We had a playground game called Apple Sauce which was basically British Bulldog but played with a cooking apple.

I've finally bit the bullet and got a console upgrade.

I've entered a new age of Sony gaming and have finally got a Playstation 2.

Any recommendations as to essential games to play and essential games to avoid?

Frink, since you seem to still enjoy the retro era, I was wondering, do you have any experience with tinkering with old computers?

Nope.

But have you seen this?

Essential games for the Playstation 2? You're talking about a console with one of the largest and most well-rounded game libraries ever, you're gonna need to give a bit of info on your tastes first...

The only game type that wouldn't really interest me at all is sports sims (including skateboarding and routine racing games).

I guess my favorite game types are quest based adventures (especially those of a dark nature so Silent Hill style games are a plus).

I have already got the first four Silent Hill Games and the two God Of War games for the console but I'd be interested in overall well crafted games of most types.

Lego Star Wars I have for the Gamecube.

I imagine I will get the Final Fantasy games as I have all the FF games released on the PSone.

I just wish you'd play online when Frink comes to visit.

I mean, when you get to the Xbox 360/Japanese PS3 part of your gaming lifecycle.  Oh man, you're going to love this in 20 years.

Tempting...  but I don't have time to play the games I have now.

And is that Pong: Game of the Year edition, or just regular?  If GOTY, does it have all of the DLC on the Disc?  Or is it just download codes?

Did anyone here ever play 'Pong Kombat'?  It's exactly what it sounds like.

Also- C3PX- Someone (not me) got you playing BS2 multiplayer, eh?  I've currently traded my BS2 to a friend for his ACBrotherhood.  Are you enjoying it any more than you did before?  After level 20, I figured I had seen what there was to see... but I'd enjoy playing it again if I I knew someone going through it as well.  What level are you at and are you going to keep playing?

And Borderlands- tons of fun!

I recognize most of this post as being in English, but I still need it translated.  ;-)

Yay! Sounds like me on here several years back. The PS2 was my reintroduction to gaming after years of having no interest. I asked for recommendations in this very thread, and was suggested some pretty good ones.

-Shadow of the Colossus (highly recommended)

-Ico (if you play Shadow of the Colossus and like it, then this is worth tracking down)

-Giants: Citizen Kabuto (love this game! Original, fun, ridiculous, and usually only a couple of bucks at used game places in the States. PC version is superior, but not for much reason other than censorship, PC was rated M but PS2 version was clipped down to a T)

-Half-Life (If you like first person shooters, this is one of my all time favorites, though pretty archaic today... but then again you did just now finally purchase a PS2)

-Resident Evil 4 (though the GC version has better graphics)

-Bully (I am not a fan of Grand Theft Auto, which is basically what this game is, but with bicycles and school yard pranks, but I still found the game pretty fun)

-Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 (If you are into these kinds of games, these are a lot of fun)

-Two Towers and Return of the King (these are actually really fun slash em up arcade games. Nothing super spectacular, but these are usually a type of game I don't appreciate at all and I really loved these)

-Okami (always highly recommended to me, unfortunately I never bought it until I already had my 360 and have yet to even play it. But, it looks pretty amazing and I've heard no end to reports that it is, so I feel pretty safe in recommending it)

Awesome! Glad you like Borderlands. What does the wife think of it? (I assume you are playing through it with her?) Aside from Lego games, it is so far my all time favorite "date" game. One of the few games I have gotten every single achievement in, because it is just that good (those Mad Moxxi achievements suck though!)

Actually, it was you that got me playing BS2 multiplayer. Last time we played Reach together we talked about Protector Trials and BS2 multiplayer, but if you recall I told you I had loaned my copy to a friend. Ever since that conversation I had been looking forward to a chance to play it again, and just now got my copy back and had a chance to do so.

Just reached level 10, can't see myself going much higher than that though. BS2's multiplayer really highlights what a horrible first person shooter Bioshock actually is. Fortunately, Bioshock is much, much more than just a first person shooter and really shines as what it is, which is all you see in the campaign. But when you are playing a typical rip off of a generic first person shooter multiplayer mode, it really highlights how much the first person shooter aspect pales.

