That is NOT a "problem", motti!

Gene Roddenberry made them purposely look all humanoid, because that was his vision, and the people who took over after his death honor that Star Trek tradition.

There is an episode that explains that fact. But this is a SW site, not ST so I won't bore you all with the details.

BTW HHG is -not- silly. Maybe you were talking about the TV series, which I agree was rather silly in places, but the book is pure brilliance. The way Douglas Adams could come up with a theory to prove that a spaceship could be powered by an italian resteraunt (if I recall correctly) that was thouroughly absurd, completely logical and utterly hilarious all at the same time... such a shame that he went before his time.

Yes, there is -- in TNG. All humanoid races in Star Trek derive from the same DNA that was spread on planets throughout the entire galaxy by an doomed ancient alien race.

> HGG

I only know the tv series, so I'm not qualified to give any judgment regarding Douglas Adams or the novel.

True, Samatar. I mean, it was a 60s TV show, what else could they do?

And Doc, please, read the books!

That was my belief.

I loved Hitchhiker's Guide. Only have read the first book in the series. But it was great. Meaning to read the rest of them since they're sitting on my bookshelf. May get around to them this summer once my class is done.

Exactly the same situation here, Bossk.

I've got a hardcover edition with all the HH books in one. Really nice, save for the typo on the spine of the book.

It is a typo. The book title has the character name Zaphoid in it. And the actual book inside has that name. However, the spine spells it "Zaphod" without the "i".

Does it contain all five books in the "trilogy"?

Ironically enough... yes.

Some would argue that it's just another one of Adams' jabs.

HG: There are five books in all, three written as a trilogy and then two more added at seperate times later on. FOr some reason the TV series only covers the first two, although the third was released at the time I think? Or maybe not? As for what it's about... that's a bit tricky. Basically it's about a man who discovers his best friend is actually an alien when his friend rescues him moments before the earth is destroyed to make way for an interplanetary bypass route (they "hitch a ride" on one of the demolition fleet ships, hence the name). But I think the story is really just a setting for the author to excercise his brilliant wit and absurd views on life, the universe and everything (which incidently is the name of the third book in the series). I have read them all, plus one or two others by Adams, and I would thoroughly recommend at least reading the first one; if you don't like it, however, it's probably not worth bothering with the others.

Uh doesn't the name come from that "book" thing Arthur used, the "hitchhikers guide..."?
These books have created a lot of obscure references around the world: 42, "Paranoid Android" (radiohead), Babel Fish (altavista).

"You'll like the bypass"
"Oh shut up."

I've never read the books (but want to), but I've seen the movie and loved it.

The movie? I know there's a TV series of it, didn't know about a movie. There will be a movie, but apparently they're going to ruin it. They'll add a new character, and mess up with the original story...

And dumb it down, just like every other recent remake.

I'll stand in front of the movie theater, with 1000 copies of the book, seeling those for the same price as the ticket to see the movie, yelling: "Don't watch this crap! Buy the book! Read something for a change! It's better! Don't let Hollywood dumb you down, read the book!"

They never learn, do they? They take a book which is enormously popular, completely change it and then wonder why the movie is a flop...

But how often are they truly "flops"? Not very. You always have someone interested. Even the worst ideas have some kind of audience. Enough that a sequel at least crosses their minds.
