Or maybe not. The original print of Star Wars was not expected to be in the bad state that they found.

I'm just worried people will get hung up arguing about the exact nature of how the negative works and miss the larger issue, which is that there is literally nothing that could possibly be wrong with the elements that can't be handled. And at a level of effort that is encountered all the time in home video. (And that includes finding that the negative has been chewed by rats or having no negative at all)

I think the people at paramount ran into a few problems with the film for TOS trek. It was pretty uncared for and they had to bake the film to preserve it or something.

But they did overcome the problems restoring it.

Yeah the Treks needed a lot of work, it had been handled a lot over 40 years of worldwide syndication. (And there was 80 hours of it to deal with instead of 6!)

Just read some of the commentaries on blu-ray-com - Apart from famous Kenkraly and his repetitive comments, seriously I can't stand anymore people, who believes Lucas lies that all original prints of SW are lost forever. Let's take a look on some of those comments:

It never ceases to amaze me at the shear ignorance of the "unaltered theatrical" anal retentive fanboys on this issue.

Don't you people get how the restored '97 SEs were made to begin with? And actually much more importantly, WHY? Because by '95 or '96 (whatever year they started work on them) the original prints were in such bad shape thaty they had to restore them then, or lose them forever. But because they were altered with new CG stuff and whatnot, the frames that included these new effects were only restored in this state...not in the original way. So the unaltered frames, even if they still existed, are in 15 years worse shape now than they were back then. And remember, we're talking '70s film stock, which wasn't the best film stock to ever grace the film world. And I'm mainly talking about ANH here.

Why do you think the "bonus feature" of the unaltered versions on the 2nd DVD release was just a port of the LD version? And no, I doubt there are some better prints of the unaltered film out there in some warehouse somewhere. Because if there was, don't you think they would have been used during the restoration in the first place?

I mean, com'on folks, use your noggin for something other than a hat rack!

Guys, I don't know. Does it even make sense to explain people that they are utterly wrong?

If you want to have fun on blu-ray.com I suggest you read the Star Wars related posts by Beast and Bluyoda.  Good stuff.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

That sort of "fun" leads to temporary insanity and unconsciousness. ;)

Well, I've been permanently insane for quite a while now, so I should have no problem ;)

My eyes! The goggles do nothing. (What's with that forum? You would think home theater enthusiasts would be more into getting quality product than anyone. Creeps.)

I've said it a thousand times before, but I will say it again. They only need to restore the parts that were altered and reinsert those back into the films. So the whole argument about it being too expensive to restore the original versions is ridiculous.

It would be nice to have some good news on May 4th, but I am not holding my breath.

Nah, I remember reading several months ago that the OT and PT blu-ray sets would be 4 discs each, with a bonus ninth disc in the "saga" set. Besides, even if Lucas actually intends to properly restore the original versions, he was never going to include it in this initial release. The guy from Wired magazine put it best back in September of '06, "they're not gonna make the fans happy because the happy fan has everything he or she needs."

At this rate, all I'm really curious about is how the double/triple/quadruple dips are gonna pan out. The 3D conversion of TPM hits theaters in february and I can only assume the business people at LFL have prescience and know this thing is gonna be a box office success, because it would be pretty embarrassing for them if it flopped after they said "we're going to convert all six movies and release them one per year."

By the way, when was the last time anyone heard anything about the live-action tv series???

Obviously, all I really care about is how all of this affects the original versions getting properly restored.

That's actually something I'm curious about. Despite some news saying that the individual sets are going to have a bonus disc each, StarWars.com keeps saying they will only have 3 discs total.

If they convert the films to 3D, they can release each film separately as some BD/3D/DVD/digital copy combo (think Disney), and then rerelease the GOUT on the reissue, and then by the third reissue they can finally have the OOT on BD, but it will be the GOUT up-converted to HD. They'll just release the same 6 movies every year, but conveniently miss the real anniversaries like they did in 2007. Fans expected a 30th anniversary release, but it never showed up because they decided to milk the dvd release of the OT. Bottom line, we will have to wait 20 years for the OOT that should have been in good quality 10 years ago. LFL is only in the business of milking SW beyond the point of business sense because the public is addicted to the OT.

I see your tune has changed from "WE WILL NEVER GET THE OOT" to "WE'LL GET THE OOT IN 20 YEARS"

But it still is years later than when they should have been released. In an ideal world, they should have been in our hands 10 years ago to modern video standards, not a bonus feature that is still stuck in the early 90s.

On another note, LFL is just a big drug cartel now (not literally!), they will make us see a bad movie wether we like it or not.

I still say this is how we will all experience the 1977 theatrical version - à la Soylent Green.

Maybe. But the truth of the matter is, LFL manipulates our nostalgia for these films to make us waste our time with utter shit. I know that is basically what all ad men basically do psychologically, but the quality of the PT and with them showing up in 3D next year, you know they are going to make a lot of money based on momentum. People still have warm, fuzzy memories about the OT, and anything associated with that nostalgia is going to be a hit.

It seems to me that GL was upset that he could not become a racer due to a near-death accident (why would he devote so much time in TPM to podracing?!). So I guess he made the whole SW franchise as a 40-year exercise in creating something we would unconditionally love, and then destroy it all in substance over this time as some sort of psychological transference in being denied his "true" vocation in life.

What about people who actually like the PT, and/or never saw Star Wars in theaters? The fanbase is not made only of nostalgic folks.

They still would not have existed had it not been for the fans of the OT. And the PT made so much money solely because of the nostalgia for the OT, fueled by cognitive dissonance. TPM set the precedent in blockbusters that you can make a profit despite a film's awfulness. When TPM3D comes out, there will be no doubt be a "critical rehabilitation" of the film, and people will go see it, thinking it is not as bad as they thought it was. TPM3D will sadly also usher in the death knell of traditional 2D films, just because of how much money it will make.
