That list of features is really underwhelming. I wasn't expecting the OOT, but I was sort of expecting some impressive extras that would at least be worth a Netflix rental.

I'm still seriously thinking about that "sticker campaign":

WARNING: These discs DO NOT
contain the ORIGINAL 1977, 1980
and 1983 versions of the Original
Star Wars Trilogy! Buyer Beware!

(and your Blu-ray player will explode if
you attempt to play them). ;-)

Yes.

Shit would be awesome.

Nice image.  But it should just say Star Wars.  No episode IV or A New Hope that was added in 1981 i believe.

Yeah, I was thinking that too.

However, I don't see Criterion ever getting their hands on the film. Call me naive, but I think we'll get the OOT a few years after these blu rays. It's going to be a frustrating wait, and we'll probably have ESB and ROTJ Revisited by then, but George has already backed away from the whole "all copies of the original should be destroyed" ideology.

Now, he needs to back away from the "it's too expensive to remaster" bullshit.

Is anyone boycotting this release?.....

Good question. If they are, they're not being very vocal about it.

A "theatrical edition" search on Twitter today revealed SEVERAL tweets in favor of boycotting this crap until the theatrical editions are released. I was happy to see that.

This.

They always do a great job. But- (Insert Lucas rant here.)

Er... except for my Criterion edition DVD of Time Bandits.  And my Criterion edition DVD of Brazil.  Those are two terrible DVDs.  And fully half of the Criteriod DVDs that I have.

I guess "always" wasn't the right word since I only own two.

;(

I know Criterion was "da bomb" during the days of LaserDisc.  Are any of their DVDs reference material?

The Brazil DVD was bad? They released a whole boxset of all the multiple versions in a time that was 5 years ahead of when it became standard practice to do this, plus a feature-length original documentary about the struggles of the film--they did the Blade Runner set half a decade before the Blade Runner set existed. Without Criterion, DVD wouldn't have been what it is today. They practically created all the high standards that we hold, or hope, studios abide by, whether its uncut versions, cinematographer or director approved transfers from the highest quality elements, original audio, deleted scenes, commentary tracks, audio essays, retrospective documentaries, rare television appearances, and insert booklets. The only thing I used to complain about was their price, which was preportional to their sales/interest, but that has come down close to the same as big studio releases. Their innovations in the LD era and continuing efforts in the DVD era helped create the home video standards we now have.

One can hardly blame Criterion for doing non anamorphic releases in the early days of the DVD format. Took a while for even the major studios to realize simply porting existing LD masters over to a new digital format was not going to cut it. All except Lucasfilm of course. ;)

Don't know DVDs, but their Blu-rays are pretty sweet.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I have to agree with Zombie84. I have at least 30 Criterion DVDs and I have nothing but love for them. They are definitely the reason you see other DVD sets with theatrical versions and other features. I've discovered some interesting films by just getting random movies that look even mildly interesting.

I love Brazil (definitely see it, if you haven't yet) and although I don't own the CC Brazil DVD set, I have seen one of the versions on that set and enjoyed it. What specifically didn't you like about Brazil or Time Bandits, xhonzi? I'm thinking about getting the Brazil set soon but if there's an issue maybe I'll reconsider (it's not cheap).

    Brazil was an amazing film.

I've been thinking about what would be required for me to purchase a Blu saga boxset.  For me, it's just a question of the expense of the set. I'd have to justify it (and the new player to go with it). GL can put out any product he wants. It's his sandbox filled with his toys.

Thing is, the PT in SD is plenty for me, there's Revisited for ANH and  ESB, and there are theatrical reconstructions of ROTJ. Yeah, they're in SD, but HD SEs aren't enough. The bonus material isn't enough for me to shell out, either.

What I think it would take.

For ANH and ESB: A purist Revisted style enhancement. Maybe a few extra effects as long as they don't scream out "Hey, look at me! I'm NEW!!" too loudly.

For ROTJ and the PT:  A purist Revisited style treatment as a base. Then, a full-on "Official" "Authorized" fan-edit of those films. Strong color enhancement for ROTJ and maybe something different for parts of AOTC. Everything to improve tension and pace of the four. Some cuts to de-kiddify TPM and AOTC. Eliminate everything possible that the die-hard fans found especially objectionable. Add some deleted scenes and new elements if they can be made to work well. Put it all in HD. If the originals are to be included, maybe they could fit in SD.

