yes but, Ady, the difference between colour and sound and 3d movies is that while eventually colour and sound catched on, 3d didn't catch on in the 50's, nor in the 70's or 80's. What makes you think it's gonna catch on now, apart from the technology being ready? people are already tired of it.

Well for one the red/blue glasses effect was pretty crap and that was the main reason why it didn't catch on. And most of the 3D movies of the time just had gimmicky things coming at the screen just to say "3D". i know some movies now are doing the same thing but the 3D technology today is so much better and, when done correctly, the 3D effect can really enhance the experience of a movie. And now 3D TVs are becoming as cheap as ordinary 2D TV's more and more people are going to buy into the 3D experience, especially when more movies are becoming available in 3D. Plus the newer "glasses free" TV's are becoming available which i know that many people like 3D but just hate wearing the glasses

I really can't see why some people have such a huge problem with movies being done in 3D. It's not as if you HAVE to watch the 3D version (ok apart from Star Wars, but what's new there). Anytime a 3D movie is released in theatres there is also the option to watch it in 2D. It's a choice. If you don't like 3D then you don't have to watch it. It's the same when they are released on Blu-Ray.

I don't think that 3D is just a fad this time. It's here to stay and i, for one, love it. Some conversions are pretty crappy and give you a headache but when they are done properly they can look really good. It's the same old argument with film-makers that's been going on since the early days of cinema. First it was  sound, then it was complaints about the use of colour in films taking away the artform, then digital and on and on...... Things evolve and things change

I totally agree. And I must admit that if a 3D film doesn't have at least some in your face 3D effects, which I find very entertaining, I usually leave the cinema disappointed - such was the case with Avatar - I saw a few 3D films in IMAX (mostly documentaries) and I was totally blown away, then I saw Avatar in a normal 3D cinema and I was disappointed by how not so 3D it was, so I went to see it in IMAX, thinking it must have been the projection technology and screen size but I was disappointed again.

And I'm going to see TPM in 3D because it's got a lot of scenes that will look amazing in 3D. While the film is crapy in terms of it being STAR WARS, I'm sure it's gonna be a great 3D experience simply because it's an FX spectacle. And it's also (well, sadly) the first SW film I saw in cinema as a kid, so it's also got a nostalgia value for me.

Just an anecdote:

I saw Toy Story 3 in 3D. A few weeks later, I saw Toy Story 3 in 2D. Obviously the movie had no problems with being in 3D, as they could easily render a second camera - no crappy upconversion. But there was nothing added to the movie by being in 3D either. It was a great film, but not even the descent into hell scene was particularly enhanced by the third dimension.

Pixar makes very restrained and tasteful use of 3D.  Nothing in your face, just an expansion of the environment.  After a while you hardly even notice the effect anymore, it just becomes a part of the look of it.  If it weren't for those damn glasses (especially irritating when you have to put them over real glasses in order to see) it would be almost perfect.

I saw Up in 3D when it came out, as well as the Toy Story 1 and 2 double feature, and the third one.  Enjoyed all of those quite a lot, even with the glasses problem.  Coraline was good that way too.  But I pretty much save 3D viewing for special things only; I wouldn't want to watch movies that way on a regular basis.  If they could do it without the glasses, that'd be another matter.  But I still prefer the 2D look on the whole.  Never did bother to see Avatar.

Now when they can do true holographic images . . . then I'll be really interested.

Not in my country. Well, at least not always.

I have a feeling Lucas will soon be saying "I always intented the original Star Wars to be on 3D but the studio didn't let me do it"

He's already said the digital Yoda couldn't be realized properly until now that it's in 3D. (Remember when that thing was the hottest shit? or when the '97 creatures were billed as "photorealistic")

My hope is that there will be a simultaneous 2d release for cinemas that cannot project the 3d version just like it is with most 3d releases.  I'd take a 2d extra-super-special edition release over nothing.    However, my gut tells me it won't be that easy.

That would be great. I want to watch STAR WARS in 3D but I'd also like to have the opportunity to see them in the cinema in classic 2D and this way, I wouldn't have to go to the cinema with an eye-patch :-D

You answered your own question. If people had to go see Avatar wearing red and blue paper glasses do you think anyone would have given a shit about 3D? You get those things out of cereal boxes.

Ah, but the system that started off the 3D craze in the fifties (Bwana Devil) used polarized lenses just like we use today.

We've had the technology since the 1930's, it's just never permanently caught on.

Glasses to let you watch 3D movies in 2D.  I wonder how well they work.

Having virtually no memory of seeing the OT in theaters, I may try this.

I'll be darned! I was actually thinking about whether an old pair of sunglasses would do this just the other day. I like 3D, but in the unlikely event I really wanted to see a movie that was simply a bad 2D conversion, it might be an option. ;)

Where were you in '77?

All it does is show the same image to both eyes by blocking the other image (instead of just blocking it for one eye). There's no reason why they wouldn't work. I saw a video on how to make your own somewhere.

You could make them just buy grabbing two pairs of 3D glasses and popping and popping the lenses out and making one pair with two right eyes and one pair with two left eyes, right? Or am I over simplifying it?

If I am not mistaken, then the hardest part would be modifying the lenses so that they fit the opposite eye in the frame.

Still, seems kind of silly to have to wear a pair of stupid glasses just to watch a movie.

That's definitely oversimplified. The lenses have to be polarized in a specific way, they're not simple sunglasses. And those 3D-2D glasses wouldn't work everywhere because for example one of the cinemas in my town uses active LCD glasses, (the same technology most 3D TVs use) so these 3D-2D glasses would be useless for that, the only thing that could help is an eye-patch ;-)

I, along with many other people, have to wear glasses to watch a regular movie, so i don't see the problem with the glasses

Hmm... who are these "people" you speak of?  ;)

As a non glasses wearing-person, I would have thought that people already wearing one pair of glasses wouldn't mind so much wearing two pair to watch a 3D movie, but these "people" seem to be the most violently opposed, and they use the fact that they're already wearing one pair as strong argument against wearing two.  Several people have said that the 3D glasses fit well-enough over their prescription glasses, but maybe that's not true for all the vision-challenged...  Anyways, it usually seems to be the insult of wearing another pair as if the 3D movie makers were to blame for their wearing the first pair.

But I digress.  :(

I won't see the 3-D versions as a form of protest, and i won't be buying the blu ray.

No money for Lucas until the originals get the respect they are due.

I wish around where i lived there were illicit showings of the original versions in 35mm.
