If I wanted to see what Vietnam was really like I'd watch a documentary or read a book.  Speaking of, the book Tiger Force, about a platoon in Vietnam that got way out of hand, is really good.  Two writers from my local paper (The Toledo Blade) won the Pulitzer for investigative reporting for it.

Full Metal Jacket is amazing, as is any Kubrick movie.  He's the greatest filmmaker of all time in my book, and 2001: A Space Odyssey is my favorite movie of all time.

The thing I love about Apocalypse is that it doesn't care to be an "accurate" depiction of Vietnam.

Batman Forever. I still love this movie, warts and all.

Me and my dad just finished watching Full Metal Jacket.

Since he was in Vietnam way back then, he was pretty critical of the film's not being very realistic to what actually happened.

I think that Kubrick wasn't trying to make it a war film.

It was a character study.

Still, he thought it was okay.

My rating:

10/10 (one of my new favorites)

My 1960's History professor, who was in Vietnam, insisted that every Vietnam movie except for We Were Soldiers is complete shit that doesn't capture what it was really like.

Funny, my Dad also thinks that We Were Soldiers is the most accurate to what it was like too!

Besides, who cares if it's accuate or not?

If the film was 100% true to what happened in every way, it wouldn't be as good a film, would it?

The Killers

Girl meets guy, guy doesn't tell her he used to be CIA assassin, they get married, guy gets contacted by his old boss, all of their neighbors try to to kill them.

[SPOILERS-RANT]
Girl's dad was behind it. Turns out he used to be a CIA assassin too, and was afraid that the guy would try to kill him someday. So he planted other assassin's into their life that he could activate on a moment's notice. Girl's dad was so concerned with his own safety that he literally put his wife and daughter into the line of fire. And how does the plot get resolved? They literally sit down and admit the truth, and no one brings up the fact that he didn't say "hey, hired killers I put in my daughter's life: try not to kill her or my wife, I'm not that much of a jerk." No, they all live happily ever after.[/SPOILERS-RANT]

But anyway, the movie seemed like it never really got going. It just started, then stopped some time later.

"Gladiator"

A big part of this movie bothered me that I'd never thought of before.

Emperor Marcus Aurelies says "I've been tyrant my whole life, and after enjoying a life of absolute power, I've decided that having absolute power is wrong. I'm not going to do anything about it, but after I die, I'd like someone else to change the system back to a Republic."

What a jerk!

And who does he pick to do it? General Maximus! A guy with no politics, experience, or apparently even political awareness is supposed to somehow reform centuries of corruption? AT BEST he could lead his loyal armies into Rome and stage a military coup. I don't see that ending well for Rome or the Republic.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Bicentennial Man

300

Inglourious Basterds

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

Sucker Punch.

Been getting awful reviews. Saw it in an empty theater on a weekend evening. And even out of the few movie goers in the room, a number of them got up and left during the movie.

It wasn't anything spectacular, but I enjoyed it far more than I could ever imagine enjoying a typical popular action flick (which I don't even bother to watch). I think it had more merit as a film than the majority of the tripe that gets released these days.

People actually walked out!?  Gotta say I don't think I've ever seen that before, especially at the prices they charge for movies these days.  I'll give the movie a shot anyway, seems entertaining at least.

I'm on the last part of Kerr's edit of The Lord of the Rings, The Red Book of Westmarch.  It breaks it up into six parts that follow the book more closely, and it's unreal how good it is.  *disappears to watch part VI*

I don't begrudge the right of a vet a to think that the war he fought in should be depicted accurately.

I agree with this point.  He could have and should have made the changes himself.

I guess you missed the part where Aurelies says that is exactly why it has to be him.   He was not part of the corrupt government and didn't have political ambitions.

"Thunderball"

Yes it's slow moving, but it's hard hitting serious spy story tone makes this entry one of the best of the Bond's.

Are they in clothes that turn neon under the blacklights? I've defended this movie for years. It's not the best film in the world, but it tries to do something that no other has: blend the fun comic and even campy side of Batman (40's-60's comics and yes the 60's TV series) with the brooding obsessive Dark Knight. Then it was slashed down to a mess in editing. For what it is-it works quite well and I enjoy it. And I am a devoted Batman fan so I wouldn't want to beat myself up. ;) The bat-nipples and rear shots are two of the worst additions to any movie ever.

Many complain about the pacing but it's only slow moving if you think about it. Watching this film, you get sucked up into Bond's state of mind and notice the little things like the stolen grape in Count Lippe's room.

Although it was once rumored that the rough cut ran 4 hours...
