking for its time and was one of the greatest achievements of human culture...whether you like it or not, you cannot deny its impact on the world.

Now let's take us to today.  I don't own the '04 set, I don't own the GOUT, and I have purchased NOTHING SW related in the last 10 or so years and I will continue with this until I see what I want and like.  Luca$ has every right to do what he wants with his product, and that is the perks of owning your work.  For every 1 of me, there are probably 5 more who don't mind the changes or are too young to know the back story and the OT (this second point is extremely sad to me, but a whole other in-depth discussion for another time).

I had a theory once TPM hit, and with each passing year, I think I may be right:  the original SW films were a total fluke due to the "perfect storm" of events and circumstances, and that total fluke ended up producing amazing and memorable films.  I say this because it is painfully obvious to me that Luca$ does not know what he is doing, and makes it all up when he goes along.  This is what happens when you have way too much money, way too much time on your hands, and people who will continue to tout your greatness while making excuses for you, and who will continue to buy your inferior, corner-cutting products no matter what...

Well said, ESHBG!

What was annoying to me about the GOUT was how Lucas basically exploited the hell out of people's nostalgia. I can't think of any other movie (or series of movies) that a company could get away with shoveling laserdisc-era transfers of onto dvd in 2006 when we had hd-on-disc formats (for crying out loud) and still sell as many copies. Star Wars defies comparison in many ways, and this is just one of them.

Thanks, Fang Zei, and I totally agree!  Thank you, Jaitea!

I just read some mildly interesting reviews of the blu ray releases over at Amazon.  It looks like several people view things the way we do, but there are still the hordes of LFL worshippers defending everything Lucas has done to degrade the films.

I know its been said over and over but Star Wars is not what it used to be (to the masses, anyway).  I think the changes to the overall genre happened so gradually that the general public didn't even notice what was taking place.

How can they even honestly call it the 'original trilogy'?

What they mean by "original trilogy" is actually "original vision trilogy." *snicker*

People posting "reviews" on Amazon about something they doesn't actually have in their grubby hands to watch yet is ridiculous. I still can't find out what version of SW is in that bloated Fox 75th anniversary box set!

Yeah, but the fact the packaging doesn't even give you a clue is kind of sad.

Putting a 2004 revision into a subset of 70's/80's films is a tad misleading.

And this is why it should have never been given the treatment GL has given it over the last 15 years. It's equivalent to Da Vinci burning the Mona Lisa. Does Lucas even understand that he is the only person to alter his movies and suppress the real versions from the public? I guess not talking to anyone who criticizes your actions disconnects you from reality. Too bad Kate Lucas is following in her father's footsteps: it would mean the originals would be suppressed long after GL's death.

The final destruction of star wars is complete with no restoration of the originals there is no viable film print for theatrical exhibition ever in the future, never mind no decent home video release. The films themselves will be forever lost.

Lucas self fulfilled mission to erase the originals from all but our childhood memories is complete.

Even though the special editions were the ones I grew up with

*makes frink feel old gif*

My father would force (well, not force..) us to watch the Original-Original versions to show that it was important to see what the films looked like before they were changed. We ended up wearing out the VHS but I'm glad he did that. It really gave me an appreciation for film and preserving film.

It's especially ridiculous when you consider the fact that just about every important film from that era except the OOT has been nicely restored or at the very least faithfully remastered in hi-def.

Author
Time

AND films that are a great deal older than the OOT have also been nicely remastered. What the hell Lucas??? What the hell??

However you might feel about Blade Runner, hate it, love it, you have to respect that you can choose which version of the film you want to watch on Blu Ray. It's the only way to do Director's Cuts. I'm fine with re-editing movies, obviously, as long as the original isn't snuffed out of existence. Have any other directors attempted to replace their films with impostors like Lucas?

What motive could they possibly have for passing on the money they'd get from treating the OOT properly? They could sell it in some crazy limited edition archival Blu-Ray set like the Beatles Mono box, devoted solely to the OOT, charge a premium for it and market it as diehard-collectors-only if they wanted, and still make money hand over fist. Make any changes you want to the films after that. Put Jar-Jar in an X-Wing in A New Hope for all I care. We'll have our Star Wars Archival Editions. The obviousness of this makes it seem like it's something personal, not just business, that's responsible for the OOT's deliberate absence from the Blu Ray set.
