What are you reading?

I looked through the board - okay, the first six pages - and didn't find a thread like this, so here it is. What are you reading right now?

I'm reading:

It's three novels in one book, I think it's fantasy although I don't know much about it. I only started a couple nights ago. I picked it up used, and I liked the first couple pages so I bought it.

I think TheBoost already did a thread on this.

It only got past a couple pages...

Well, I'm not trying to win any contests. ;-)

Just curious what others are reading.

"Bullet for a Half-Breed." It's a western. After reading so many star wars novels its nice to read something more earthly.

Indiana Jones and the Dance of the Giants- I read a few other Indy novels, but have started picking up the ones I missed.

I like what few of the McGregor novels I've read, but I feel his Indy is too different from the films. He ends up coming of as being unlikable, and he curses like an immature child, Indy cursed, but not every mother f**king scene.

I read Indiana Jones and the Army of the Dead by Steve Perry and I thought it was terrible, the perspectives of 4 characters destroyed any tension and suspense, because you would forget and Indy kept talking about fixing his hat. Steve Perry leaves little room for imagination, and likes to trail off. He also likes to try to outsmart the reader. Steve Perry also tries to explain the spiritualistic sides of everything, where as we should be with Indy the whole time being oblivious to it all. He literally sucked every ounce of fantasy from the book, and it wound up becoming a war novel over an Indy novel.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Almost done with it too.  It's not the greatest novel ever written, but some really good philosophy and such.

Which is your favorite? I never considered reading an Indy novel, but now I'm intrigued.

I love that book. First read it when I was 12 and it really stuck with me. I've read it a few times since, and yes, it's not the best novel, but it is a great tale and has the feeling of timelessness that draws you back to it like a good story should.

Funny, I read The Alchemist at about that age too. Read it again when I was a freshmen in high school - both times required. Enjoyed the story both times.

Currently reading Grapes of Wrath.

I read a couple of those too. Of the ones I've read "Indiana Jones and the hollow earth" was my favorite. (I think that's what it was called its been a few years.)

Right now I'm reading a graphic novel called: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I like it so far.

I've got a few books on the go that i've sort of trailed off on - The fifth Elephant [Discworld] and Eyes of the dragon by stephen King.

The last thing I finished was probably Under the Dome by Stephen King which was great - it had about eleventy main characters and didn't become a complete mess.

No idea what it was called but i did read an Indiana Jones novel years ago - I thought it sucked but I still read it cover to cover - he went looking for Noah's ark.

That reminds me, I also started reading the graphic novel Duncan The Wonder Dog.

It's definitely one of the most unique things I've ever read, from a story and art standpoint. It popped up on just about every best comics of 2010 list, and the first and second printings sold out instantly. The publisher, AdHouse,  isn't planning to print any more, so I was lucky to snag a copy directly from them. Secondhand copies are going for upwards of $100 on Amazon Marketplace. Kind of insane.

I was pretty impressed, the box included a free comic anthology, some stickers, bookmarks, and a little print hand-signed by Adam Hines, the author of Duncan.

EDIT: looks like AdHouse has put 13 copies up on Amazon for $17 a pop. I highly recommend grabbing one while you can.

Adam Hines put the whole thing online for free while it's out of print. You can read it here.

How is it? PKD is the one author I'm always meaning to read, but never do.

It's no Blade Runner, but it has it's moments.

My buddy just finished reading it. He said, "i didn't like it a whole lot. i felt like it was a cool idea, but not very well executed. could be because it was his first book, but i felt like he didn't develop the characters well enough. i found myself not really pulling for any of the characters. it kinda felt like a vonnegut novel at first, but then it kinda just became mundane and tedious." That launched a big conversation about Vonnegut.

I agree with a lot of that above statement, but I think I like it a little more than your bud did.

I read this last summer (after finally seeing BR) and I concur.  I've heard, however, that Dick has better books anyway.

EDIT: I've read about half of Vonnegut's book, he's my favorite author, hands down.  Only Tolkien comes close.

A modern telling of Dracula, set in the world of post 9/11 TV news. It's got some scary writing, some weird/creepy concepts mixing vampirism, memetic spread, and computer viruses in a trippy kinda way. I'm digging it so far, about 2/3 in.