I enjoyed the BioShockisms of it.  I liked hacking stuff, taking pictures of stuff, and the sounds and the looks.

Also- becoming a big daddy in MP is pretty sweet.  Finally a chance to get a good K/D ratio.

I'm not terribly into competitive MP, so maybe I'm not a good judge.  But I quite enjoyed it up til level 20.

Anyways- I've played BL (what's the short version of Borderlands?) with my zombie friend, and then recently with My wife's brother-in-law's brother.  I actually think (maybe ridiculously) that my wife will somehow fall for this game.  So I think I'll get to start another character with her.

And maybe you and I can play sometime.  You know, when you start a new character.  On a date.

Ocarina of Time has been my favorite video game since I first beat it when I was twelve, that is, until a couple of summers ago when I played Bioshock for the first time.  That game is what all video games should aim to be.  Amazing.  It's better than most movies.

 (Edited)

I might have to keep playing BS and try to make it to level twenty (being a sucker for achievements and all). I still haven't gotten the Save a Little Sister one, wasn't near good enough to get even close, and I still don't have play a match on each original map, as bad as I am at it, it may take me until level twenty to get those.

Sure, BL is an acceptable shorthand for Borderlands in my book, from now on when BL is used we'll know what we are talking about. BL is very simple and it is really fun running around around the world assassinating people and killing skags with the woman you love. Or with anyone you don't mind spending time with in general. Excellent multiplayer, don't think I could ever enjoy it alone though. Having more than two people (never done it) could be a lot of fun too. I actually think I have a level 11 character and a level 17 character lying around somewhere on my hard drive, I'd be able to play with you with one of those guys without killing the balance of the game.

What character class are you? My main character is the berserker. I think my level 17 is the hunter. If the sequel ever gets made, the characters being more customizable would be nice.

Bioshock is a must have.  Portal is great too.

I don't have a 360 myself (nintendo fan here) but these are two games I would definitely get if I had one.

Yay! I have a few codes for 48 hours of Xbox Live, if you do end up getting any chances to play with us, I can always email you one of those. I think I have at least 3. You'll probably get a few yourself, seems like a lot of online games come with them. Also, I think every Xbox Live Silver membership (the free ones) can opt for a one month free trial of Gold. Not to mention, if you really like Gold you can usually score a year of it for $30 if you look hard enough. I think the most I ever paid was $35. Personally, without internet hooked up to my Xbox and XBL Gold, I probably wouldn't ever even turn it on.

What type of games do you like? I'd highly recommend Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Bioshock. FO3 and BS are FPS games, but only in that they are first person perspective and you are holding a gun, BS is technically an FPS with RPG elements, and FO3 is basically just a real time RPG with a first person perspective.

Portal, again an FPS but not really, a puzzle game above all else (on sale on XBL for 600 msp this week, regular price is 1200), is a ton of fun. Or you can pick up The Orange Box for around $10 these days which includes Portal along with Half-Life 2 and its expansions as well as Team Fortress 2. Though not being into FPS, Half-Life 2 isn't going to do much for you.

Mirrors Edge is another FPS that is really not an FPS, that I really loved. While you can take bad guys guns and shoot them in the game, there is really little shooting involved. There is actually an achievement that challenges you to beat the game without firing a single shot, which is the way I played through it. It is very much its own game and take a bit to figure out, which is why I think a lot of people play the demo for five minutes and write it off of their list for good. Took me a bit to learn and get into, but once I did I was very happy I gave it my time.

Looking through my games I realize that everything I own on the 360 is an FPS other than Bully, GTA IV, Assassins Creed, Assassins Creed II, Plants vs. Zombies, Watchmen: The End is Nigh, and my girlfriend's Lego games. And humorously, with the exception of the Lego games, that non-FPS list also happens to be the list of games I own that I have never beaten, so obviously, none of those are my favorites.
