Duel of the Fates (* unfinished project *) — Page 7

Well I'm cutting most of the antics. This is where it's becoming tough, As of right now Jar-Jar says maybe 2 words the entire movie. He's just... there. He doesn't have a role in anything. And maybe that's my problem, I haven't him anything to do, but there isn't really anything for him to do. I've removed all of the other gungans and their battle at the end, so his purpose is gone. It's like the edit suffers from him having nothing to do, but it will suffer if I put things back in.

I wish there was a way to just totally remove him. I do have an HD source, but I don't think its feasible to crop him from every single shot.

It might be possible to roto him out, the only scenes I would think were complicated would be everything in Watto's shot... Too much going on... Would be very hard to remove him...

I don't have much success with Roto so far, haha. Anybody good with that that can do it rather painlessly? I'll crop/edit him out whenever possible. He really isn't very present. That would be the best end result, to remove him entirely.

What if Qui-Gon hires Jar-Jar as a guide when they reach Tattooine? Jar-Jar leads them to Watto's shop. Later, Jar-Jar sells them out to Sidious, and stays on Tattooine, never to be seen in the story again.

It gives him a story purpose for existing, and gives Sidious a reason to send Maul there. I don't know how I can make it work, as I'll need to create a scene where Jar-Jar sells them out. Hmmmm...

There's only two ways I can see Jar-Jar functioning in this film:

1. The idea described above, where I try to manipulate it so that Jar-Jar sells the Jedi out to Sidious.

2. Somebody helps me rotoscope him out of the shots I can't crop and he just gets cut altogether.

I don't know how realistic either idea is, but that's all I've got right now. I know that I don't want what I have right now, which is a random character walking around with the main characters not saying or doing anything.

The best solution would be to remove Jar Jar, but that sounds like a lot of work.

The idea of Jar Jar as a betrayer is interesting. And it actually makes more sense than the supposed "trace" that allows Maul to track them to Tatooine.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeah, but I don't know how I could create a scene of Jar Jar contacting Sidious/Maul about it.

What I'm hoping is that what little remains of Jar Jar can be rotoscoped. Basically the wide shots are the problem, specifically as they are walking into Mos Espa. Those shots have a bit of camera movement that might make it extremely difficult. But I could always find a way to remove that shot.

Any brave rotoscopers out there?

I see what ur doing now, thought you could keep the scene where Qui gon meets Jar Jar - but if all thats gone now hmm...

So in case you cant roto him out... could you add the audio of him introducing him self to qui gon from that scene on naboo and put it somewhere while the're all on the queen's transport?

where he says "Mesaa your humble servant" - might come across like he's an assistant to the queen while on the starship...or something... not sure where you'd put it tho

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

Yeah, it's all cool ideas. The problem is, as it was with ROTJ, that the material to make it into what I want is very limited.

Well this is really messing up my Zen. I feel weird moving on to Part II and III full steam without figuring out this Jar Jar business.

As far as what I have done of Part II, removing Kamino/Jango as the Clone model is working really, really nicely. Basically, Obi-Wan takes the poison dart to the droids in the Temple (a deleted scene from the movie) and a new voice over has the droid identify it as a poison native to Geonosis. Obi-Wan flies there to investigate. I also think it helps Jango's character a little by having him just be a random Bounty Hunter working for Dooku. This also means I've removed Boba from the movie as well. Jango is the silent badass just like, funny enough, Boba Fett was!

To get your mojo back you could remove episode 1 and just include fights and the shots of ship, droids - planet establishing shots etc.... that way you remove jarjar and little annie!

theres always a plan b :)

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

I have actually toyed with doing TPM entirely in narration, but there's a few things I don't like about that.

1. I like the lead-in of Vader intercepting Leia's ship above Tattooine leading to him thinking about Tattooine which leads us into the story well.

2. I don't want to lose Darth Maul/Qui-Gon. They are important to the story.

I'm going to start playing with some rotoscoping ideas. I don't know how that will turn out, I'm terrible with effects programs. But it's going to  make the edit that much better.

This talk of rotoscoping Jar Jar reminds me of an issue ADigitalMan was having on an edit of Superman 3. He was trying to remove Richard Pryor from a certain shot, but was having major problems getting the background to match. I believe Darth Editous was able to write some kind of script that successfully removed Pryor. You might want to contact the 2 of them to see if they can help in any way.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Also, I think Antimatter rotoscoped Jar Jar out of his prequel edit...then again, he's not exactly the most helpful of folks around these parts...

Hmm... thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can get in touch with any of them.

I am interested for that.. got more info?

Maybe Spence can use his work with his aurorisation to get the jar jar free shots he want

Yes, I'd like to see if I can get permission to use that as well, but I'd like to see what the results look like.

Trying some new music tracks for the Darth Maul fight. So far O Fortuna by Orff and Pruit Igoe by Phillip Glass are my favorites.

As much as it seems weird to remove Duel of the Fates from an edit titled Duel of the Fates, I wanted to try and reserve that song for things relating to Anakin. I want it to be emotionally tied to him and important things that happen to him. Basically it should play when he is fighting with himself. Since he has nothing to do with the Maul fight, something similar in sound but not that song seems appropriate. I want to keep that choral/pagan sort of sound for it. If possible, I'd like to make Maul seem even more ferocious and terrifying.

As of right now, I have the fight broken up into two sections. The first section takes us through to the ray shield hall way, the second takes us through the ray shields reopening to the death of Darth Maul. It's broken up by a heavily shortened space battle sequence where Anakin purposefully flies into the Droid ship an destroys it. The fight is much faster, many of the longest camera shots and wide shots are shortened or deleted to give the thing a ferocious speed. Basically it comes off that the only way Obi-Wan defeats Maul is because he became more intense, more angry, and more ferocious. He gives into the dark side to finish Maul off. Obi-Wan falling into the pit is removed, he just gets the upper hand with his attacks and splits him in half. It's pretty darn cool. I've not seen anybody edit the battle in that way, where the dynamics of it are changed slightly to give it a different impact. I'm very happy with the sequence.

Something else I'm playing with is should I include the scene of Palpatine and Maul talking. It's nice exposition as to what is going on with the Sith, but at the same time having Maul be a silent, unstoppable force of nature may be much more effective. Thoughts?

Project started here:

But was moved here:

You'll probably need to sign up in order to ask for permission.  He's not exactly the most popular dude either here or on FE.org, and I think the feeling is mutual (especially at FE.org) so you might want to avoid mentioning the sites.

By the way, I don't have any links to the project but I do have a copy.  I could upload if you guys want.

Want! I would like to at least see how it turned out before I ask about permission.

I know this is off topic, but I really, really hope that things can get sorted out with Adywan if this is in fact not an April fools joke.

Ady's projects have brought many people to these forums and introduced them to many of our projects both here and on FE.org. He has been a huge help to me in the past in completing some of my projects, graciously taking time away from his work to answer my silly noob questions. Banning Adywan from OT is sort of like banning Mickey Mouse from Disneyland. He's one of the main attractions.

If this is all a joke, then Ady just take that as a tribute to how important you are to the site and how we appreciate you. If it's not a joke, then know I fully disagree with the mods on this one, and I bet a lot of other people feel the same way.

And I know I may get a warning for this based on it being off topic and anti-moderator; if that's the case then so be it.

BANNED!!! :p

I'm 100% convinced it's a joke.  If I'm wrong, I'll eat my (dunce) hat.

I'm really really hoping so, but it's a little too convincing for my liking.