I'd like to have any Blu set (especially new bonus discs) but it must be substantially better than what I have now. :)

Criterion version of Robocop is still my favourite version. Blu-ray and other DVD releases sucked in comparison.

+1 for Criterion to handle the originals, from me. But, I do think this is very wishful thinking - it would be mega if they did though!

I'm just thrilled that http Jake Lloyd made the cover of the complete saga packaging!  Hallmark should get involved in making the packaging say "yippee" when you open it up!  Here is what the back of the packaging says...

Galatians 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

What did we honestly do to deserve to be constantly fucked int he ass? It seems the better quality home video gets, the OT gets increasingly worse treatment. GL/LFL are probably the most sadistic people alive today (outside of a third world dictatorship). They made the most profitable franchise in movie history, so I guess that gives them the right to screw people over and not even give a fuck about the legacy they are destroying. Lucas is a fraud. A stone cold, utterly talentless fraud. NO one honestly expected the PT to as bad as it ended up. NO one expected the OT to be constantly changed every seven years and make the originals that made him an undeserving billionaire unavailable and impossible to enjoy. All he is done in the last 20 years is expose himself for the waste of life he truly is. He is scum. And people think I am insane? GL and his cartel have not done a sane, reasonable act since 1981.

I'm pretty sure he made Star Wars to make money from getting us to watch robots hit each other and kids drive too fast.

His friends thought a bit of story and characterisation would be a good idea.

In the seventies George listened to his friends.

In the eighties George discovered that puppets were easier to control and burps were funny.

After Jurassic Park he came to the conclusion that puppets were so 20th Century and farts and poop were funny.

Disney held out for a while, but practically all of my other early DVDs were Anamorphic.

I think the reason a lot of Criterion DVDs weren't anamorphic was that they were reusing LaserDisc masters instead of doing new ones for DVD.

Picture quality is mega crap.  Sound (Stereo) is adequate, but it's nothing special.

The special features are nice.  But do people want Criterion to handle a Star Wars release so it can have nice special features?  Or so the "picture and sound" can be restored and presented at their best?

Fair enough.  I have no disagreement here.  Their LD work was extensive.  It seems it took them a long time to produce DVD quality DVDs...

I just don't know of any Criterion DVDs that are 'reference' quality when it comes to A/V.  I only have 4 of them (two Terry Gilliams, and two Wes Andersons).  The first two have crap A/V, and the other two are "pretty good" but nothing that would make me say, "Holy Crap!  Get these guys to do all of my movies!"

It just seems to me that people continued to go nuts over Criterion stuff on DVD merely due to what they did for LD.  Even when their DVD stuff was sub par.

What BDs of theirs have great A/V?

Seems response at starwars.com isn't too positive:

GuardianKen said:

I do like the complete saga box art, but the individual trilogy box art looks terrible, like someone dropped the ball

boffomusicguy said:

All my favorite moments? Really? I'll list them.-Han shoots first.-Jabba is not in Episode IV-We never see the full Wampa creature on Hoth.-In Episode V, the Emperor has the face of an old woman and is actually voiced by Clive Revill as the end credits state.-We don't see Vader return to his Super Star Destroyer after dueling Luke in Episode V-Hayden Christensen is not Anakin's force ghost in Episode VI-The original music from the end celebration in Episode VI.Now, if the set delivers those moments in full HD and 6.1 DTS Master Audio, I'll pre-order tomorrow (which is payday for me), otherwise, as previously stated, I will not buy it or accept it as a gift.

JoeC said:

This countdown to star wars day was a major disappointment. Has a lifelong fan of the original trilogy I felt betrayed.

Not at all excited about the box art

Jedi Sprite said:

I'm sorry Lucasfilm but the Complete Saga artwork is terrible.

Too bad most of the critical comments seem to be about the artwork and not the actual movies (or lack thereof).

How hard is it to also post the link:

Seems more like you are being highly selective.  5 selected negatives out of 132... (and there's so many double posts...)  How could you gloss over post 2?

Great job looking forward to star wars the complete saga on September 16th on blu-ray disc. Star Wars is forever.

By "Star Wars" I guess he means the special editions.

Potentially my mistake, then. In that case, who does A/V right?

I'm certainly not an expert here.  Is Robert Harris the right answer?
