GOUT 2020 in PostageStampOrama (TM), the LD Transfers now with even thicker boarders.

THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION OF STAR WARS ON BLU-RAY FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! HERE'S THE FIRST SCREENSHOT!!!

:-D

Imagine the following trailer:

For an entire generation people have experienced Star Wars the only way it has been possible, in the Special Edition.

But if you've only seen it this way, you haven't seen it at all!

Now after decades of wasted time in changing perfect movies.

See the Oscar winning original theatrical version.

With its original visual effects.

With its original Sound and Score.

And no more surprises!

Oh, yeah, that's my voice :-) I made that trailer ages ago and have an improved version of it somewhere, which is one of the bonuses on the ROTJ Reconstruction PAL DVD9.

Since no one's brought it up yet....

Maybe part of the reason they chose AOTC Yoda as the "big face" on the PT blu-ray is because they've now replaced the TPM puppet with the (ironically much closer-looking to the TESB/ROTJ puppet) digital model?

Also, while I'm on the subject:

If LFL ever put out some sort of "ultimate edition" blu-ray of TPM that included the theatrical cut (perhaps late next year for the blu-ray 3D, hint-hint if you're reading this, LFL) I would seriously consider paying good money for it. Regardless of our opinions on the movie, it had one of the highest U.S. box office grosses of the 90's (second only to Titanic for that entire decade, if I'm not mistaken) and the original version deserves to be preserved if for no other reason than history.

By the way, I'll take this opportunity to reiterate my desire for ultimate sets of the OT that include not only the OOT but the '97 OT as well. Doesn't ANH SE still have the highest U.S. January gross of all time? Talk about box office!

Okay kids here is me putting up or shutting up with my own idea for the complete saga's cover art.

The blue text and logo would be printed on a clear plastic slip cover that would set above the artwork.

The cover itself would be printed in 3D Lenticular plastic that and would switch from picture to picture when tilted from side to side.

Not too shabby for a couple hours work huh? I'm sure I could do better but I really don't want to waste anymore time on it.

I love the way Vader is pointing to his junk as if to say "I might be a mess but by Episode IV at least I've grown a pair".

It's an interesting design especially in the context of the ESB reveal thread.

What, you mean it's like putting *SPOILER* on the cover of Planet of the Apes?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

If the cover is like this one:

perhaps that would be a wise move, there must be more people now who don't know the ending now than there were twenty years ago.

to call the 501st cosplayers? That's going a little bit too far.

They dress up in costumes and play stormtroopers. If that isn't cosplay, what is it?

I'm with Ray on this one.  Those guys are dressing up and pretending to be... actors who dressed up and pretended.  It's pretend pretending.  The 90-minute piece is Lucas catering to the portion of the fan base that drinks the Kool Aid.

He may be a lot of things, but savvy businessman is still top of the list.  The TFNers are guaranteed profit from every revenue stream he can come up with.  From a wealth & power perspective,it's wise to put them before us.  There's no honor or integrity in doing so, but he's printing money.  Too bad for us.

Hey guys! I'm not sure any of you remember me, but I used to talk about fan-edits concerning (primarily) "The Lord of the Rings" as "book-cuts" way back in 2005 through 2006-ish. Wow, half a decade ago!

anyway, since whenever some new Star Wars news comes to light, the first thing I do is check this forum out! Glad to have people agree with me about the films!

Because of the many negative remarks on the official Blu-Ray artwork, I felt like doing the same idea, but reversing the focus... now, if you absolutely hated the official cover, chances are you won't like my reinterpretation - but that's fine, it didn't take me an awful long time to paint, and I had fun with it.

maybe you'll like it too? Or put it to some good use, even!

It's on my DeviantArt page. Just thought it would be more on-topic then the Criterion DVDs. ;)

All the artwork you need on Lucasfilm releases anymore.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I'm pretty sure he made Star Wars to make money from getting us to watch robots hit each other and kids drive too fast.

His friends thought a bit of story and characterisation would be a good idea.

In the seventies George listened to his friends.

In the eighties George discovered that puppets were easier to control and burps were funny.

After Jurassic Park he came to the conclusion that puppets were so 20th Century and farts and poop were funny.

I think people forget this too often. I highly reccomend everyone on this forum read "The Making of Star Wars". The old George was very different from billionaire George.

When working on Star Wars, Lucas revised the script multiple times. The first draft was pretty much completely different from the final draft. This was because he was getting continuous feedback from (now famous) directors that he graduated film school with. They would critique each others works, and George would listen, making appropriate changes.

Do you think Lucas did this for the prequels? Hell, do you think he did this for Jedi? It's obvious that he didn't like the lack of control he had over Empire with Kersh in charge of things, so for Jedi, he decided to choose someone he knew he could control. Hell, he even admits it:

"I've got to find a director* who's willing to give up some of his domain to me and is willing to work with me and accept the fact that he's essentially doing a movie that's been established, that ultimately I'll have the final say."

*replace director with EVERYONE ON THE SET when talking about prequels

The sort of fanedits I tend to like are where the editor has paid attention to what the creator seems to have attempted to do and restructured the piece to those ideas.

Your cover is essentially the same idea as the official one but made to work and the inclusion of the Death Star is an inspired decision.

Lucas (back when he used to make sense) argued that the first film was all about the power of the spirit trumping the power of technology.

Having this technological moon intruding on the natural beauty of duel sunset illustrates that central idea really well when seen in the context of it's eventual destruction.

It's a much higher quality of painting too.

It also makes more narrative sense as the son and the innocent form of the father are running to meet each other (the ultimate climax of the saga).

In the official version little Anakin is running to catch up to a ghostly Luke which make no sense at all.

I think the artist probably didn't know anything about Star Wars and thought Luke and Anakin were the same person since they were blonde.

 (Edited)

Maybe it's time to concede and admit that Star Wars is now Star Was.

It is nice to know that there are those here that 1) have a passion for SW the way it was and 2) have the talent/desire/time to do something about it.

Thank goodness for people like Adywan and the countless others that the rest of us rely on for quality SW viewing. Thanks guys.

I do not fear the Dark Side as you do.

I saw this at The Digital Bits and just had to post:

In announcement news today, Shout! Factory has finally revealed that the Battle Beyond the Stars: 30th Anniversary Special Edition will street on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/12 (SRP $26.97 and $19.93). Both will include new transfers from the original internegative.

Too bad Lucas can't afford to make a new transfer of Star Wars.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Wow, this is really weird behavior coming from the king of dragging things off topic and pointless ridiculous threads.

You do realize you're not a mod here, right? Seriously, just don't click on this thread and go post some fist pumps or caricatures that make fun of racial stereotypes in some of your Off-Topic threads. Please. Some of us enjoy talking about this kind of thing and prefer to do so without being griped at.

That's uncalled for.  Frink's GIFs are all about the action or facial expression contained therein, and depict people from a wide range of racial groups, as even a cursory glance at Frink's GIF thread might be expected to reveal.  If you don't like Frink's tendency to go off topic, then that's fair enough, but the above smacks of mudslinging.

For the record, I don't think the Criterion discussion is too far off topic.  I'm sure most of us agree that we usually tolerate far worse.

To be on topic, I've decided to buy the BD set.  The fact that I want the OOT restored doesn't override the fact that I watch and will watch edits based on the Special Editions and I believe in buying what I watch when it's commercial available.  To me it's that simple.
