It's not really worth it, I think it's mostly just that creepy mix of kids and grim Star Wars zealots now. When a grown man uses the phrase "hate speech" for people clowning on Episode II, you know that guy must be a real barrel of laffs.

Could we get an extended credits bonus feature with all these threats?  I luvz da stuff.  Seeing how far fandom goes awry, and the wacky places they travel to.

Death threats?! Did someone break into their houses, and swap out their DVD's for fanedits or something? Jeebus!

As passionate as I am about the OT, and it's influence on my life, at the end of the day it's a set of movies, not some creepy ass cult. "Fans" like that make me embarrassed to be a Star Wars fan.

It was similar schenanigans that have made me keep a safe distance from Star Trek fandom for decades now.

This makes me remember some guy that got a cut in the neck after saying he liked digital Yoda.

^Thanks. Someone needs to collect these stories in a blog along with horror stories the cast and crew sometimes have with fandom.

I once tried to explain the merits of digital effects to a kid on line at a comic book store. He slashed my neck with a Magic: The Gathering card protected within a thick mylar sleeve. I still bare the scare to remind me to keep my mouth shut. I learned a valuable lesson that day—people take the Star Wars universe very, very seriously. Why, just minutes before the incident I was having a civil discussion with my attacker about abortion rights. We disagreed by the guy didn't raise a finger, I mention the fact that I like digital Yoda and BAM, I wake up in the hospital.

So he was having a discussion about "abortion rights" with which his "attacker" disagreed with his views and starts on about how he likes digital Yoda and then the guy attacks him . More like he was being a prick and this guy just had enough. sounds to me like he was just after an argument. he doesn't give any proper details about what happened and what lead up to this

I stopped reading his article after this:

Empire Strikes Back is more or less universally accepted as the best of the Star Wars series. I agree that it is the best film with the word Star Wars in the title. I would, however, argue (against my better judgment) that it is actually the worst Star Wars film. It’s too realistic, too emotionally centred, too well acted, too well structured, and too empathetic. It's a real movie, with real characters that an audience really cares for.

And there we have it. The type of person who thinks the prequels are a brilliant trilogy of films.

ESB- Everything about it is good= worse movie:
PT - Everything about them is crap = best movies.

TFN used to be an okay place. It had its ups and downs and there were a lot of controversies and rivalries and its always been insanely over-modded to the point of censorship, but you didn't have to look far to find interesting discussion, and there were lots of cool people there, even if you didn't agree with their views. Increasingly, its become a colony of creepy Lucas and Prequel Apologists who can't accept anything contrary to their own perfect little bubble, and the discussion is just awful. A lot of the more intelligent posters slowly drifted elsewhere because of all the weird zealots there. I'm sure you can still find some generally intelligent topics there, but sifting through the all the crap its buried in....it's just a different place than it used to be. It's weird and unpleasant to be there now, and this is from someone whose username bears a 1999 registry and has racked up thousands of posts there. The official forums were sort of like this, and its the reason I never made a single post there, and now I feel like in the last year or two TFN has become like this. Its sad, because I miss good SW discussion and liked that TFN had so many members, there used to always be a couple good threads active in every board.

Does anyone know what happened there? I know the Bashers Sanctuary closed down in 2006 or so, but a lot of its members still posted there for years. I remember there used to be a lot of people who knew a lot of interesting things about the series and had very intelligent opinions, not necessarily "bashers" or "gushers" but just regular, intelligent Star Wars fans. I don't know where these people went, but I've barely posted there for like two years and whenever I go back I realize why this is. I feel like it never used to be this extreme.

The writer also goes on to express his appreciation of his sponsor.  There's a lot of history back there.  The page is a fascinating annecdote.  Which people will use for whatever purpose.

I know the Bashers Sanctuary closed down in 2006

Was this a separate forum, or something inside b.tf.n?

