Actually it is GForced GOUT beam and explosion rotoscoped onto an HD background plate.

As to the sources, I used Ady's 14GB 1080p MKV for Empire but the situation with SW is a bit different becuase only an AVCHD is available for Ady's version and 7,4GB is just not enough for 1080p and a lot of detail gets eaten up by compression, which can be clearly seen in this comparison which I posted on the previous page. So when using a high bitrate 720p source there should actually be more detail than in Ady's 1080p AVCHD. 

And as to the colour, it has recently come to light that the GOUT colours which Ady used as a reference for his colour correction are far too desaturated and not too close to the theatrical colouring (I'd say even more so with Empire than SW, even Ady himself says the colours in ESB:R will be quite different from his AVCHD version) so I'll try to bring the colours closer to theatrical (although in SW they won't be substantially different from Ady's).

Once these are complete, and they will be the absolute definitive versions to own regardless, I would fucking kill for a version that you tweak for accurate color timing and real-to-life skin tone Harmy.... Fucking kill for. They look killer as it is but with accurate color timing my eye would love that shit. The Despecialized alt. color timing editions if you will. I'd do it myself but I can't do the work you do, you're just too fucking good. Adjusting my set strictly for these releases seems tricky without a proper baseline and will likely vary greatly for each release. Everything is 110% excellent otherwise but I'm friggin sensitive to the oversaturation. I noticed in Empire despecialized there was a lot of pushing red, tweaked with faces. I never remember that kind of drastic alteration in color timing until Lucas' SE's.

The dirtbikke is still on the table Harmy.

@stinky: I don't think so, as I moved on to SW, I already deleted most of the source files for Empire and even so, I don't really want to make multiple versions of these. And as I said before the level of saturation is pretty much consistent throughout the movie, so if your main concern is the saturation, it can be easily fixed by your TV's or software player's settings. I actually just watched ESB on my HDTV and 1st I was horrified that  I totally screwed the colours up but then I tried a couple of different films and found out that the calibration was totally off on the TV.

@keyser: I'm afraid that the battle of Yavin won't be so super great, because aside from cutting in the G-Forced GOUT, there's not much I can do with it, which means it should look decent but it won't be as good as if they made a proper transfer of it. It should sound awesome with hairy_hen's mix though.

I'm not really expecting it to look as great as an actual 4k transfer from 35 mm elements, but I'm sure it'll look pretty damn good compared to the GOUT DVD.  And yes, I'm sure it will indeed sound awesome with that sound mix.

Hey, guys, I just wanted to make it clear that when I said I was using GForced GOUT, what I really meant was I was using Dark_Jedi's (or Mattman Omega's - just for the Alderaan shot so far) 720p upscales, which they kindly offered to make available to me prior to release. GForced GOUT was a faulty label, because both scripts have been heavily modified for the 720p upconversion, I apologise and I'll make sure that everyone who contributed to this project will get credit for their work (if you check out the comparison presentation I made for Empire, you'll see that I gave details on what sources were used for every shot and I plan to do the same here).

it's your project but might i suggest not deleting the source files when you're done.  You could always go back and make things that weren't quite perfect better.  And I don't think fans would hold it against you if you released multiple versions of increasing quality.  Who knows what could be released by other preservationists in the future that could make your despecialized edition even more awesome. 

Don't get me wrong, I did of course save the despecialized shots in uncompressed AVI for future Blu-Ray sourced release, I just deleted the replaceable source files such as Ady's MKV converted to 25fps or the SD shadowfiles I was using. It would just be too much of a hassle to convert everything again and redo the cut and the colours and then the encoding itself took like two days, I'm just not doing that again when all that the people who don't like the colours need to do is turn down the saturation on their TVs. I don't want to be an ass about it, I'm just very impatient and it's just really frustrating for me to do these things. But I'll gladly redo it if a decidedly better source becomes available.

Harmy, I just wanted to tell you that watching your ESB Despecilized on my 110" screen HD projector was one of the best movie experiences I’ve had in my life. Finally an HD Empire the way I remember it from my childhood! *tears up* I will tell every Star Wars fan I meet about it.

I absolutely can't wait for you to finish the other two. I anticipate them even more that Adywan's Revisited series even though I mostly loved ANH Revisited.

I was wondering if you are going to bring the scene with R2 while he's stalked by Jawas back to 'day time' as it was originally in ANH. Also are you also putting back in the red sky with 3po and Luke at the Lars homestead? Thanks in advance.

The R2 canyon scene will be slightly brighter than in the SE but not as bright as on the GOUT as all evidence seems to point towards that being a 1993 colour-timing error.

As to the red sky, I'm not quite sure yet. I will definitely not be putting back most of the sky backgrounds where they were replaced (as the quality of the GOUT is mostly pretty bad and the difference isn't usually so big) but this one is quite a considerable alteration to the mood of the scene, so I'll have to test it out first.

Here's a test if the Luke and 3PO scene could be done just trough colour correction and here is a comparrison with the 2004 colours.

 Well that looks great so far (I’m comparing it with my GOUT DVD right now) but I would tone down the reds a bit. Compare it yourself you will see that even though the sky is redder the rest of the image is not. As for the close up shot where Luke starts to say "its too dangerous..." That sky shot is totally different and requires a very red sunset.

Have you considered using a high resolution scan of a similar sunset and composite it in? It’s a very short shot.

Yeah, but don't forget that the GOUT is wrong, you need to pump up the saturation to see the real colours. But that red sky shot might need more tweaking. Although I'm not sure it's worth rotoscoping around the characters. We'll see.

I agree with Stinky and Lando Lakes, watch the saturation Harmy. You are the greatest man who ever lived (Jesus included), and your on the verge of the greatest accomplishment in human history (the moon landing & assless chaps included). The only thing that makes me say this is when I look at the skin tones, they look a bit too orange in the test shots. I take that back, how dare I. I swear to god you're the best. You do whatever you want with the saturation. Checking in on this thread is the highlight of my day. My boyfriend is all "Are you looking at that Harmy thread again", and I'm all "Jesus Christ all you do is nag!" He just doesn't get it, women (and old queens) just don't appreciate Star Wars or anything else super cool.

Actually, in this particular clip, I toned the saturation down compared to the 2004SE, but due to brightening the picture up the colours shine through more clearly. And Rob, I love how gay you are about everything but enough with the praises, you're embarrasing me :-D

It's a side effect of the incantation he does to make the GOUT look HD ;)
