Well, the second part was a What If scenario, but I agree with you about the other one. The guy did mess up, but maybe Vader was just too distracted at the time.

a tracer? they werent instructed to destroy the MF, thats the entire idea, they were just supposed to make them think they were being chased.

Yes, but the point was not whether he was ordered to capture "life forms", he was supposed to make sure no one got the Stolen Plans about the Death Star.

I mean, why couldn't Leia have put the plans on an empty escape pod (or with some droids)? I'd never allow anything to get out, even if it was an "empty" escape pod...

About the TIE's, what if one of them "accidently" destroyed the MF? The pilots were instructed to not destroy it, and let them go? If so, they were sent into a suicide mission?

yes, but they are clones, they are void of feelings when vader gives them an order, or they were "ordered" by vader.
