I liked the early 90's Classic Star Wars comics, which reprinted and edited the 1981 -1983 Goodwin / Williamson comic strips. ... ... ...

it was very entertaining and imaginative.

THAT is all I'm looking for in my EU.

Like pretty much all of the EU, it's totally unnecessary and speculative, taking liberties with situations and characters that don't go over well with everyone, but when I was 12 it was very entertaining and imaginative.

Isn't this pretty much the case with any fictional work?

That George used to have little to no involvement prior to the Prequels.  Since the prequels everything has to be tied into those bad movies.

They have to reference Hayden Skywalker which is horrible imho.

I recently re-read the Thrawn Trilogy and still found it to be very enjoyable.  I've been wanting to read the rest of Zahn's stuff, since it all came out after I'd stopped reading EU.

I just finished the Knights of the Old Republic comics.  Some might remember some comments I made about them earlier- when I read the part that crossed over with the Legacy comics I was reading at the time.  My comments were basically- "It's very goofy, and Alf seems to be a main character".  Having read the entire series, I have to say I lightened up on it somewhat... but everyonce in a while they would make references back to the older Tales of the Jedi/Knights of the Old Republic comics and the difference in tone was staggering.  Last I read them, the Tom Veitch (and to a lesser degree, Kevin J. Anderson) Tales of the Jedi comics were like a serious film.  And the new KotOR comics more like a decent Saturday morning cartoon, not entirely aimed at kids.  It pains me to think that these comics are related in any way, so I mostly revert to thinking of them as separate chronologies.

And yes, I did sneak in a fond memory of the Tales of the Jedi series in there.  I thought they were really good at the start and to the degree that KJA took over they suffered.  But still better than what's coming out now.

It's nice to remember when KJA was my least favourite SW author.  Those were simpler times, weren't they?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

Only Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy really captured the atmosphere of the original films, though at times it was a bit... off. Though that was more him adding his own interpretation to it so it works. Mostly.

The only things I don't really agree with is

1) all the Jedi that come out of the woodwork despite the films setting it up that Luke is *the* last fully trained Jedi, for real, no exceptions, no passing go, no collecting $200.

2) Zahn underestimates the industrial might of the galaxy when he suggests that 600 relatively small and obsolete warships could tip the balance of power in Thrawn's favor.

But other than that, practically the only Star Wars EU material that's worth reading.

I'm going to stop on the way home today and look for Tales From Mos Eisley.  If it's not at Borders, I'll just order it from Amazon.  I've perused it online and it is definitely the 1970s universe.  Plus it comes recommended from people on here that I trust.

Besides, how can I pass on a book that has one of us in it?....

You should mention that to Warb.  I don't think he reads this forum.

Awesome, all the way around! "We Don't Do Weddings" is by far my favorite, with "One Last Night in the Mos Eisley Cantina" as my least favorite. A love story between the wolfman and the drooling arm/worm? No thank you. But as you said, it is pre-SE.

I don't even think the drooling arm is in the movie any more, is it? Didn't it get replaced with an elephant or something?

The wolfman was replaced with the elephant.

I wonder how THAT fits into canon now...

I can't help but love the TOTJ comics. Sure, the art wasn't always the best and some of the dialogue hokey, but I loved the feel of the stories ... I loved that ancient feel to it ... I like how the Jedi were presented and I love how the Sith were developed - so much so that I consider Veitch the true creator of the Sith, not Lucas.

It's a shame the KOTOR comics don't capture that same feel. As far as post-PT EU goes the series is pretty good, and I actually like it, but it just doesn't compare. It's supposed to take place only a couple decades after TOTJ, but the style of everything - from the ships to the buildings - looks more PT/OT in appearance. And the Jedi and Sith - while not as bad as the PT-era versions, still have that prequel-taint on them.

Sigh ... I can't help but think that the KOTOR comics (and all of the EU, for that matter) would have been so much better in a PT-less universe. No more Darths, or Padawans, or younglings, or limited lightsaber colours ...

Except for the easter eggs they threw in for fans of the game KOTOR is not very much like the game at all.

Nice to know the writer of that game is writing the Darth Revan novel

Drew Karpyshyn : I wonder what defining characteristics I'll give Revan in this new novel?

Hmm ... how about the ones I gave Darth Bane and Zannah!

Constructive Criticizer : But Drew, neither Bane nor Zannah had a personality. They were

pretty much bland, depthless, evil-for-the-sake-of-being-evil

stereotypes!

Drew Karpyshyn : Exactly! It's a great idea! I'm going for it!

Constructive Criticizer : But -

Drew Karpyshyn : Now, I need to think of a plot ... the meat of the story ... You got any

ideas, C.C.?

Constructive Criticizer : Well, there's -

Drew Karpyshyn : I know! Revan goes off in search of a lost holocron ...

Constructive Criticizer : I'm outta here.

Drew Karpyshyn : Wait! I need your opinion on what Revan's Super Sexy Secret

Apprentice's lightsaber colour should be! I've narrowed the possible

choices down to red and blood-red!

Went to Borders to see about Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina. No luck, so I have to order it.  I looked through tons of Star Wars books, most were of zero interest because they're prequel. However, this caught my attention.

It's set during the construction of the first Death Star.  Perry wrote one of only three Indiana Jones novels I've not read, so I know nothing of his style. Anyone familiar with this book?

I haven't read Death Star, but going by Wookieepedia characters and events from the PT appear/are mentioned, so it wouldn't be a "SW '77" type of novel.

Han Solo Trilogy (not the first one, the second one that leads right into star wars). Im working on the first one from Brian Daley.

Thrawn trilogy was good.

For one off books, I, Jedi was pretty sweet. Its set after ROTJ when Luke is running the jedi training deal on yavin.

I read it. Didn't make much of an impression to be honest. It plays very much into the EU concept that every-single-person is in fact pivotal to the Rebellion/Empire conflict.

Grand Moff Tarkin's butler? Secret rebel. Chef at Death Star canteen? Potential Jedi. Guy who flipped switch to fire Death Star? Luke's cousin. One-eyed monster in the garbage room? Elaborate backstory.

Theres the really bad part about the eu, shrinking universe. Everything has to be connected now. Ruins the whole thing which is why I quit reading anything new.

Which is why I really like the Tales from the New Republic and Empire. Save for a couple stories from Zahn which include his characters, its all people who were never SEEN nor heard about in the movies living their lives in the Star Wars universe.

The New Republic/Empire ones aren't people in the background.

What i like about the EU, other writers getting to write star wars, not just Lucas.

Who pretty much since Return of the Jedi has controlled the entire show, even though then he had input from Marquand or Kasden.

Then starting with episode 1 he decided to write and direct the rest by himself without any help except the art department, huge mistake in my opinion, other fans think it was a plus since he finally achieved his vision.

But if the prequels were the vision he intended for the oot then i would have never become a fan, and Lucas would not be a household name and a visionary to so many.