TFN was known for its staunch anti-bashing mod policies and a lot users there got away with a double standard with regards to persecuting critical posters, and there was even a group that called itself "The PT Defence Force" or something that just went around looking for posts to defend the PT whenever someone was criticising it. So, someone suggested that there could be a thread there called the Bashers Sancturary where people could just discuss the films in a critical way or just plain bash them, without anyone going after them. In 2006 some new mods finally decided to close it, along with the purging of a lot of its members,  and so eventually Outerimsieges.com started their own Basher's Sanctuary with a lot of the main posters from the TFN thread.

I was about to post the same response to the same two choice excerpts! :-)

Nobody gets slashed in the neck for liking something different. You get slashed in the neck for being a jackass and pushing someone's buttons until they snap. Doesn't make it okay to cause injury, but there is clearly more to this story than he's letting on.

As for his "analysis" of Empire, I don't even... there are no words.

Author
Time

Also...he slashed him with a Magic: The Gathering card. I mean, "slashing", come on. He pestered some random guy in the line about abortion, and probably other things, finally started making utterly inane comments about how video game Yoda is better than the most lifelike puppet in movie history before the guy finally shoved him aside with a nerdy playing card, which cut him. This turns into "I got slashed in the neck by an OTer and had to go the hospital because I like the prequels," sounds like a fairly one-sided story, would be interesting to hear from the other dude how it went down.

Author
Time

Also, is this like some sort of hipster Star Wars fan? He like the prequels because he finds their poor quality ironically amusing while the "traditionally" good ESB bores him? This is hardly an endorsement of the films when you admit they suck and are inferior to the OT (yet this is supposedly the very reason they are better than the OT in a nonesenical circular argument).

I hope that doesn't happen here on OT.com. Otherwise the cause for preserving the OOT is doomed. I heard you get banned from TFN if you don't like the PTSE.

So what other SW forums have people migrated here from?

Which ones are gone?

I find it really strange just how blinkered some people can be.

You got to link to some of those threads. I got to read those.

That place really became nutty during the lead up to Episode II. Everyone and everything had become hypersensitive because of Episode I.

People took up sides. The fanbase became polorized.

There were places to vent about Episode I, but the TFN forums and the forum over at the official site were not among them.

I remember very well the "gushers" vs the "bashers" on TFN. I guess I was in the middle of the road by that point (just before Episode II), but I started finding myself more on the side of the bashers than the gushers. I started realizing by reading the gushers that the EU as a whole didn't make sense. There was no "grand vision". TFN actually started me down the path that you all helped me to crystallize.

What's a Prequel Apologist anyway? And why don't they apologize for the Prequels?

EDIT: Here it is.

Have I missed some sort of joke here? I read that article a few years ago and took it to be a tongue-in-cheek look at the prequels. Maybe I'm being naive but the author seemed to use humour (perhaps misplaced) to mock PT gushers.

That's my interpretation, it might be wrong. I personally wouldn't use it as evidence that the author is a PT nut.

Edit: Sorry, just read the comment section of the article and the author himself admits it was a joke. Now I need to know if you guys knew it was a joke and where playing along or if you just over reacted?

I could tell it was some tongue in cheek stuff the second I saw that Empire comment posted above.

Ahhh the spoiler days.  remember X-boards and Aldera.net. geez it's been awhile. Was PrequelSpoilers the one who got the AotC Mace-Jango showdown boards from the Grandpa who found them in the trash can?  good times.

Got most of my SW fill from a CutScene groups on egroups (currently groups.Yahoo!) so mostly lurkered for spoilers.

I think so. Those got passed around quite a bit. I remember that it looked like a much longer, more extensive fight than what we ended up getting.

Darth Psychotic gave a lot of stuff to the X-Boards from the run up to Episode II before he started up millenniumfalcon.com for the run up to Episode III.

SI used to hang at TFN Boards quite a bit for some reason.?

Taylor had his updates at Aldera with what was basically a scene-by-scene text breakdown of Episode II with commentary. I think text in green was what we already knew. Pinkish red was new stuff or theory. I remember that I used to print them out. LOL.

Crazy days.
